Double J Motorwerks

While no one enjoys having to drop serious cash for auto repairs, I found the staff at DJM to be kind, responsive, extremely helpful and honest. They gave my baby a full work up which resulted in a list of repairs, allowed me to choose which ones to do for now, stayed within the price range of the quote and had the car ready to go when they said they would. Their prices are better than some other VW shops in town and their service and staff are excellent. If your car is your baby, then Double J Motorwerks is where you need to take it!

Joey Marshtal and Carrie Marshtal are great people and very competent owners of this euro auto shop. Carrie goes out of her way to provide customer service, by offering rides to nearby stops like Portland Airport rental location. And Joey does the same shuttle service. If you talk to some one for a few minutes, you pick up on a person’s character, and I get a good vibe from them both. I trust their work and their prices are fair.

If you care for your VW/​Audi — don’t waste time going to any other mechanics. My first visit was simple and fast. I was asked to just come in — after sending an email asking for their availability. They fixed a problem that’s been going on for 8 months in my car. Took them 25 minutes. I’d given up on a lot of mechanics in the area especially for the lack of VW/​Audi expertise. It seems mechanics just don’t go the ‘extra mile’ they used to.
The first thing that instilled confidence was this: when I drove into the lot, I noticed all Double J mechanics own beautifully maintained cars. Some are daily drivers; some are the most tuned VWs I’ve ever seen. If they drive and race it; you can be sure they know absolutely everything about it. The pleasure of meeting people who actually care about my car is really comforting.
This showed when speaking to them — finally a place who understands true VW/​Audi care. This atmosphere is where I want to be when at a garage. Mutual understanding and respect — not stoic customer /​business exchanges. David and Joey are always very pleasant and enthusiastic when I come by. Big shout out to Chase & Matt — two of the hardest working mechanics in Portland. I like seeing them; unlike past mechanics/​garage visits I dreaded it !
Double J Motorwerks is the best. As long as I own an Audi or VW — I will be bringing it here.

These guys are great. A friend who also drives a VW referred me to them when I requested a mechanic that is quick, affordable, and doesn’t mess around. I brought my rickety ass ’08 Jetta to them with a whole host of problems, and they fixed it up in 3 days. And apologized for my wait! My last two mechanics kept my car for a month each like it was no big deal. DJ also didn’t fix anything extra on my car and charge me for it. They stuck to the requested list, and now my car runs great.

I’ve driven my MKIV R32 from Seattle down to Double J for the UM Haldex Flash/​ecu tune within the past year and I cannot say enough good things about them. Very friendly, knowledgable, and honest staff. Just this past weekend, I stopped by to have a Euro FIS cluster swapped in and coded, everything went very smoothly, works perfectly and I couldn’t be more stoked about it (thanks again Joey!!)
I am usually pretty protective/​weary over who works on/​services my car in general, but when it comes to Joey and the rest of the crew over at Double J, I’ve got no concerns at all because I know they’re going to provide the best service out there and will do it right the first time. I plan on taking my R down there for all future servicing/​maintenance/​tuning; nothing in Seattle comes close to their quality of work. Would highly recommend!

I cant say enough good things about this place. Just had some more service done and couldn’t be happier. Avoid the dealership and bring your car to DJM. Fair prices and knowledgeable staff.

If you have a VW — especially a diesel/​TDi — then these guys are the best. Their VW expertise is amazing. They do great work, provide exceptional service, and are much more reasonably priced than the big name VW dealers in town. I live on the west side of town, and drive about 20 miles (past two VW dealers) just to take my Passat to Double J.

We have two older Jetta TDIs, and Double J has taken great care of them. Joey is super friendly, as is Carrie the office manager. I appreciate how itemized they are on their work, so i know what was done and clearly what the charges were. Quality work, timely, and they really know VWs. Highly recommended!

These guys do great work. Super helpful if you have anything enthusiast, built for performance. They do great stock maintenance as well. They are a huge support in the vw Community and I look forward to a year we can make it back up to your Pacific Waterlands show.

Attempted to do business with them on a tuning product. Found out that because they are the only shop within 700 miles in the US that offers this product, they take the unusual step of charging an additional fee on top of the product, which is simply a software file. Not only that, they charge an hour of skilled labor, $ 96, to install the file. Other tuning shops do not do this, as they are already getting a cut of the purchase price (in this case $ 699) for being an authorized dealer. Installing a software file on a modern car requires basic computer skills and a laptop; the skills of an authorized technician are not needed. This is an exorbitant fee and an ethically questionable business practice. With this in mind, I choose not to proceed with that business transaction.
Note: This information was gained solely through MY first-​hand customer experience. It is relevant as it was my personal experience as a customer (a transaction does not have to occur for someone to be a customer) and it is valuable to other potential customers as they may not know that this is NOT a typical business practice.

This shop was recommended to me through a good friend. I’ve got a 2000 New Beetle with a gas engine. The owners were kind, friendly, and above all helpful. I received quick, reasonably priced work and my car is running well again. It’s amazing the difference having a specialist and expert work on your car can make! I highly recommend this place!

I live on a tight budget, and it took me several months to budget in the $ 300-​$ 400 I thought I needed to fix my car. I brought my lunch, thinking I’d be there several hours. I’m home now, with that lunch, and most of the money I had budgeted. These people rock! I wish I knew about them much sooner! They’re the best!

