E & M Appliance Repair

Pur washer is acting up and I need advice about replace versus repair, so I stopped in for a chat.
The staff accommodated me with common sense and straight talk.
The shop is small but packed with a surprisingly diverse inventory.
I the market for an appliance? Stop in and give them a chance.

My dryer had been running half hot and needed like three runs to dry a load… self diagnosed it as a bad thermostat… went in looking to buy some parts for a do it myself project… explained my problem. was told I didn’t actually need the parts. just needed to work on air flow. She gave me 3 or 4 areas to check… I did that… dryer is running like dream. Bam. Solid. Perfect. I will be back. Thank you.

Really nice people providing great service. Helped me fix my dishwasher, it was so easy.

Read a bunch of Unilocal reviews, and called the first 5 or so top-​rated repair companies when my maytag range shit the bed. Pricing structures are somewhat similar an I hesitated to call these guys since they weren’t on the top 5 list. But I asked my St Johns FB crew — and local people seemed to like them.
Meanwhile — they were able to come the next day (many expected me to wait 3 or 4 days!), I was able to actually speak to someone when I called (others you simpy leave a message and wait or talk to someone who has no knowledge at all). And they were right down the street!,
Don (a private contractor) came over (it’s a 3 hour time frame which was the only negative) and fixed it in a jiffy with a smile and pleasant conversation! I know for a fact that they charged me less for the part than the other co. planned to (they called me back with a quote after the job had already been done).
If I gave out 5 stars, then I would do so… so let’s call it 4.5 and a strong recommendation for this local business!

Nope, left me hanging.
Don’t call me on Thursday when you said you’d call me back the Friday before.
There are other parts places in the city and used appliances don’t cost as much as a service call.

I am a loyal customer. These guys are just really good at their job.

This review just might kill me… I HATE to negatively rank on the local talent but I had a horrible time with this company. We had just moved into a house with a gas dryer and while I tried my hardest to get it set up myself I realized that it was going to be a episode of «tool time» real quick… with me playing the role of Tim the tool man sans eye brows (and/​or a house once the gas went up). I called E & M was reassured that they could help. Then I waited… and waited… no one called me back to schedule. So I called again… the guy apologized and even came out on a Saturday to look at it. He did something for a bit (what I had done previously) then stated I would need a «gas specialist» to fix the dryer. He stated he had a friend who he would contact and get back to us. I paid him. even though I still had no dryer… and again waited… and waited… for him to call back… which he never did. So at least a full 7 days later I called E & M left another message and again waited…(you see a pattern?).
He never called me back. I am not slamming the place for lack of knowledge. but what frustrated me was this whole process took almost 3 weeks and if he had just said «sorry I don’t know how/​or can’t do this» right off the bat I would have had a dryer much quicker.
So I eventually called Community Appliances, they came out that day and fixed it within 15 minutes. I don’t know if this was a single bad experience but I won’t be using them in the future.

Oops! My washer was making noise– a LOT of noise– and leaking quite a bit. Instead of actually dealing with the problem, I put it off. Well, I finally got around to calling E&M, who are super-​conveniently located to my house in St. Johns, for a looksee.
Sadly, the washer was toast (or, at least, the price of replacement parts for the repair cost more than the washer would be worth, or the cost of a refurbished washer of better quality). Don the repair man took it apart, showed me what was wrong, made calls and told me the exact price of replacements, and gave me the straight story. He did try to sell me on some refurb Maytags at their shop (which is a Maytag vendor), but you know, that’s what they have to do, he was not at all pushy about it.
Best of all — I forgot my wallet at work the night before– and I didn’t have any checks at home. I called in to the shop to ask if I should cancel the appointment. They kindly agreed to come out anyway and let me call in to pay later. I mean, they knew where I live, but still. That’s what I call service!

This is the first place I go to when looking for appliance parts. They’re near my neighborhood, which is handy, and when I call them to see if they have a part they often tell me it will take a while, which seems to mean that they’ll have it by the end of the day, which, to me, is a perfectly acceptable time frame.
The prices for parts can be a bit much, but such is the case with appliance parts everywhere. It’s not E&M’s fault. The staff are very friendly and will often give tips as to how to complete your repair. I could only wish that they stayed open beyond 5 PM at least once a week so that I didn’t have to leave work to pick up a part.
I have not used their repair service as I do my own repairs.
