No longer do men have to feel out of place in a women’s salon or short-serviced in a barber shop. Now there is a place just for you. A place where you can get a great men’s haircut, relax with your choice of two microbrews on tap, wine, Nossa Familia coffee & Tazo Tea, juice, bottled water or soda. If you are early, you can catch up on the news or game highlights at the bar or dive into one of the many magazines appealing to men (there’s no Glamour magazines at Hair M). If you are getting a hair service you may continue watching your own private satellite TV or catch up with your favorite hair technician. Best of all, you can begin indulging in services that will make you feel like a King. Services designed just for men like men’s haircuts, shaves, massages and more.

All three locations (Downtown Portland, Pearl District and Beaverton) offer a walkin barber service with $ 25 haircuts. You can still expect a quality haircut and great customer service, but with the convenience of dropping in. Barber Lounge hours are Monday thru Friday 10am-7pm and Saturdays 9am-5:30pm.

History

Established in 2003.

Hair M first opened in downtown Portland in 2003 as Portland’s first men’s salon and day spa just for men. In 2005 Hair M opened in Beaverton at Cedar Hills Crossing. After ten years of specializing in men’s haircuts, straight razor shaves and men’s spa treatments, Hair M opened in the Pearl District at Hair MW along with Hair W. MW offers a men’s cutting studio and women’s studio, with shared treatments rooms for couples massages. Have your partner join you in the bar for a drink before your service or enjoy a magazine in the men’s waiting lounge.

All locations offer a walkin barber cut service for men looking for a basic, quality men’s haircut without an appointment.

Have been attending for over 2 years with Level 4 stylist Jess. My wife appreciates the great cut that she provides. I started out with just a cut every 6 weeks and then joined their basic membership program. Now I have upgraded over the years to King and then Platinum package with a cut and scalp/hand massage every 4 weeks. I work near downtown and really appreciate the month-end scalp massage (it’s a little longer with the Platinum package) from Jess. The cuts are a little pricey compared to some suburbs, but nothing compared to what my wife pays every 4 weeks as well so I am fine with the price. Jess enjoys talking to her customers while trimming if you enjoy conversation; another great month-ending perk that I have look forward to now as well. I vary my drinks between the water, wine, and coffee at the bar though it is not a reason or perk that I need for my repeat business. Parking is validated for the nearby SmartPark garage at 1^st and Jefferson.

Excellent salon. I recently moved to Portland from Eastern Washington and was concerned about finding a new stylist and salon (after working seven years with the same individual in Spokane). Hair M and stylist Melanie are simply superb; nice location, great waiting area (with tv’s, coffee, beer, and wine), and other services. The staff treats you very well, professionally and warmly. I feel very fortunate to met Melanie, and Hair M in downtown Portland. And given it’s location it is a good choice for an out of town man who realized he needed a haircut but didn’t have time to get one back home. I know it has happened to me a time or two. A very good, welcoming, modern, and professional establishment.

In some salons a checkin is just that. At HairM it’s like coming back to see old friends. I was greeted graciously by Alyssia who is very funny and courteous. They promptly poured a good tasting beer to entertain me through my few minute wait.
I had my haircut done by Ashlee who was smiling and understanding of my haircut needs. The scalp massage was one of the best I’ve received at HairM, good pressure and very relaxing. She placed my hair part perfectly and styled me up for a black tie affair. Even if I was just going home

«The absolute worst experience in my entire life. I figured that getting a shave meant I would not have to shave when I got home. Well, I had to shave when I got home $XX.XX wasted. The the last few times I have been in there, I have been more and more disappointed. I will not be going back to Hair M. So please do not send me any coupons. However, I do believe that a full refund is in order. » This is the email I wrote to Hair M after my horrible experience. I received an email that day stating that they would look into it, I did ask for a refund. Approximately a week letter I received an email apologizing for the bad experience and to make it up they would give me a free shave and a free upgrade to any massage that I purchase. So I do no know which is worse, the shave I got or the solicitation to spend more money with them. I understand the free shave which I declined because receiving a service after complaining about the first one never works out. The one other time that I actually did complain about a service and went back and got the free one was worse than the first one. Not this company and more money was spent. So I have not heard from Hair M since declining their offer on the 22^nd of December.

