Delphina’s Bakery

I saw an ad on Craigslist for free sourdough bread: «We are running tests for a new product and have tons of leftovers. Product is an organic sourdough. Has been uncovered overnight. Would be good free feed for a farm animals. Delphina’s Bakery in NE PDX. Pickup only.»
I called in to inquire if there was any left, and your employee Emily answered the phone. She was incredibly rude. She said she couldn’t give me any information because she allegedly knew nothing about the ad and proceeded to talk over me to give me corporate’s number. She then proceeded to tell me I’d need to come check in person if there was any bread left if I wanted to know because there was «no way for her to check, «which doesn’t make logical sense to me. I was perfectly cordial and polite asking about the bread, but for some reason she was very short with me and practically hung up on me! If this could be addressed, that would be great. It really makes your company look bad, and leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

After driving by this place countless times, I finally checked it out last week and can’t say I’m glad I did.
In a town with so many amazing bakeries I’m surprised it can stay in business – it’s not that it’s bad, it’s just that the baked goods have that grinding mediocrity of stuff you’d get at a Starbuck’s. On top of the underwhelming nature of the baked goods (what I had was a pumpkin scone and got equally lame cheese sticks to take home), there is no wi-​fi and the interior is pleasant in that it is sunny but not the chairs and overall environment are not very comfortable for relaxing with a cup of coffee.

This morning I stopped in to grab a quick latte’ and ordered it at the counter from a young woman. There was a young man behind the counter also there making the drinks and sandwiches. After ordering, I sat at the bar by the window and read the paper while I waited for my drink. After about 10 minutes passed, I got up and asked the young woman if my latte’ was ready. She seemed flustered and responded that she was sorry but she was very busy and it was not yet finished. The young man was nowhere in sight. I sat down and continued to read the paper. After another 10 minutes I approached the young lady (and by this time the young man was back) and asked again if my latte’ was ready. The two employees looked flabbergasted for a moment than responded that they had made a latte and set it on the counter and that someone must have taken it. I responded that I was sitting not 2 feet from the counter and never head them say that my latte was ready. I asked them if they had vocalized that the drink was ready and received no answer from either server. I then asked the young lady if she recalled my having asked if the latte was ready 10 minutes earlier and still received no response. I asked again and she responded that «she could not work in a hostile environment». I asked her to please answer my question as I was asking a simple question. She responded that she did remember me asking the first time for my drink. The young woman then stated that she actually did NOT remember my asking for my drink the first time (???). I asked if they were smoking weed back there. The young man then said that I should not come into the store anymore. I asked for my money back and left.
In summary, the customer service here sucks. I used to frequent this place (in spite of the frequently slow service) as it is convenient for my location, but just can’t do it anymore. I can understand making a mistake– hey we all do, but the way I was treated by the staff was absolutely insane. If the staff had instead taken responsibility for their error (either by mis-​communicating my order amongst themselves or by failing to vocalize when the drink was ready) and offered to quickly make me a new drink there would have been no problem. Instead they made me as a customer feel like I had been the one who did something wrong. I wrote the management hoping for an apology before writing this review but three weeks later not a word.

Found this bakery on Unilocal when I was staying in Portland. It was near our AirBnB, walking distance, which was a first for us in the three days I was there. And in those days driving down this street with its hip new businesses, my hopes were high. I was pretty disappointed.
First, it’s easy to miss at the end of a large building it shares with some other businesses. It isn’t charming and cute and doesn’t have outdoor seating or big windows or anything else appealing. The service was friendly enough but the selection of baked goods was really underwhelming. Even hungry, I had a hard time choosing something. The coffee drinks were decent, not terribly hot, but good. The pastries were really nothing special though the breads looked promising.

Went for the first time today. The staff acted like I was bothering them. Young guy at the counter laughed when I wanted to not have the tomato cream on my sandwich (put it on anyway I found out when I got home!). It took 20 min for 1 coffee and two sandwiches! Did I mention they were super slow, I was like 1 of 4 people in there. Watched the staff joke around and make others wait. Very unprofessional and the food does not make up for it! Will never be back!

