Extras Only

I hesitated to sign up due to the mixed reviews here but I asked around and got a good recommendation from a friend of a friend. I signed up online, which didn’t take too long, though the «workshop» and questions felt endless. I did pay the fee because my source said he made it back in one job. Well, I signed up one week and got hired for «Grimm» the next. The job was a combination of fascinating and tedious. I loved the camaraderie with the other extras and met some great people. I worked two, 13-​hour days, got fed, had fun, and made back the fee and more. I think that if you have clear expectations about what being an extra means, then you’ll have a good experience. It’s not the way to become a star. The job requires you to follow specific directions, stay in the background, and be of service to the greater story. There’s no room for prima donnas so if you have a problem with authority, or in being the lowest of the low in the pecking order, don’t bother to be an extra. Otherwise, sign up meet cool people, make a few bucks, all with court side seats to the inner workings of the industry

You don’t do this for the money. I call this «workplace tourism»: Someone gives me a tiny bit of money (about $ 63.00 for a day after deductions assuming there’s no overtime) to go and watch people do an interesting job (make a TV show).
I never paid this company a dime, though I know they try to sell people on a service that puts their picture and info at the front of the line for productions to find. I never paid them a dime yet I got a little work on Grimm. And, let me tell you, the pay is grimm too! But I did it because it’s just fun to be on the location watching a show get made. Yes, as an extra, you are the lowest of the low, but you just sit there, read a book, get up when you’re called, do what you’re told when the camera is rolling, and then go back to your book. If you are thinking of using this service to kick start any acting career for you or your kid, this isn’t the place. An extra is just «background» to fill in empty space — nothing else. And they pay so little because they are charging the client (in my case Grimm) even more money for my time. It’s an employment agency pure and simple. Nothing glamorous.
So, if you want a lark and you want to spend the day watching a TV show being made, this is fun. If you actually need money, this isn’t the answer. If you want to be an actor, this isn’t the answer.

I really like this company though I have not found anything to compare it with. One time I had an issue with my account and it was a simple phone call and everything was fixed.
I find the staff very professional and well organized because of how fast they can answer my question if needed. I have gotten many job opportunities to have the chance to work with different companies requiring people. The only suggestion
I have for the site is it would be nice to be able to post your primary jobs work schedule. But other then that I really like them.

Waste of time. Paid for their highest level of service and was cast in Grim as an extra (just paying me enough to barely break even in the yearly membership) then went on to accept and make myself available for 4+ jobs, each time rescheduling friends, family and other work and then each time the day before casting was passed up without explanation. It seems that if you are a normal-​decent looking 40 something male this may not be a good place to hope to be cast as an extra because I wasted an enormous amount of time that could have been well spent all the while hoping for something that turns out to look like quite a scam. My advice, find a decent agent.

I LOVE extras only!!! Not only do I get to do what I love by acting, everyone at Extras Only is so super nice. Sally is the consummate professional and so kind, and Terry (sorry if that’s spelled wrong) always has called me back and is so nice. Where are they now? The office was closed. No idea what the hours are. It still says Danny Stoltz casting on the door but the business has been replaced by Nemesis JuJitsu. I had a great time working two different days in downtown Portland last year but what’s going on now with the website and business? I tried calling and got the words USER BUSY on my cell. Tried calling, left a message and still waiting for a call back to open my closed account. Doubt an e-​mail will solve everything.

Very disappointed, called once, felt encouraged so paid the registration fee and never got called again I even updated my profile and got no calls. What a scam’

Having been with extras only for over three years I have lot’s to tell. My first year I was going to school so most of the time I had to turn down work. during that year I was up for consideration for three to four jobs. Being up for consideration is not the same as getting the job. That’s the catch. The pay is very low and the abuse is very high on some of the sets. Especially if Jimmy Mack is working. The unprofessional behavior displayed by him on the set was unbelievable. Yelling at extras screaming in my face accusing me of talking during filming. I find the company to be very badly organized and the employees to be rude and arrogant. I was told that my pictures were never good enough so I went in to the office to have them taken. There you’ll find a rude women sitting talking to her friends on the phone. She kept telling me to wait. After an hour of waiting she finally took my picture and told me,” that’s it”. No «thank you «nothing.
I left there feeling as if I had wasted my time.
I’ve worked in Hollywood for over 14 years in the movie and television industry and I had never been treated so badly.
Don’t waste your time.

This is not the place to go if you want to deal with an honest company. I signed up with the 20 day trial and after about half of that I decided that their company was so disorganized and unprofessional, that I deactivated my account, about 10 days prior to my 20 days being up.
Well, then the next day after deactivating I get a note from them that they tried to run my card but it didn’t go through. Why would they run my card if I deactivated before the date? I have tried to call their office before and email them, with no response. The way they do their business makes you wonder if there really is a place called Extras Only.
I would run the other way if I were you. I don’t do business the way they do and I think they are a scam. Don’t go there!!!

It’s obvious they have their favorites. I worked for Grimm on one episode. It was my first time to work on a set and then Leverage twice. They would ask me for availability for work for Grimm and I would always respond «yes» no matter what I was doing because I’d heard they won’t get back with you if you reply «no» and gave your reason. Well, I had surgery coming up and they asked availability. I replied that I couldn’t because of surgery listing name of hospital and doctor for verification. I’ve not heard from them since. They also tell you that if you only want to be on Grimm that you can sign up w/​o paying a fee. I’ve attempted to do this and have yet to hear from them. I sent them an email to let them know I’m available again and dead silence on their part. Makes me wonder if being an extra is really worth the trouble and effort, especially for the minimum wage pay. Also, when I’d respond that I was available, I’d always get a text that they’d hired someone else for the job. So, canceling plans for them was always a waste of time. Always happy to help but when I feel as though I’m being taken advantage of, and I don’t care what company or organization it’s for, then I find other things to do where I can know my time and effort is appreciated and counted!

With integrity they book you constantly, otherwise you fail yourself.
there’s a reason they cast everything between Seattle and Los Angelos.

Had my 6^th grader on Extras Only for 6 months. Let’s see. Three outfits for jobs only, and nice shoes — $ 110. 6 months of no work = $ 150. So our entire Extras only experience lost us $ 260 for nothing but some expensive new school clothes. The worst part? A hugely disappointed kid who was so excited to sign up and asked me to check my phone nearly every day. Going to try other routes. Waste of money.

The best place in portland to get extra work. (Thats on a TV or Movie set!) As a SAG member, I have limited opportunities, but they always seem to book me a few times a year and it’s very fun when I do get to work. Its an experience everyone should try, at least once.
