History

Established in 2011.

After more than 20 years in the real estate business as a broker, owner, and investor, it became clear that there was a serious gap in the market. The typical property owner was poorly prepared, under-​informed, and didn’t have time to effectively manage all of the necessary ongoing repairs, maintenance and improvements.

At the same time, it was became clear that there were many very good service providers who may not be good sales people or have the budgets for marketing and customer service necessary to effectively compete.

Today, GruntWorks simplifies the process of getting the right provider for the job, allows service providers to spend more time on the services they get paid to perform, and saves both parties time and money along the way. We believe that providing a service that gives people more time for the stuff that matters most improves our community as a whole. Just in case it’s not enough, a percentage of each job booked goes to support local schools and charities.

Proud father. Struggling golfer. Enjoys seeing people maximize potential and realize their dreams. Originally from Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Went to high school in SLC, UT. Graduated from Pepperdine University, and moved to Portland, OR in 1993.

20+ years in the real estate industry as an owner, operator, investor, and broker. Founded RealNet in 2000. The company was active in 8 states and made its way to #298 in 2007 and #89 in 2008 on the Inc. 500 List.

Former Membership Officer of the in Young Presidents Organization (YPO), Board Member and advisor for several non-​profits and start-​ups.

We hired Gruntworks to install 4 bike racks on the ceiling of our garage. John showed up on time and was prepared to begin work immediately. He accomplished the job in less time than I imagined it would take and in a professional manner. I will be hiring this company again to do all my odd jobs around the house.

Super company and I thank Jason for his quick response in getting me a next day appointment. I was showing my home for sale and wanted a couple of doors fixed but as it turns out I sold it the very next day… so no need for Gruntworks to come out. I only wish that this company was available for me in Washougal, Wa because I know I’ll have lots of «handyman» jobs.

I heard through a friend (James Swanson) that Gruntworks was the company to use for handyman-​ish projects so we hired them to put a fire-​escape door in our basement and fix a leak in the roof’s skylight. Not only was their quote reasonable, but they showed up on time, stayed on task, did a good job and finished the project on time.
Gruntworks is who I will hire when I decide to put an additional door in my downstairs or need any other kind of repair that my world’s handiest mom cannot fix.

I emailed this company through Unilocal and although they responded right away via Unilocal the person who was assigned to me failed to follow up or communicate with me the last conversation was seven days ago with no response no reply. I will look elsewhere for a handyman

John is the man! We lived in our home for about a year now and my honey-​do was growing by the week. After working full time the last thing I want to do on my Saturday is mess with those stupid folding laundry room doors that have been broken since we moved in. In comes John from Grunt Works. I contacted them by e-​mail and quickly got a call from John who stopped by to do a quick walk through of the place. He made a list of everything that needed to get done. About a week later John showed back up and knocked out about 8 things in two hours. This is another reason I like the business. You pay by the hour so if you have 20 small fix it items it may cost the same as one larger item. I have seen other companies charge per repair. Another nice feature is you can buy all the supplies you need in advance so the technician can make the repairs with items you have chosen and bought at a price you are comfortable paying. John was on time, professional and very efficient in his working style. The only bad thing is my wife is already working on her second honey do list.

I just had the extreme displeasure of dealing with Gruntworks. They came out to do a repair estimate on a home we own and are in the process of selling in the West Hills/​PDX area. Both in email and verbally I communicated that the only issue was some repairs needed in order for the gas to be turned on. Only what was absolutely necessary. Next day I receive a repair estimate of almost $ 1000! I called another company out for a second quote and I was shocked when this company tells me the gas was already on and all the «necessary repairs» required by Gruntworks were not only exorbitantly overpriced, but were not even needed! Their estimator did not even bother to check the gas line. Akin to an electrician coming in to fix the lights and never trying the switch! I dealt directly with a man named John who was cheeky enough to still charge me the $ 99 service/​estimate fee! Do not use this company.

We we getting ready to put our house on the market and had the «punch list» of things that needed to be done to get the house show ready. I got in touch with James and emailed my list to him January 6. He immediately dispatched contractors and by January 12, work was started. All items on my list were completed by the end of the following week. They even worked around my schedule when I had surgery. The contractors were all extremely nice. I would have trusted any of them even alone in my home. They worked very diligently and left everything clean when they were done. I will definitely call again when our house sells and we get a new punch list from the inspection report.
Work done — carpets cleaned, shower caulked, added swag to move a light fixture, pressure washed decks, walkways and driveway, applied moss treatments, repaired gas fireplace, painted exterior door.