I have been going to Hair M for about 4 years now. I go to the same person, Jess, every time. I am very particular when it comes to haircuts so once I like someone I sticl with them!
The location is great and they will validate your parking. They offer wine or beer with your haircut and always top you off at the end if you would like.
The one issue I have, and I didn’t knock a star off for is that when I started going here my haircut was $ 25. It’s now $ 35 base. I get an increase but if you’re a loyal customer I feel like they shouldn’t keep raising your rent!
The service is great though and I highly recommend, Jess.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Hair M for working your magic and thank you to all the Unilocal users who recommended them.
I just arrived to Portland and needed a haircut badly. I went to book online, but there was nothing until tomorrow and I couldn’t wait till then so I took a chance by driving to downtown and seeing if someone would be able to see me. Got in at 2:30pm and Alicia, the receptionist said someone would be able to see me at 3:30pm. Yay! So, she offered me a drink while i waited. I had a mimosa. Our conversation made the time fly by. She’s a very nice gal. 3 mimosas later and Jessi was able to seat me in her chair. I told her exactly what I wanted and she delivered. She also trimmed by beard very neatly and I felt like a human again.
The only drawback was that I couldn’t get my parking ticket validated because according to the other girl, parking validation is not accepted in the underground parking lot below the salon. Validation is only accepted at another parking structure in the next block. Oh well, i’ll remember that next time. Until then, thanks again.

Great staff. Products are about 20% more than the average salon. I’m okay paying the premium for the cut but by the time you purchase the product to use your about $ 50 in the hole which can be a bit spendy for most. I laugh at the guys who go there to get a complete buzz cut. Must be going for the ladies.

Haircut was pretty good but I couldn’t really justify the cost for the quality of the cut (unless you get the Unilocal deal). Although the person i booked through their online booking system is not the person I was given and nothing was said. This was my first visit so I wasn’t particularly committed. However, it was a bit odd given their fancy booking system. She was very personable and gave a nice haircut.

I’m just updating my review to say that Hair M has continued to deliver consistently top-shelf service ever since my first visit. Also, I had Jessi as my stylist today when I showed up hoping someone had time for a walk-in cut, and she did such an excellent job (with a delightfully bright smile on her face) that I’m planning to go back to her exclusively in the future. :) This is currently the only place I can find my Tea Tree shaping cream too (and I still of course enjoy the complimentary beer), so I have no intention of going anywhere else for my hair care any time soon.

Great haircut. Amazing Enviroment and super friendly service. Had a Kings cut which includes a hot towel face wrap and head massage. Puts time on hold for 10mins and let’s you take a breath — wonderful experience. Stylist Lynn was knowledgeable and cut my hair well suggesting a product that I would never of thought to use. Well worth the money — spoil yourself.

Let me preface this by saying that I am *not* one to write a review of a business and also by clarifying that I am *exceedingly* particular about my difficult-to-manage crop of curls. However, my recent experience with Jennifer was so fantastic that I’m compelled to rave about her and Hair M. I have been coming here for almost a year and have seen other stylists in that time. While they gave me a good cut and I had a perfectly pleasant experience in the salon, what matters most to me is the end result. Previous to Jennifer, that end result was always that I would come home and have to try to figure out how I’m going to «make it work». For the first time in my life, that did not happen after Jennifer cut my hair. There was no contorsion of my arms holding bits and pieces of hair here and there, no glueing individual curls down with hair spray, no resignation to just wear a hat for the rest of the week, none of the little kinks that always happened before! Literally all I needed to do was put some product in and style into place, like I had always hoped to one day be able to do! Being that Jennifer was not my usual stylist, I was a little hesitant that it would end up being more of the same, but I must say, she really listened to me and truly delivered! Honestly the best consultation I’ve ever had. I was slightly concerned when I saw how much she was cutting off, thinking it’d be too much, but as it happens, everything she did proved to be necessary in order to achieve the look and feel for my hair that I wanted. I am just so beyond thrilled that everything that I’ve come to know and love from Hair M was delivered so exceptionally with Jennifer as well as the front desk staff who are always so accomodating to me! A round of applause to all y’all and thanks so much! Can’t wait to be back!

For years, I dreaded haircuts. I loved my long, luxurious mane, and every single haircut resulted in an abomination that I took weeks to recover from. I began to think that no person on this earth can cut curly hair well.
This all changed when I met Kimberly at Hair M.
I explained to her my learned fear of haircuts, but with effortless confidence she whisked me into a big comfy chair, filled me up a pint of delicious Portland beer, and began cutting my hair. After another a second pint, I saw the finished product in the mirror, and shed a single tear of relief. IT DIDN’T TOTALLY SUCK! In fact, it was absolutely fantastic. I didn’t know I could look this good, and my fiancé agrees. It even looked fantastic a few hours later, when the beer glow wore off. This was by a mile the best haircut I have ever received, and have already decided to fly the 3,000 miles to Portland (I live in Maryland) for my next haircut. Also to visit my Mia.

