John Lamb at Drum Lessons Portland specializes in teaching music making that matters. Playing the drums is about more than playing the right notes in the right order — it is about having fun and creating a connection between musicians and between the musicians and the audience.

Lessons also focus on learning things that each student will use outside of lessons. Timekeeping, knowledge of specific styles, reading, fills, music theory, how to play behind the beat or ahead of the beat, etc.

Technique is also a focus. You have to move to play the drums. Improving technique means studying and refining those movements to make them more effective.

Rock Band classes for kids and adults are also available — these classes are an opportunity for musicians to get together in a band setting, learn songs and play real shows!

Business Owner

John Lamb is a musician, music educator, photographer and author based in Portland, OR. John has a B.S. in Music, Biology and Psychology and a Masters in Education geared towards teaching drums. He has been playing professionally around the U.S. and Asia since he was 15 years old. John began writing music education books for First Act, a company that imports instruments for beginner musicians, and has recently published A Matter Of Time: The science of rhythm and the groove — a book that explores what rhythm is and how to use it better. His latest book, tentatively titled «It’s Not Too Late» is a method book for adults who always wanted to learn to play the drums but never did. It is due out in March 2014.