It’s nice not to have to choose from the huge number of providers out there, not having a clue who is good and who is not. I called Gruntworks when I had a gutter problem. They sent someone out to analyze the problem. Eventually someone else came to look at it (it was complicated) and they figured out how to do it. The guys came to install the new gutter but did not have everything they needed, someone had to come back the following week to complete the job. In the meantime Gruntworks thought the job was done and began to bill me, but they backed off as soon as I told them it was not. After completion they sent a bill, which was just as estimated even though the job turned out to be a little more difficult than they thought. Overall very satisfied.

We contacted GruntWorks for a kitchen cabinet ‘repair’. James was accommodating in answering my questions, there was occasional delay on his responses so it required a couple of follow ups :-)
Other than that, John, who came to do the repairs on our kitchen was very nice to work with. He’s a funny guy and was honest on his opinions. We would definitely contact them again if ever we need to do repair work.

Another perfect experience with this company. Can’t say enough positive things about how hard this team works to get the job done right the FIRST time! So happy to be able to call them to get bids on my house projects instead of having to call various contractors. After a minor error in my address and normal Christmas Eve busy business, Gruntworks made every attempt to fix my porch, even though I had to leave. They fixed my light and because of the minor address error they didn’t charge me! Can’t get much better service than that! They were also easy to text with to set up everything. Will totally use these guys in the future.

My wife and I were under the weather and managed to clog our toilet. After a half hour of trying to get things working we were referred to Gruntworks, Unlike a normal plumber who would have taken the service call money and ran, Gruntworks took the time to see if they could fix the problem remotely without incurring a charge. They quickly determined I had a bad plunger. After 15 minutes (including travel time to and form store) and $ 7.00 my problem was solved. They actually looked out for my interests rather than taking some easy money. From now on I am calling Gruntworks when any household problem comes up. You don’t see this kind of service anymore ;).

We used Gruntworks with a livingsocial coupon. It was a good value and the work completed was very satisfactory. The original handyman that was scheduled had a family emergency, so they were able to get another to come in his place.
We used the handyman to help hang up some heavy mirrors in the house, fix a guard rail on the staircase, and to take down two satellite dishes that were leftover by the previous owners when we moved in to our home.
The handyman even noted some problems with our gutter system when he was on the roof and took pictures and emailed them to me, so I could see what was going on there.

This is the second time that I’ve used Gruntworks. Again very easy to work with and quick to schedule. Mike from Sq. Ft. Construction built some more shelves for me. I’m really happy with the results. It completely changes how I use the space for the better. I’ll definitely keep using Gruntworks to help me get through my house projects list.

I bought the Living Social deal because I had a handful of projects that needed to be done and I figured that this would force me to get on it. I still procrastinated until the rail upon which our garage door travels when we use our opener became dislodged from the drywall. I called on a Friday and service arrived on Monday @ 0900. In addition to the garage door, we needed a fix to our sagging deck, some maintenance caulking, and removal of a glass door affixed to the tub in the guest room. This was all done well (including a trip to Parr lumber) in 3 hrs. We were so pleased we asked them to bid on a much bigger project we are planning. I would refer anyone to Gruntworks and instead of procrastinating all those household projects, I will call them again.

Great service and very professional. I bought a living social coupon and used it to have three large shrubs removed from my garden. They had very large root balls and took a lot of work to dig out. They did an excellent job and managed to schedule the work within a few days after my call. I would highly recommend them and will be using them again in the future!

I meant to write this a while ago, but here it is!
My husband and I are first time home owners, and now that we’re in the third summer of homeownership we’ve really begun to understand the costs that can be associated with repair & maintenance.
We were put in contact with GW when we looked into having some fence posts repaired. They promptly got in touch with me about reinforcing the strength of our fence posts without replacing the entire fence & provided reliable service at a reasonable cost.
Not only that, but I also found out through this transaction that they are in the business of helping homeowners find the right fit for many home related services such as landscaping and painting (both of which we were in the market for this summer). Because of their service, I was able to compare prices from businesses I found with ones they found for me. It made finding the right price much easier.
They have great customer service characterized by prompt, clear, and friendly communication.
I would definitely refer to them again on our next project!
