History

Established in 1987.

Founder and CEO/President Dan Brettler opened Car Toys’ doors back in 1987 in Bellevue, Washington. It was an instant success in delivering premier mobile electronic products and service that rose above the rest. They originally said installation time for car alarm was 4 hours and cost about $ 500, so I stayed near instead of going back home because I just moved in this area and not too familiar with area to get around as much in dark out side. However, installation did not get finished after 4 hours and told me to wait 1 more hour, but did not get finish 1 hour later and finished 6 hours of waiting. If I knew, it takes 6 hours I have gone home. Lack of communication and not taking serious about people’s time value.
Lack of quality work. After they installed car alarm system, my car ramp start showing up the two rear doors and the trunk opens every 5min. I had to lock every time it showed to turn the ramp off. And 3 days after my car was broken into by someone. Alarm did not go off. I am pretty sure, it was not installed right. I brought my car back to this store, and they kind of fixed it, but I feel my car is not like good as before installed. Turn on and off the ramp is Very destructive while driving. Plus I don’t enjoy talking to people there. Not great services and customer treatment for waiting that many hours. They are thinking only themselves. This is the one of the worst and very traumatic shopping experience living in Portland and Hillsboro area for 16 years. I had much better customer service in many other auto stores in the past. I would not even give one star!
I saw at least 3 people were in same time to address issues of their work while I was there for the second time. Please be careful. The Cheapest service and quality. Don’t let them bossing around customer is the boss. Manager did say sorry about car was break in, but did not apologize any word about lack of their quality work with recall. Safety and life are the priority when it comes to car. Large Red Flag.

I really rarely write reviews, but I was so grateful for the kindness and help of the people at car toys. Kevin really helped me. I had tried to install a radio myself but done it unsafely and ultimately we found out I blew a fuse. They did everything with close attention while explaining it all so I could potentially fix it in the future. I haven’t had such a good customer service experience in a long time. They’re far from me, but it’s well worth the drive over.

I got my car detailed here by purchasing a Groupon and they did a good job. Some stains on the car seats remained, but they told me they went over the seats 4 times each. I was expecting that some of the stains would be to deep.

Car Toys did an amazing job detailing my car! It looks brand new inside! They got every little crack and it is absolutely spotless! They worked on it for about 5 hours and didn’t miss a spot!!! Will definitely be going back!!!

I HAVE BEEN TO CAR TOYS MANY TIMES (MOST RETURN TRIPS DUE TO LACK OF QUALITY WORK ON THE INSTALL) OVER The YEARS, Typically Jantzen Beach. I thought maybe it was the store itself, so I thought I would try to store on 122^nd and Halsey. I can confidently tell you poor customer service and poorer work quality must be the Mantra for Car Toys across all stores. Sales people talking amongst themselves, while customers are waiting for assistance, lack of product knowledge, and lack of adherence to scheduling and completion processes. In short, GO ANYWHERE ELSE! Look at the vast majority of other reviews for this business, and you will see my experience is not an isolated one.

I brought my 2008 sedan in for an interior and exterior detail. The guys recommended I add a buff polish on as well to remove several years of sap and scuffs that I thought were permanent. When I picked my car up, it was like NEW! The attention to detail was amazing. Every crevice was clean, my paint job looked brand new and smooth. The crew was friendly and all seemed to take a ton of pride in their work. I’ve been having my cars detailed and customized at Car Toys since 1998. Their work stands the test of time! I wouldn’t even give this place one star. Talk about the most piss pour business, well you can’t call it a business if they’re trying to rip you off. Up sales is the name of they’re game. My son bought me a stereo system for my birthday. Paid for it and the installation. I came to get it installed and the manager told there was a mistake on their part, for the installation fees. He wanted another $ 160 more. He was not in any going to install stereo for the price that was already quoted and paid for. He was going to give money back and refused to honor the written quote. I asked to contact the owner and they refused that information and laughed at me. Places like this need to be shut down… I will be reporting them to the better business bureau. Stay away from this place!!! You’ll know the manager I’m talking about. He is the bald guy that’s about 45 trying to look like he’s twenty something with his goofy ass little soul patch of a beard… Not a decent person at all…

Some people treat themselves to a glass of wine or some ice cream after a long day and although I do that somedays too… I decided to treat myself to the interior detailing Groupon from Car Toys. OH BOY was I impressed by the work here, specifically from Joey. My car honestly looked pretty disgusting but Joey really took the time and energy to make it look 110% and I so appreciated that! Thank you guys!

