Capoeira Ijexá Pdx

Quality instruction, affordable rates, beautiful space, super-​friendly people and a strong inter-​connected community with lots of opportunities to get involved. There is a fledgling kid’s program as well. I’ve tried out classes, and have always had a blast! Our daughter attended one of their Date Night events too, and had a ton of fun. This group is the real deal, passionate about what they do and inclusive of others! I say, give it a go!

After taking a short 5+ year break from capoeira, I decided to give it a try again. Some friends recommended Capoeira Ijexa and I thank them every day for that. A fun exuberant community that pushes those of all skill levels to their limits. Whether you’re new to capoeira, new to martial arts, or have been doing salto mortals for years, everyone is welcome. The space is clean and large, with mats to work on acrobatics until you can get your feet under you (literally).
In addition to the Portland community, the parent school down in San Francisco welcomes us with open arms, and students and teachers from all levels come up to visit here. I’ve studied martial arts since I was 5 and this is truly the best experience I have found. Physical training, mental sharpening and music, all with people who I consider family… Gotta love that.

This is a great group! Vira Lata teaches excellent classes, the people are so open and friendly, music and culture is infused into every class, and through outreach and friendships among the group members a community is built. It’s awesome; I’m addicted!

This is an excellent place to play capoeira. I’ve been training here for a couple of years now, on and off, and it’s been a consistently great experience. I love the genuine camaraderie among everyone attending and I love Vira Lata’s teaching style. Vira Lata has always welcomed people of every skill level, from complete beginners (the first class is free too!) to visiting capoeirstas with many years under their belt. Also, the space is open and inviting, with high ceilings, hardwood floors (and a softer mat area for practicing floreiros and throws), mirrors on one wall, and spacious clean locker rooms & bathrooms.
I’ve been consistently challenged and have really enjoyed taking capoeira classes here, and I’ve grown as a capoeirista and as a person as a result of being part of this community.
All in all — strongly recommended. If you’re looking for a fun, physical art form, with plenty of community and smiles, or are just curious, come check it out during one of the regular classes and see for yourself.

Amazing group! I had 2 ½ years in Capoeira when i moved to Portland. I spent the first couple of months checking out and training with the various instructors here. Capoeira PDX (USA Capoeira) really pulled me in for a couple of reasons. For starters, everyone I met was extremely welcoming and I sensed a strong comraderie in class — lots of smiles and High Fives. Also, Vira Lata has a great attitude towards learning and towards his students. He leads really interesting classes and I have learned and been challenged with various movements that are fresh and follow a consistent style. I have played and trained with USA Capoeira students at events in the past and I really admire the clean, close, athletic and technical style that is consistent throughout the schools. At this point, I have been training under Vira Lata for 9 months. I can see the effect it has had on my development in the art form and I’m very pleased with that.

An awesome and well-​rounded capoeira class at a great price. I find the classes fun, engaging, and suitable for both beginners and those like myself who are more familiar with capoeira — I learn something new each class!
I also want to add that the space (The Academy of Kung Fu) is one of the nicest I’ve trained in — open, good equipment, and really nice hardwood floors.

I started this class a month ago and I love it so far! It’s fun, a great work out, nice class and people and Nate is a great teacher. I’m a massage therapist and it really helps my range of motion and energy level at work. If you have ever been curious about Capoeira I strongly suggest that you give it a try or even come in to watch one night. I plan on sticking with it for a while!
