I have been fortunate to have care from some top ophthalmologists in Portland. And I can still see well.
And I was fortunate to not need glasses or contacts until only a few years ago and they are yet mild. So I was deathly resistant to visit ophthalmologists or even optometrists!
Don’t be me, by the way! Understand your interpupillary distance and frames which work for that! Contacts — same — understand the details!
My first opthamologist was a very brilliant individual who was trained as an MD in the military. He was fast, thorough, technically curious and had a whole personal network of other eye specialists to consult. He was «oh something might be wrong, you have a weird syndrome, let me take a stereo image and consult with the top specialist in our area.» After. «You are not going to lose your sight, but you need to keep checking it, because you could completely lose your sight.» That’s scary. They retired.
Second opthamologist is the top specialist in the area for that problem. They are like «we have this machine from Europe which no one has and we can scan your retina. Our scans establish a reproducible baseline to see if loss of sight is coming. It’s not covered by insurance now but we will try.» They succeeded. «And we can treat by exotic method X if it gets to that.»
Because of a change in insurance I am with Dr Saulson here. He is like, «Well now we have those machines which no one could get before as part of our regular practice».
Now is where I go into my personal philosophy of selecting health care professionals. Skip to the end for the summary.
This doctor was thorough in examination and up to date tools.
Since I have worked in medical research, on my second appointment I queried him. What are the treatments if this gets worse. What is the new research in eye care. Deeper, your opinion of the limits and questions on that research? He is well there is this group working on that and I’ve read their papers and it is interesting, but far from ready today.
I would say that for any serious medical situation acute, chronic, or yet to play out in a serious way, select a physician with grey hairs. And ask them about what medical research they are following. If they give a smart answer, then dig deeper. If they can answer deeper, they are a better health care provider for complex and serious health questions.
If they are a just recent practitioner, it is up to you to measure your trust with any specific health problem. Easy probems, casual practitioners are fine if you are actively managing your health care. An example of a casual provider would be a provider with names starting with Z. Z — WTF, who names a professional practice with a Z??? But if you are actively managing your health care, or for that matter, managing an elderly relative or a child who has a little more complex situation, experienced practitioners are gold. Choose the right provider for the symptom.
There is a cultural behavior to reject individuals with greying hair as irrelevant. Suggest when seeking health care to seek them out first. Query them on research they are following and their judgement of it. This Dr is one who gets it. Some Unilocalers or Unilocal readers would say, doesn’t every doc do that? Unfortunately no.

I see Dr. Jordan Lubahn. He is amazing. Found out what was going on with an issue I have been dealing with for a long time. I would recommend him to anybody. He has good bed side manner and listens to what your saying.

They cancelled on me twice. The first time, they called me less than 48 hours prior to the appointment and provided no reason for the cancellation. I rescheduled for 2 weeks later. When I arrived for my appointment, there was a note on the door saying the office was closed. No phone call ahead of time, no email, no professionalism. I will not be attempting a 3^rd appointment, this office does not seem to be interested in new patients what so ever. Least professional medical experience I’ve ever had…

My mom came here to get her cataract surgery on both eyes. On the right eye, she had a Toric lens implanted to fix her astigmatism also. On the left eye, she had the regular lens. We had no idea about the Toric lens, until Dr. Holland told us about it. We were to happy to have the suggestion of fixing both the cataract and astigmatism!
The doctors and staff were so caring, and they definitely had our best interest at heart. Everything was done on time, as scheduled. Whenever we had a question, all we had to do was give one of the scheduling ladies a call, and they would answer our questions, or help us find an answer. The facilities are clean, well kept, professional, and the front desk staff is so patient with the amount of customers they see each day. The optometry technicians and surgery nurses were all very knowledgeable, and they were critical to the ease of going through with the surgery.
Dr. Holland is an exceptional doctor. He is very friendly, and smart. He knows all the best options available, and allows us to make informed decisions by giving us clear explanations.
We would definitely recommend going here for any eye procedure, whether if it’s for glasses, LASIK, or cataracts. In fact, talking with other family and friends, we have found out that my grandma, aunts, uncles and neighbors are all patients at EyeHealth Northwest, and I have heard all good praises!
Now, a month after my mom’s successful surgeries on both eyes, she is happy with her decision to choose EyeHealth Northwest for her cataract surgery.
