Absolutely the best; I’m only giving it a 4 star because it’s in the market house. I wish it was its own place. The market is very hipster and awkward, slightly smelly even.

Even after reading the reviews on Unilocal,I suggested to my husband that we should go here for our first-ever meal in Portland … not the best choice. The staff was nice enough and the selection is good, but the actual food itself is meh. I could have made it at home. I do like the vegan and vegetarian options they have — you certainly don’t miss the meat — and the veggies were quite fresh, but the beans were bland and the«guacamole» was just mashed avocados(which to some is all that guac is, but it can be so much more too) There’s definitely better places to get Mexican food, specifically a burrito in town.

I wanted this burrito to be amazing so badly! It was just okay. I got a regular burrito with chicken and guac. The guac was alright, but nothing to rave about. The chicken didn’t have much flavor and the burrito was just bland overall. It wasn’t wrapped that well and the tortilla broke slightly which created a soppy mess. I hadn’t been to their previous location, but happened to be in the Portland Public Market and was craving a burrito. They’re expensive for what they are(& don’t come with chips) and they’re cash only. I don’t think I’ll be back, but if you’re in the area and can’t fathom going anywhere else Granny Burrito will feed the craving and it will be a quick stop. You can always snag a Big Sky cookie on the way out too!

honestly I wasn’t expecting this to be the«best burrito ever» so I was not disappointed. It was good although the rice could have used some seasoning. they didn’t have guacamole, the lady said that their shipment of avocados was not good enough to serve — which i definitely appreciate. it was a good quick lunch.

I remember when they were on Fore Street and I was there often. This is only my second time visiting in the Market. There are plenty of choices and you need to be sure to read the boards so you can order efficiently. I was so excited for my burrito and joyously ordered my old favorite; chicken on garlic wrap with black beans with no cheese nor sour cream. Within 2 minutes the hefty burrito was placed in my hand with some napkins. I walked outside and the burrito was leaking already… Thankful for the napkins I slid them in place to suck up the juices and was on my way. Once I got to a spot to eat I opened it up and the whole burrito was slimy with juice from the fillings. Maneuvering the tin foil and napkins to save myself from drops on my clothes I excitedly bit in. It was good. Not great, but good. Chucks of chicken cooked perfectly surround by white rice and black beans(is this where all the juice is coming from??) and salsa…(Maybe this is the juice). I realized that I had opened my burrito on the«closed» end while I was sitting with the trash can between my legs and the other end of my burrito was falling apart b/c the end I was finishing on was not closed. Drip, drop, drip in to the bucket went juices. My hands were a mess and I ended up just tossing the last couple of bites b/c I was messy enough. For me, the $ 8.50 wasn’t worth it. Nothing inside was crispy or discernible; however, I didn’t hate it. My overall opinion was Meh and I don’t have a huge desire to go back. On the plus side: the staff is friendly and quick. They have lots of sauces for you(if you need it messier) and there are plenty of tables to eat in or you can sit outside on benches in Monument Square.

Terrible — Portland unfortunately does not have any good Mexican style places to eat and this place serves slop. A chipotle, sad to say, would offer a much more flavorful and well crafted burrito. I’m not sure why Boston can have decent burrito joints all over town and little Portland can’t have a one.

Worst burrito of my entire life. Turned down Karmasouptra when I saw vegetarian burritos directly ‘next door’. Huge mistake! I ordered the special of the day– a tofu and mushroom burrito that I added spinach and jerk salsa on. Sounds incredible, right? So wrong. The tofu/mushroom/caramelized onion seemed to be missing from my burrito but that’s because it’s a silken tofu paste. When the woman at the counter showed me the tub of the stuff I was pretty disappointed. Really misleading specials sign after a nearly $ 9.00 purchase. The rice was overcooked and the beans tasted like they were taken out of a can and thrown on top. Super bland, very overpriced.

Big burrito fan here. My chicken burrito on a chili tortilla with pinto beans(no sour cream) from Granny’s had a lot going for it, but wasn’t a home run. The wrap was tight and didn’t fall apart while I ate. However, I think the tortilla itself was just from Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods. This isn’t much of complaint because they’re good tortillas, but I use the exact same ones at home, so it wasn’t too special. The distribution of ingredients was great. No pockets of only beans etc… The big complaint I had was the flavor. It was good, but there wasn’t enough of it. I *needed* to put hot sauce on it give it flavor. I love hot sauce, but I don’t want to *have* to use it. I’d come here again if I was in the mood for a ‘rito in a bustling atmosphere and was in the area, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.

