Eve’s at the Garden

Great food but really crappy service. Saddened me because while staying at the hotel I had one of the best breakfasts I think I have had, then went there the next morning anxious to repeat my experience and it was like my wife and I were invisible. We watched several people get seated, order their food and one table wven get their food before we got up and left because we had not been acknowledged. We told the maitre de we were leaving and why as we left and did not even get an apology, much less a «let me make this right». This is service at a 400.00 a night and up hotel???
I recommend the food though, as the chef and staff do a great job, just beware of a sleep walking wait staff.

I ate here for restaurant week, my first time since I usually wouldn’t be able to afford it. My meal was phenomenal. The portions were generous, so much so that I actually had leftovers. I asked the chef to put the appetizer (lamb in filo) on the regular menu so I could relive it in the future. The entrée (chicken with lentils and eggplant) was extremely unique and flavorful. As for dessert… well it was dessert, so I liked it.
The atmosphere was cozy and intimate. Our server, Robert, was attentive but not intrusive. It was a fantastic experience, and now that I know what I’m paying for, I know it’s worth it. I will be returning once I work some overtime!

First off I would like to preface this by saying that the hotel itself is beautiful and if I didn’t live down the street I would definitely stay here if I were traveling to Portland… but would enjoy cocktail hour elsewhere.
Back to the drinks. We met the squeeze’s family here for pre-​dinner cocktails to celebrate an occasion. *There was a total of six of us, not 10, or 20* The service was incredibly slow which made no sense because the courtyard was by no means full. Our waitress was not friendly or interactive, she seemed like she didn’t want to be there at all. And my cocktail was just like any other cocktail except it was $ 14. Ouch.
It felt like we were waiting 20 minutes each time for our drinks, and when it came to the guys ordering beers she claimed they had nothing on draft. What does that even mean? How are you situated in the heart of downtown, in a city that excels in micro-​brews, only to not have anything on draft? They also didn’t have any unique bottle options, just your expected Shipyard Summer Ale stock.
Stick to any of the other great bars in Portland for drinks.

Restaurant Week Review ($ 45 3-​course menu):
Atmosphere: located in the Portland Harbor Hotel. Reallyyyyyy small, and quaint. Besides my party of 6, there were two other parties of 2. Our reservation was at 7pm. Doesn’t really have a restauranty vibe, kind of reminds me of a Nordstrom Café.
Menu looked amazing, and that’s why we decided to check the place out… in hindsight, probably would have passed up on it.
Service was great. Very attentive waiter.
Appetizer: Lamb Lollipops; came out on a cold plate, and was barely warm… it was tasty, so I decided not to send it back, also thinking maybe it had just cooled down bc of the lack of a warm plate or perhaps the cold sauces it was laid over. No doubt it would have been a stellar plate had it been a hot dish. Oh, wasn’t really a fan of the sweet sauces it was accompanied with, though (one was maybe like a blackberry sauce or something, the other was green in color).
Had a taste of the breaded veal, and thought it was decent.
Entrée: Flat Steak was subpar, however the truffled mashed potatoes were delicious.
Dessert: tiramisu; also subpar, a little soggy. Friends had the molten cake and didn’t seem too pleased with it either. They said they wished it was more molten and wanted it to be paired with ice cream.
In conclusion, was not worth the $ 50 for restaurant week. Did not get the restaurant week vibe I had hoped for. There are far better options out there, IMO.

We’ve had really great dinners there before. But last night at restaurant week let us down. The appetizers were delicious (lolli pop lamb chops and lobster ceviche). But the mains were not great. Mine, the bouillabaisse, was flavorless and the mussels in it were cold. My husband’s, flank steak, was ok. But that’s all. The dessert, panna cotta, was excellent.

We probably would never have gone here for dinner if it weren’t for the blizzard, but it was the only thing open. It was a pleasant surprise! It’s a hotel restaurant so the ambiance is what you would expect and with a fine dining experience to it but not over the top. The food just really exceeded expectations. It’s kind of pricey but worth it. I had the seafood lo mein and my boyfriend started with the clam chowder and then the lamb loin for his main. They were both SO good and were very big portion sizes. Enough that we each took half our meal home. It was just a good quality meal. I also really enjoyed the perfect bread and butter and we both tried a specialty hot chocolate and decided they were the best hot chocolates ever.

Stayed at the Portland Harbor Hotel with my man and ordered room service because we are adults. Healthy portions and lovely service. Banana bread French toast (hi) and corned beef hash (with real corn beef, hi) were the standouts. Staff was lovely and honestly gave me the best English muffin I’ve ever had. Best room service of my short life.

As one of our favorite unsung wine spots, we decided to eat dinner here tonight.
The wait staff, the food, the cocktails. All great. The soups (both land and sea) were delicious. Had an oyster stew that was nearly perfect.
My partner is a vegetarian. She adored the zucchini parmesan entrée. Her words: «Transcended vegetables. Savory. Super moist.» I had a seafood paella that was spicy and perfectly prepared. The presentation felt hearty and creative at the same time.
Added it to our «unsung food spots» list.