Delicious sandwiches and baked goods! My two favorite are the breakfast sandwich with tomato cream fraiche and the tuna melt with arugula. Their baked good selection changes depending on what they’ve made that day, but most choices are very good. Scones are my favorite choice. They also sell their loaves of bread and have a basket of «day old» pastries, rolls, and loaves for sale which is always fun to pick through. Great choice for breakfast and lunch.

Tried it for the first time today. The younger guy who took our order was super rude and I have no idea why. Was it because we were there 45 minutes till closing or was it that we were not dressed to his liking? When another guest (hipster looking) came in he was nice to him. Anyways I ordered a tuna sandwich… it was OK, kinda lack luster. My boyfriend ordered a grilled sandwich that he really enjoyed.

Really nice/​prompt staff! Had a super yummy tuna croissant sandwich, will definitely be back!

Yummy coffee and a nice, crispy-​moist-​delicious almond croissant to start my day on the East Side.

Yum yum yum! I stopped by for breakfast and got lunch to take home as well and it was all really good. The mocha I got was good (still way better than anything I have found on the east coast), marionberry cream cheese danish was to die for and the grilled veggie panini with chevre — amazing.
It’s a bakery, so I would expect excellent pastries, which I was not disappointed. The sandwich however, really good. Grilled onions, zuchini, peppers, eggplant in balsamic vinegar and chevre, I believe on Sourdough and grilled — loved it. A little to much balsamic but really that’s not an issue.
Think next time I will get some of their artisan bread as well.

Oh Delphina’s… I want to REALLY like you, mostly because you are so close to me!
I know you’re not suppose to judge a book by it’s cover but this is a good example of where it’s pretty spot on. Outside is kinda drab, the inside is the same, nothing special. The storefront is set up kind of awkwardly with the front counter right by the front door and all the seating inside.
I’ve had several pastries here which were good but nothing really stands out as very memorable. Coffee/​Espresso is good to but again, nothing too memorable. I would like to see more breakfast options there. I would love to see more bagels and bagel sandwiches. The breakfast panini’s are good but again, I wold imagine to see some breakfast croissant sandwiches or something.
It’s apparent that Delphina’s main clientele isn’t the consumer who is coming in for a sandwich on the go. It would go a long way for me if they beefed up their menu (especially breakfast). Overall not a bad place to go but it could be sooooo much better.

This place is terrible! Flat out sucks giant donkey balls. I rarely eat pastries, but maybe once every two or three months I’ll get a craving for some baked goods when I just gotta have a delicious pastry. It’s my fault that I never learn, but I ride to Delphina’s each time (three in total) and whenever I get there they have literally one or two OVERPRICED pastries for sale of absolute shit quality. I wouldn’t even feed this sh#t to my neighbors dog.
The servers are rude. The selection sucks. The pastries are outrageously overpriced.
I’m surprised to say this, but as a supporter of local and family owned businesses, next time you want some muffins or a croissant, do yourself a favor and go to Safeway!

A group buy brought me here for our first time, but it won’t be our last. We each had a sandwich, got a loaf of bread, and about 5 pastries which we’re still sampling through. The rosemary bread helped make their sandwich even more delicious. I can’t wait to get a loaf.
The loaf of bread we bought went great with homeade lasagna for dinner, and I’m planning our next 4 meals around it, it was that good. I will try and recreate one of their sandwiches at home.
I’m not a big pastry/​sweets person, and I’m usually dissapointed when I go try the popular bakeries. This is my new favorite, I enjoyed everything. The peaches and cream danish was not too sweet, and a delicious treat I will dream about, but reluctantly shared with my husband who was as pleased as I was.
The chocolate and almond croissants were really good, and I very much enjoyed the mini lemon scone for breakfast. He also loved his coffee cake for breakfast.
I’m glad they’re so close to my mom’s house, because I will definitely make many more trips here for peaches and cream dream danishes and to try more of their goods.