I went there for a quick lunch, and with a craving for a flavorful and spicy burrito. I was disappointed by Granny’s Burritos because of the flat flavor. I had a «special» that day which was a jerk tempeh burrito with mixed beans on a chilli tortilla. Not good, overpriced and I don’t think I’ll go back there until they revamp their ingredients with fresher, bolder flavors.

Granny’s is a solid burrito spot in the midst of a sort of food court. I had the sweet chili burrito and it was good. It was a tad expensive but a solid and filling burrito. Be warned it is cash only — but there is an ATM about 15 feet away which is helpful.

Bland is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Granny’s burritos, and honestly, when are having Mexican food, this should not be the case. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, the ingredients are fresh, but someone needs to teach the cooks a thing or two about seasoning. I found myself swapping out chicken or beef for tofu simply because I can’t tell the difference.

I got the jerk chicken burrito, which wasn’t spicy or anything really similar to jerk chicken. The taste was overall rather whole wheat/natural tasting… This may be appealing to some, but to me meant it was rather bland. There were a couple bottles of hot sauce at the counter, but I had to take the burrito to go, so maybe this would have improved the it somewhat. The service is fast and the staff is friendly, however.

Burritos are one of my favorite foods. When Granny’s was originally on 420 Fore St. I used to go there all the time. I, like many, was heartbroken(in the same way one would be when a loved one dies) when they closed their doors. I had so many good meals and good memories there. I was excited, but nervous, when they reopened in the Public Market. I remember being so disappointed with their attempt to reopen and reestablish themselves when they tried near Longfellow Square many years ago. Their culture had changed, their food tasted bland, and their new staff seemed so box-restaurant-forced-cheery. I’ve now been to their reopened-reopened-reopened Granny’s at the Public Market three times and so far… so bad. The first time I went was a day after they opened. The staff seemed confused, the locale seemed awkward, and the burrito I ordered was just damp and runny. It leaked everywhere and fell apart upon the first bite. Pretty un-enjoyable over all. The second time I visited was a few months later. The staff seemed way more with it and old-school-Granny’s-esque, the location was still awkward, and the burrito was a freaking mouthgasm. It was tightly rolled, the«guts» were well proportioned and ideally textured, and the sweet chili tempeh was perfectly flavored. This gave me hope. But recently, I went back for a third time and had to throw my burrito away after a few bites. I got the«teriyaki tempeh» and it was nothing but salt — totally inedible. It literally tasted like I was biting into a block of sodium. I NEVER throw food away. I NEVER spit food out. But I couldn’t even swallow this, my throat kept closing in revulsion. I was shocked. I want so desperately to believe Granny’s — the real Granny’s — will be revived. Currently, it seems they’re resurrected but struggling to really find themselves. Will I come here again? Yes. Because I have faith Granny’s is gonna find their culinary way again. But its going to take a very, very long time to get this taste out of my mouth. Literally.

I was really disappointed when I went to Granny’s for lunch on a recent Saturday. I ordered the guacamole burrito, and my husband had the mango chicken. The black beans in mine had almost no flavor. And it was clear that they had used underripe avocados for the guacamole, which had no richness and just tasted a little sour — not like avocados at all. I know my husband also didn’t like his chicken-mango burrito, but I’m not sure why, specifically. The portions were generous, and I’m accustomed to wrapping up part of a burrito to finish later. But with this one, at a certain point I completely lost interest in eating it, even though I was still a bit hungry. I threw the rest away.

I first had Granny’s back in 2005 when they were located on Fore St. They have since moved twice, as far as i know, and now live upstairs in the Portland Public Market House. I fell in love with their interpretation of jerk chicken and have sworn by the jerk chicken burrito ever since. I would recommend the mango chicken as well. When you order you choose your meat/chicken/veggies, then you pick which kind kind of bean, then you pick the type of tortilla of which there are several. They have a great homemade salsa that has just enough kick even for those who like it hot, like me. The price you see on the board is what you pay as tax is built into their price. Overall the best burrito joint in Maine at the least. Don’t bother with Chipotle or Moe’s because the lady who cooks at Granny’s is amazing.
