Established in 2006, Blue Lotus Henna has become one of Portland Saturday Market’s most popular booths, as well as providing henna services locally and internationally for parties, events, pregnancy and bridal.

Specializing in belly henna, Melanie Ooi (owner and lead artist), is one of the most well known maternity henna artists in the world, creating stunningly original mandala designs for mother’s in Portland and overseas.

From Thailand to Turkey, India to Indonesia, Melanie has spread her talents and gathered design influence from all over the world to bring back to her chosen home of Portland.

Visit the Blue Lotus Henna booth at the Portland Saturday Market every weekend (booth 420 in the 400 row), or make a private appointment in the opulent coziness of the Blue Lotus Henna Parlor in SE Portland, Monday to Friday (1218 SE Ash Street– sorry, no walk-​ins).

Melanie Ooi has been on the artists journey her entire life. From the comic strips and flip books that she drew as a child, to the oil pastel and photography experiments of high school. After years of henna’s whisper in her ear, she finally picked up the cone and found that she had discovered her ideal medium…

Melanie’s earlier artistic influences from years of living in Japan and traveling throughout the far East gradually gave way to the design styles that she was infused with from journeys through Morocco, Turkey and India. Arabesque, paisley and the fierce geometry of Morocco meld with her undying love for Art Nouveau and the deeply instilled design motifs of China.

This is all brought to life through Melanie’s interaction with her clients, as together they co-​create artwork for the skin. She finds the beauty of working with henna is that it brings together her love of art and the magic she finds in connecting with others…
