I gave this guy $ 500 to repair my mom’s hearing aids, with the assurance that if the didn’t work she would get her money back. Well, they didn’t work, but because he was able to produce a line on a graph when he hooked them up to his machine, he claimed that they did. An argument of semantics ensued, about whether «working» means allowing her to hear when she’s wearing them or producing a line on a graph. Apparently, for him the line on the graph is enough. The fact that she can’t hear with them and gets so much feedback that I could hear it from across the room is beside the point. He must have anticipated this because when I picked them up he said if they squeaked it was because she had wax in her ear. Right. When I asked him if he felt ok about taking $ 500 from a 91-​year-​old woman and giving her nothing in return, he said «yes». Even the slightest compassion would have kept me from writing this, but he was completely unapologetic and unwilling to make the smallest attempt to remedy the situation. Everyone knows that the hearing aid business a huge scam, designed to take advantage of old people. My advice: Read this article from the New York Times, educate yourself, and go to Costco.