5 stars just for the croissants. Other baked goods are really good as well but these are THE BEST croissants I have had. And I have had them all over the world… I even make my own. Best if warmed prior to eating. MMMMMMMMMM!

I was sick so the BF drove to Delphinas to get me a sandwhich and soup.
I had the tomatoe Gorgonzola soup that ws amazing! Perfect mix of creamy richness with chunky tomatoe.
I also ordered the rebuen which was beyong good. Better than my moms. So yeah. Pretty good.

So now that it has been over a year and a half since my last review (and with the encouragement of the management at Delphina’s) I tried it again today at lunchtime. I am very pleased at the changes Delphina’s has made. There is a new design to the interior/​counter area which has a better flow and the staff are much more attentive than before.
I was kindly greeted at the counter as were the folks ahead of me. The gal behind the counter was very patient as my husband and I pondered the abundant sandwich selections. We placed our order and sat in a pleasantly clean area that was highlighted by a good selection of music.
As soon as our sandwiches came out, we went from pleased to impressed. I had the Salami and Chevre egg sandwich which was fantastic and the husband had one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I have tasted this side of the Grilled Cheese Grill.
If you live in the neighborhood, there is no reason for you not to go here on a regular basis and if you live in the nearby area, it is a great place to check out when passing through.

I’ve been to this place in the past for some buttery, crispy and flaky chocolate croissants — and yes they are to die for. But I visited Delphina’s yesterday in search of something more savory and filling.
They let me order a sandwich the way I wanted — wonderfully tender and salty corned beef; fresh lettuce, tomato and cucumber; Dijon mustard, mayo, and sweet garlic aoili — all nestled lovingly inside Dephina’s own French baguette.
I said GOD-​DAMN! Where have you been all my life? Probably the best sandwich I’ve ever had in the PDX, and it cost me $ 6.00.

I can’t figure out why this business doesn’t have more reviews — it’s a hidden gem. The pastries are every bit as good and fresh as other bakeries, with way better prices at Delphina’s. Breads are delicious, even the day-​olds. The panini are wonderful. Service is perfect. Coffee = great. Perhaps a bit off of your beaten path, but well worth the detour.

I may be biased, as this place is right down the road from my house, but DAMN: it is TASTY in there! The prices seem Portland-​normal to me (it’s cheaper than Whole Foods, but more expensive than Safeway). They serve Illy coffee (which, while not as awesome as Stumptown, still is quite respectable), have lovely friendly staff, and freakin’ delicious baked goods. My basic test of a good bakery is whether the place makes almond croissants with a decent almond filling baked in rather than being added after baking (lazy bakeries make all their croissants the same, then cut open a few and slap some almond filling in post-​bake). Delphina’s gets a gold star (and a sparkly unicorn sticker!) for their pan au chocolate and almond croissants that are made the tasty way.
If you hang around for a bit, too, you might get lucky and get some free scones. Or check out their day old rack, where sometimes soft challah bread begs to be taken home with you.
Also, their breakfast paninis? YUM.

Hmmm… My experience bears zero resemblance to the previous 3 reviewers’. On the suggestion of Gretchen W., we met here today pre-​JRT dog-​walk. It was clean, efficient, friendly… there were not a lot of the bells ‘n whistles that seem popular right now. This is an old fashioned high quality bakery, and I like the straight forward approach. I enjoyed a cherry gallette very much. The pastry was flaky, buttery, crisp. There was just the right amount of sugar crystals sprinkled on top. Yep. Real sugar. Not stevia, not honey, not some sort of substitute! The cherries inside the gallette were sweet, but not cloying. I liked this a lot, and especially enjoyed it with my white peony tea. It was a terrific combination. While there I took advantage of the opportunity to purchase a tasty loaf of fresh bread. The pastry, tea, & loaf of bread set me back a walloping $ 7.95.
It was fun to be introduced to another fine local business, have a fun coffee date with a new friend, and see a part of PDX I am not familiar with. Win: win all ’round! I’ll be back!