800.00 and the car is doing exactly what it was when I brought it to you again! NOT FIXED! You cost us 800.00 and did not save us anything when the issue still exist. So frustrated right now. You did not address the power steering issue and the work you say you did was obviously not done right because the car is having the same issue. Complete waste of 800.00!!!

Joey and Carrie at DJM are amazing! I installed a VF S/​C kit onto my 2004 R32 back in Sept ’12, mailed my ECU to them and they loaded the UM software and all of the features I wanted. They went the extra mile to make sure I got my ECU back in time to finish my project. I ran into a few snags with my install, and Joey walked me through it on the phone. Talk about service! (I live in Fairbanks, AK and there is no VW dealer or Euro shops in my town.)
I have purchased random performance bits from them when I am in town near the shop, and they are always spot on with the pricing and inventory.
I would recommend this shop to anyone who wants competent and friendly technicians working on their VW/​Audi.

I drove all of the way from Seattle to have DJM work on my 2008 VW R32 and I wasn’t disappointed. They had been recommended by another R32 owner, and after having a few good phone conversations with them I decided to give them a try.
I had them install an almost full exhaust (downpipes back), sway bars, and a UM engine and DSG tune. I wanted to dyno before and after and they took care of scheduling a local dyno for me AND came along with me to so how the car did.
Their shop is clean, with plenty of parking, and nice, organized bays. Their shop rates, at least compared to Seattle, are very reasonable. Their staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and easy to work with.
While it’s certainly a trek, because of how much I care about my car, I would definitely go here again. In fact, I plan to for my 60k service later this year.
On the same day I was there the driver of a 2004 R32 from just south of Seattle dropped his car off for some work too. I think that says something. Thumbs up Double J.

Proceed with caution!
Be cautious, the shop APPEARS to know what they are doing but be very careful! Here is my story: My 1996 GTI VR6 would not pass DEQ, so I needed some professional help. I normally do not take my cars to shops, but I don’t have a VCDS/​VagCom setup to diagnose emissions issues. I took the car in and they told me it would run about $ 200 to replace some vacuum lines to the secondary air pump and go from there. I received a call from the shop and they said I also needed to replace my plugs, wires and coilpack and was quoted $ 600+.
The car ran fine before I took it to the shop, and when I picked up the car it barely started and barely ran. After driving a bit down the street I pulled over and I proceeded to plug the spark plug wires in all the way, cleared the 6 misfire codes, and the car ran properly … just like it had before I took it in. So basically they wanted me to spend $ 600+ to replace parts that did not need to be replaced because they did not plug the spark plug wires back in (I guess they unplugged them when they removed the intake manifold to replace vacuum hose). I took the car back in, made the owner aware of the issue, and they were not prepared to make right. The car still would not pass DEQ, and they told me I would need to just leave it with them and spend more on diagnostic work. I was not about to let them touch my car again and have them charge me for it.
Lesson is: be very cautious, I’d hate to see what they would have tried to charge if it were my wife taking the car in!

I drove waaaaay across town to see these guys based on the stellar reviews. Not blown away. I came in for a 20K miles service on my Jetta TDI and my only additional thing I asked them to check was brake noise (squealing).
They gave me my keys back at the end and said nothing about the brakes. I asked the counter guy about the results of the brake check and specifically the state of the pads and he checked with the mechanic and the word back was that nothing was wrong with the brakes, and there was «plenty of pad left, front and rear.»
So I drove off with squealing brakes, oh well. A couple of weeks (no more than 200 miles) later I started hearing scraping coming from the rear brakes. I stopped driving the car and made an appointmet to come allllll the way back to Double J to have them looked at.
Surprise surprise — the rear pads were shot and needed to be replaced immediately. Luckily the rotors are fine. I told them politely that I was annoyed that they did not find this during the 30K service a few weeks before, and their response was «maybe there is a dragging caliper or something.» Um, okay. No acknowledgement of the possibility that they could have missed something on the 30K service.
I understand that mistakes happen; what separates average businesses from great ones is when they own up and apologize. That goes a long way with me. I lost an extra half day traveling back there and waiting around.
I’ve gotten equal or better attention to detail at Hillside Imports which is on my side of down, where I feel like I’ve gotten adequate but not amazing service. I ventured out looking for amazing service but I guess the search continues…
Overall my opinion is «meh. I’ve experienced better,» which according to Unilocal = 2 stars. So there you go.
UPDATE: I’ve found amazing service at long last. Matrix Integrated in Portland. Been going there for over a year now. What got me there was their chip tuning, but now I go there for everything! AMAZING customer care. FINALLY!!!

These guys are great, nuff said. I know next to nothing about cars, but I work with tons of people in my profession, and they are some of the best. Joey and SuperDave go the extra mile to make sure that my car is well-​taken care of, that the work is done on time, and that it is affordable as well. They go out of their way to make sure that the customer is satisfied, which I really appreciate. Not only that, but they are willing to sit with you and discuss the ins and outs of your car for as long as you like. Which can take a while with me, and they don’t mind a bit!
They are at a new location, at 122^nd and Airport way. It has a nice waiting area, lots of parking, and you can see right into the shop, which looks pretty neat and clean. And somehow (miracle of miracles!) they manage to have a nice bathroom! Not necessarily crucial to the business of fixing cars, but it’s a nice touch for the patrons :)
Bottom line: the staff at Double J Motorwerks know what they are doing. They all own VWs or Audis, and they simply love working on those cars, and helping people like me to take great care of our own German autos.
