History

Established in 2009.

Elemental Energy is a locally owned and operated solar PV design and installation firm located in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 2009 by graduates of the first and only accredited Bachelor’s of Science degree program in Renewable Energy Engineering, our mission is to critically address the way that society uses and thinks about energy.

Elemental Energy is a global leader in residential, commercial, and mobile systems installation in the greater Portland area, as well as in Tanzania, Nicaragua, Belize, Haiti, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. John G.

Business Owner

John’s passion for renewable energy was sparked in 2008, when oil prices peaked and he knew that something had to be done to ensure energy sustainability for future generations. He moved from Colorado to Oregon, where he ultimately earned his Bachelor’s degree in Renewable Energy Engineering from the Oregon Institute of Technology. Having worked for several large industry companies during school and after graduation, John noticed that he could make the biggest impact on the «front lines» of sustainable energy. This realization led him to found Elemental Energy, with the goal of helping clients, both locally and internationally, to gain energy independence.

John is Oregon Department of Energy Tax Credit Certified, A NABCEP Certified PV Installer, IGSHPA (International Ground Source Heat Pump Association) certified designer and installer. He previously worked in Research and Development at SolarWorld USA helping to advance next generation photovoltaic cell concepts.

I had elemental energy install a solar system in December 2015. This is actually a second solar system for me. The first one was installed by solar city 5 years ago. Solar city did do a site visit but would not even give me a proposal for putting on a second system.
Elemental energy responded promptly to my inquiry and were easy to work with.
I was satisfied with their work and the ability to integrate the second system into my existing system. They also placed the wiring for a back up Tesla battery, so that can be installed when available.
I have no reservations in recommending them.

My solar panel project couldn’t have gone better. From beginning to end everyone i dealt with at Elemental Energy exceeded my expectations. Brandon and Jared were extremely professional and knowledgeable. They explained things in language I could understand. i always felt like my project was a priority for them. My email questions were always answered promptly. Cassandra in the office also did a great job of communicating on the billing end. I can, t imagine I could have had a better experience with any other company. I also enjoy supporting local businesses.

The crew at Elemental are awesome! John and Brandon helped me through all the various steps necessary to get solar on my roof, including all the documents necessary to get the tax incentives. They were the only company I talked to who recommended micro-​inverters and installed the system for the same price as the other guys using a central inverter. The system looks and works great. They took the time to answer all my many, many questions in a timely and personable manner. They are passionate about what they do and it shows. You can get the same system from anyone, so these 5 stars are for the people that made it happen. If you’re thinking about solar than give these guys a call, you won’t be sorry.

Interviewed 6 solar installers for the new construction. All fairly competent and similar prices. Elemental stood above since the first round. Solid knowledge, wide product selection, no pushy about upgrades and very cost conscious. Came out a tiny bit above lowest bid but amount of detail in planning was above and beyond all. Explained in detail how the whole process will work including permits and rebates etc (and it actually went exactly as planned). Coordinated with the roofer on their own and showed up on time every time. Even sent electrician on the weekend when we needed to reroute the wiring before texture application. Installation was fast and smooth, even painted all exposed conduits etc to make it look better on the roof. Everybody involved from Elemental were professional, courteous, on-​time. Cleaned up after even tiny bits of wire insulation. One of the best subcontractors in a fairly involved project. Highly recommended! Ask for John as project coordinator!

Great service and people working here! They installed an ~8kW system on our house recently and the process was pretty terrific. Great team of people… small company with knowledge, education and training in the solar industry. Way better than the larger companies offering the «same» products. Products are the same but the people make the difference!

December of last year I contacted four different solar installers through the Oregon Energy Trust website. Elemental Energy was the only one to come out to my property for a rooftop solar evaluation. Another installer wanted $ 150 just to come out and look at my property. Their estimate was very clear in breaking down the system production, costs, and tax credits. In addition they completed the installation that month so I qualified for the state and federal tax credits that year!
There were some issues with new electrical code that had just gone into effect in my municipality along with a overzealous inspector that wanted everything done in a particular way that wasn’t spelled out in the code. They patiently worked though the issues with the city to get the job completed.
So far the system production has exceeded their estimates by a good margin, and on track to break even in under 3 years.

Our lives crossed the path of John of Elemental Energy when he was a guest speaker at our son’s senior-​level engineering course at PSU. With our son’s recommendation, we contacted Elemental Energy for an assessment for solar panels on our Tigard home.
We were pleased to learn of the incentives offered to adding solar to homes in Oregon. John succinctly explained the costs, benefits, and incentives available with adding solar power; all without pressure. He made the whole process simple and straight-​forward. Honestly, we cannot find a single reason to not install solar panels with Elemental Energy.
We were very pleased with the service and installation of our solar panels. In less than a day, the competent, friendly, and professional team installed the panels just as promised.
Now is a great time to take advantage of the incentives available in Oregon. I urge you to contact Elemental Energy. Today!

Just got the switch flipped on my brand spanking new system and the panels are already producing more than our household is using! John and Brandon did great work from start to finish on everything from quoting out specs and helping me understand which incentive programs would be most beneficial, to making sure that the post-​build paper work was fully taken care of with the city and PGE.
I’m not sure why the lady below found it necessary to give 1 star for a small business to charge a fee on credit payments… I personally took out a very low interest rate loan from my bank that had no problem funding my system. By the time I get the tax credits back at the end of the year I’ll be able to fully pay off my loan (problem solved).

Found these guys online and had Mike come out to do a quote for solar on our house. Very personable guy and good proposals put together explaining costs, energy savings, etc. We also liked their engineering and social justice philosophy.
As part of vetting out solar vendors, we of course got several other quotes, all of whom had no problem taking credit cards for payment same-​as-​cash. After all, these jobs require the homeowner to come up with $ 10−20K upfront, something that I know very few regular people just have sitting around in their checking account. Additionally, the other businesses all said (as most contractors do) to let them know if the price comes in competitively with others so they can try to meet/​beat if possible.
So we really liked Elemental, and I emailed to verify that they’d accept credit cards and he said they would charge us 2.75% more (about $ 400 difference) to cover their processing fee rather than absorb the cost. I let him know that the other vendors weren’t charging an additional fee to accept a credit card and that if he was going to do that we weren’t going to work with them. He didn’t even provide the courtesy of a response, so because of that we’re going with someone else and he just lost $ 14,000.

These guys did a fantastic job conducting a solar feasibility study for my parents’ beach house. They helped us truly understand the risks and long term reward associated with a solar investment. We aren’t quite ready to move forward, but when we do we’re going to call EE again.

It wasn’t until I met with Brandon and John from Elemental Energy that I realized that I had found the company I was looking for. First, these guys were the only ones who actually had degrees in Renewable Energy, meaning they knew what they were talking about. Second, they donated their time using their skills installing solar in Africa, using their passion for what they do and to help others in need. And third, in my opinion most importantly, they were local. The same people meeting with you to discuss solar are the same doing the installations, same managing the project, the same communicating with you. I don’t want to undervalue their style of locality to Portland, specifically I appreciated their accessibility and flexibility for my needs.
The install process happend quickly and these guys are so tough, that it actually started to snow while they were installing the panels on my roof! The electrical work was superb from their journeyman contractor who also took the care to consider our garden. Finally, it was the innumerable little things and intangibles, which made the decision of choosing Elemental the right one. They provided added value so far beyond our expectations. These are the guys which put you at ease while they are in your home or on your roof. I am grateful that we made the right decision going with Elemental!