I wasted my time by going to Cay Toys on NE Halsey today — they wouldn’t sell me the parts I needed to install a pair of speakers and wanted to charge me $ 100 for the entire job. Yeah, to turn some screws on some speakers — something I could have easily done myself with the right parts. The speakers I wanted to install had only cost me $ 65 so $ 100 to install was outrageous. They’ll tell you anything over the phone to get you to bring in your vehicle. Don’t bother.
Do business locally:
The guys at Mobile West had me in and out of their shop in minutes and they ended up doing a large part of the install for about half of what Car Toys wanted. Solid guys and very flexible. A+ for Mobile West!

I made the mistake of adding a service contract to my purchase of a new sound system in my Grand Prix.
year or so later:
Had a problem with the volume knob falling off.
Contacted them.
the best they could do was to send my radio out for 4 – 12 WEEKS.
I spoke with someone in person. The thought was that the radio was a LUXURY and it wouldn’t KILL ME to wait.
I ordered a replacement knob myself for 14.00 (including freight) and it now works fine.
I cannot consider 4 – 12 weeks for a service contract paid repair anywhere near adequate customer service.
If you must buy there, do NOT buy a service contract. you would get more pleasure by throwing your money out the window of your car.

Not impressed. I made an appointment to get a new stereo in my 2003 Acura RL. I selected a deck one day and was told to come in the next morning with an appointment at 11AM, which is when they open on Sundays. I brought my car in at that time and was told it would take about 3 – 4 hours. I called at 2:15 from the Clackamas mall where I was killing time and asked for an estimate of when they thought it would be completed. I was told it would be finished in another hour.
Long story short, I came back to the store when they told me to and they told me it would be 15 more minutes. I went and sat in the back only to be told 10 mins later that they had JUST STARTED on my car at 3:30, and it wouldn’t be done until 7. I am currently sitting at their store waiting another 3 and a half hours, which is when they close. Not sure why I made an appointment when they didn’t start installing my stereo until 4 and a half hours after the appointment time.
Staff was very unapologetic which to me is ridiculous. Something that should have taken 4 hours at the most has now occupied my entire day.

I would choose zero if I could. Employees are lazy and undeserving of any wages. Poor work ethic and I hate to be lied to when they’re incompetent at installs. I was lied to regarding my window motor. They never looked at but took my money anyways. Go to best buy! My bad

Pressed for time — I went here for a small Alpine amplifier clearly listed on their website for $ 129.99. When I got to this location, and asked for it, I had to show them on their own website what it was. When I walked in asking — the salesperson had no idea what I was talking about and was really quick to answer «We don’t have that».
Then — for added excitement I was told the item was $ 159.99 when they pulled it from the back.
Be careful shopping here — the store (s) and it’s website have different prices. Make sure you make Car Toys honor the correct price. After politely handing the salesperson my iPhone with the Car Toys website, price, and exact item, they STILL wouldn’t honor the price. They insisted on adding the item to their cart on my phone, closing the browser, and then finally they sold it to me. «We just want to make sure»… «We’ve never seen it this low». Of course that’s the first concern — make as much money off the customer as possible. They even said «it must be on sale» which it never was.
Once I got through the awkwardness of actually having to prove to them the right price — I dashed out with the quickness and installed the amp in their parking lot. Just in case there was an issue with the actual unit. Luckily there wasn’t. This place is horrible. Every location. If the salespeople were somewhat personable and friendly I would give this place another half a star. Definitely not an entire one. Wait it out and order from Amazon. Car Toys simply isn’t worth anyone’s time.

Their Lifetime Warranty on installations is real. Four years ago they transferred my satellite receiver into my then-new Prius. After a recent routine Toyota servicing, the satellite radio no longer worked and Sirius «support» was not helpful and suggest I buy a new radio. Car Toys’ Tom Ratts read the radio manual and tracked down the solution when nobody else could — a couple key presses at the right time and the satellite radio worked again. That combination of policy and staff is why I’ll keep going to Car Toys.

I purchased a car detailing Groupon from Car Toys, and my car has seriously never been cleaner. I run a dog business, so I had a LOT of pet hair embedded in the seats, and I think they removed every. single. hair. It was a little spendy, especially when they tacked on the price for pet hair removal and hot water extraction cleaning, but certainly worth it. I have had my car detailed by other businesses before, and it has honestly never looked even close to this good before. John was very helpful behind the counter, and Joey stayed several hours past his shift to finish my car. I am very satisfied with the service I received.