I came here for an appointment for a King’s cut yesterday afternoon. I can’t remember who the stylist’s name was since I came here on short notice but what I do remember was the person seemed impersonal. She really didn’t do much to interact nor find out the specific cut I was looking for. I did my best to describe the look but you can only do so much and it depends on what your stylist envisioned. I told her that the look I’m looking for is like Juan Pablo’s from The Bachelor with the spiky top and clean tapered short cut on the sides. She told me «I don’t watch that show and I’m not familiar with him.» I also mentioned other celebs with similar cuts but she didn’t know none of them. What I was a little surprised about is that she didn’t use her smart phone to look up the name and image of the celeb to get the photo of the look. With digital technology these days you can google anyone and find a photo of them. Anyway, communication could have and should have been better and she should have been more proactive in this respect.
I typically have molding wax in my hair that is very sticky. Typically my stylists have watered the product so that it’s not so sticky. She didn’t attempt to wet it or rinse it out to make the cut easier. I felt my hair sticking to her fingers as she cut my hair. It wasn’t the most comfortable feeling and my hair is naturally very wavy and thin which would make cutting it very difficult even in the ideal of cases. At the end I did leave disappointed. It wasn’t close to the look I was looking for and I believe that the cut was doomed from the beginning. Essentially she cut my hair with really no understanding of the specific look I was looking for. In these situations, the chances of a stylist hitting the mark is essentially zero, even if you are a talented stylist. My end message, «No one should begin a cut without a clear understanding of the look. Attempting to do so is a sure failure.»

Came in for a walk in haircut that was done by Peggy. She’s a great stylist with exceptional attitude and personality. It was my first time there so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Instead, I was greeted with a drink of my choice of beer on tap, red/white wine, or water during my time. I received a shampoo and wash that was perfect with not having to worry about cleaning up after.
Peggy was very knowledgable on what exactly what I look for in a professional level haircut. They take down notes at the end, if you’re a first timer, that way they can see what they did and apply it for next time saving stress and effort.
I highly recommend this place if you’re looking for a classy men’s salon. Top notch service from the front desk and stylist.

a Groupon brought me to the nether reaches of downtown PDX to HairM. I did a walk-in appointment and was told it would be about a 20 minute wait, which it was. In the interim I sat at the bar, drinking 2 free mugs of Widmer beer and watching the NFL playoffs. Not a bad deal, eh? If you aren’t a beer fan they have wine and non-alcoholic choices. The stylist, Jess, was really friendly and did a great job and each booth has its own TV and you get to control the remote and after a very good cut I remained at a bar finishing my other mug of beer. My wife accompanied me and they offered her drinks too.
No doubt it’s a little pricy for a haircut but they do a great job, are friendly, and the drinks and ambiance should be taken into account as well. Walk-in appointments are cheaper so if you have some time to kill and are in the mood for a few drinks while waiting that’s the way to go.

OK. I just had to come back. It was as if i was compelled to do it. It’s not because I need to be surrounded by women who would pamper me for an hour. No, trust me on that. But, I’d been here a couple times before and loved their services. It’s spendy but if you can do it it’s worth it. 5 stars for this one.
Today, I was in the mood for a straight razor shave, something I’d never done before but have been told by many that I need to. So, I put this one on the bucket list and now, when I go I can do so with one less regret.
I walked in the front door and was immediately greeted with something like, what would you like for a libation. You know you’re in for a treat when the first thing they want to do is get you all liquored up. Somehow, that would add to the whole experience. It did. During my stay I sipped endlessly on my generous portion of white wine.
I was greeted by Natalia, a very pleasant Russian gal who was ready to make me feel like a king. Well, king for a day, anyway. Or maybe king for an hour. I gave her a run for the money though because I walked in there with a full beard. She had to mow that sucker before she could do anything. Afterwards, there was an alcohol swab and a conditioning. The aromas were awesome. Next came the hot towels and once my face was all wrapped up, I couldn’t see a bloody thing. This is where your trust issues might be thrust to the surface as you lay there helpless and vulnerable. Alas, all fears were allayed when she asked me if I would like for her to massage my hands. Well, I ask you. Who would say no to that? It wasn’t just the hands. It included everything from the elbow down.
Once all that was done she proceeded to lather me up. I’m not sure what it was but it wasn’t what you might think. She did the shave in sections and only applied what she needed when she needed it. Since I couldn’t see anything I’m assuming it was some kind of shaving oil. When finished my beard was smooth as silk. Then the other nice little surprise was a facial massage to bring everything to a very nice close. Again, the aromas were awesome.
So, all you Unilocaler guys out there who might have been at the Elite event at HairM, you need to do this… seriously. When people say a straight razor shave is something you need to do before you die, trust me, you need to do it.