Although I’m a fan of the Portland Harbor Hotel, I’m usually wary of hotel restaurants; but Eve’s was perfect for a tasty, local, convenient brunch.
The dining room is small but comfortable and cozy (and there’s an adorable garden for nicer weather); we sat right next to the roaring fireplace, which as warned did get a bit hot, but was lovely nonetheless. I had the lobster benedict, and it was excellent all around: tons of sweet fresh lobster, flavorful caper hollandaise, perfectly poached eggs, nicely grilled English muffins, great addition of spinach and tomato, and some tasty hash browns on the side. The boy’s pork belly waffle topped with bacon and egg was inventive and nicely executed, although was a bit soggy in places due to the pork belly (but crispy in others). All in all, a nice brunch.

This review is not about the food, but rather the service. I called several weeks earlier for a reservation at the Thanksgiving buffet. When I arrived we were told there was no reservation!
I pulled out my calendar and gave them the date and name of the person who took the phone reservation. Turns out she was standing right there and continued to deny ever taking the call. Why would anyone do that? After a moment we were offered a empty banquet hall or two seats at the bar.
We sat at the bar. The food was good, but I was disappointed to see two tables empty the whole time we were there, but never a offer to sit at a real table. To top it off a 20% gratuity was automatically added to the bill.
A simple apology or a little extra effort would have gone a long way to make things better.

Eve’s is an enigma. We have eaten here twice. A year ago, half the food was spectacular and half was only so-​so. But our dinner just before Christmas this year was excellent in all respects — 3 different appetizers, four entrees and two desserts were each outstanding. The menu choices were unusually interesting, though as usual there were no specials. While we did not sample them, there were three or four vegetarian entrees, which is unusually supportive of those seeking it.
But for first-​class food, the wine list is astonishingly small (maybe 154 red, 15 white and four sparkling). And the reds were almost entirely pinot noir, malbec and cabernet, and the whites — pinot grigio, chardonney and sauvignon blanc. Several were priced at about double retail cost, but at least one was triple. It’s the limited wine list which keeps us from dining here more often, and it’s unusually skimpy for a restaurant serving food of this quality.
Also puzzling was how slow the kitchen was. On an evening with only twelve diners, our food took a long time to arrive. Our server was excellent; it was not his fault.
There are so many excellent restaurants in Portland. Eve’s could compete with the best if the hotel took its restaurant seriously.

We stopped here as part of a Wine Wise event. We were sampling sweet white wines and we were served a pairing of pork belly which was amazing. The presentation and taste were perfect.

Mediocre lunch at best. The restaurant was not tidy and there were crumbs on the chair, which was spotted as well and somewhat worn. The salads were skimpy, the bread was flavorless, and the after dinner coffee was warm. Only two other diners besides my friend and me and the service was slow. The garden view was lovely but I don’t think I will be back for a meal. Too many great Portland restaurants.

Great food here. One of the best burgers I’ve had. Duck and pork sliders are great and the steak was superb. There martinis are unreal and the best happy hour in portland. This place goes overlooked by locals because its in a hotel.

Eve’s atmosphere is absolutely perfect and the food was mouth watering. I went her on Valentine’s Day and had swordfish that melted in my mouth. The ice sculptures outside were beautiful and the service was attentive.
The hotel that it resides in just recieved a 4 diamond rating from AAA and the staff was super excited!
I will be back on my next trip to Portland!

Eve’s at the Garden was a pleasant surprise. I think it was 95% due to the outdoor seating area that I fell in love with the space. You go upstairs and there’s a little garden tucked away in a courtyard. The drinks were tasty albeit a bit weak, the blueberry martini was very nice. We didn’t order meals, but the bruschetta and the cheese plate were very good and fresh.
I would bring out of town visitors to Eve’s for a nice and refreshing drink in the summer.

Now that I returned I see that being understaffed are a way of life here. Menu was unchanged. No specials. My first rating was based on a sandwich.
It is very unlikely I will return. I expect this restaurant will either make changes or close.
With so many great places to eat in Portland, I recommend you steer clear if this one.

Terrible! They claim to be «award-​winning» and the highest-​rated in Portland, but what a disappointment. First, we were told we couldn’t get a reservation until 8:30, but when we got there it was empty. That seemed odd. Then the hostess said we wouldn’t want to sit outside in the garden because there were no lights. Later we discovered all the tables were lit with candles and looked very romantic.
As soon as we were seated we were given a list of items on the menu that they were out of, including crab, which happened to be part of many of their dishes. The service was incredibly slow, but the staff were friendly, I’ll give them that.
Because we were staying in the hotel, we made the mistake of going back for breakfast and again we were told all of the menu items they were out of and the food at both meals was just OK.
Definitely don’t recommend this one.