We purchased a new receiver, front and rear speakers, amp and subwoofer for our van in March 2012. The sales crew was very helpful but not pushy. The install crew was quick and competent. But what really earns them five stars is that that a year and a few weeks later we came back to the store with a problem in the front right speaker. Of course we just missed the one year warranty, but they said they would take a look and see what was up. Turns out the company that replaced our broken windshield awhile back had neglected to cover the speakers when they did some grinding, and metal shavings got into the speaker. Not good. Luckily the Car Toy guys took the speaker out, gave it a good cleaning and it’s now almost back to normal. The cost? Nada. The guy that did the service wouldn’t even let me give him a tip.

Absolutely the worst worst customer service I have ever encountered. I walked into this place all smiles after a massage and they wiped it off with rudeness. The 4 people at the counter standing around (apparently they are ALL managers!) bantering but were so put off by helping a paying customer. I would ask questions about my order like how long it would take, even small talk and was met by icy blank looks and «I don’t know what you’re talking about» or «I’m just in charge of your transaction». Really? I will never ever come here again and further more tell everyone I know not to come here. I wish I’d gone to the Beaverton location. NE portland: yuck

I needed an Intoxalock installed.
First the manager said the installation would take ½ to 1 hour. I went off to read. Ninety minutes later I asked the status. The manager went to the installation area, came back and said it was just about done.
I went back to read for another 20 mins. I again asked the status. The manager went to the installation area. We walked out the overhead doors with a set of keys in his hand. We went over to folks sitting in a vehicle and proceeded to talk with them for a few minutes. By the time he came back in, people had asked if anyone worked there and were waiting in line behind me. He rudely and loudly told me my car had not been seen until one hour after my appointment (set by the Intoxalock company, with my confirmation) and told me it would still be a while because they ran into problems. 15 mins later he found me reading and apologized. They had been working on the installation since the appointed time. 15 mins later it was ready.
HOWEVER, when I got home I learned they had not signed all the certifications that I needed to send. They’d only signed one. Also, they had not given me documentation referred to in the info they gave me.
But wait! Also, they didn’t know how to work the device. Fortunately, I’d read it online before going. I ended up having to go back TWO times. There was never a «We’re sorry.» They were rude each and every time. And the way they left my vehicle! That’s another story!

This is where it all began, the Great 2 year long CRV Radio Debacle!
I purchased a higher end stereo system here for the D’s CRV, pretty cool Birthday present, right?. 1 year and 1 day later it just quit working. Yep, 1 day past the warranty period. When we get the car in to this place and explain what happened, we get no troubleshootig response at all. Their response is, «here is the new model of that same system». Now, I realize it was out of warranty and I understand that they could not handle it as a warranty replacement. I also get that everyone working in this shop was in high school like 2 weeks ago and may not understand the value of old guys with disposable income. But you can’t throw me some kind of a bone here? A small discount, call the factory rep and see what they can do? Something to make me feel like you give a crap about my business? And why would I buy the same deck that 1 year ago I spent some major $$$ on and it failed? At least try and pawn off some other manufacturer’s deck on me?
So I went elsewhere and bought another system, that ended up being a whole nother debacle. When we finally got to someone who actually knew what they were doing with a car stereo, you know what we found? The orginal installation of the car stereo, done by this shop, was a nightmare. The power and ground connections weren’t adequate for the stereo that was installed and probably caused the original decks failure. And those brand new super speakers that they talked me into, they were at least a 5 year old model.
I hate, yes hate, writing bad reviews. Usually I just chalk a bad exeperience up to just that, 1 bad experience and not a bad business. But even several years later I still bristle everytime I drive past this place. Stay away!

I will never go back here.
The stereo I purchased broke (as in completely unusable) 3 days after the one-year warranty expired. Seriously?
These guys were so sorry, and so willing to sell me a brand new radio, same brand as the one that broke. Huh? Seriously?
«There is nothing you can do to help me out here? Look at the face plate, I have treated this thing with respect from day one. Not a scratch. I don’t get why it broke given how well I’ve treated it.»
«These things happen.»
Seriously?
I ended up going to a different place for a total stereo overhaul — new everything. In the process of removing the old Alpine speakers, they let me know that these Alpines were a model at least 5 years old, maybe older. I thought I had purchased brand new, current year speakers from Car Toys.
It is so damned cliché to screw over a woman with car troubles. I hate being cliché. Seriously!
