Annie’s Donuts

Had a really subpar dinner experience, so went to get a donut for dessert at Annie’s. Love Annie’s! Saw the owner of Pip’s Original there (thumbs up for community and supporting good businesses!), so even doughnut experts know this place is good!
Anyway, got some donuts. GREAT customer service… always with a smile, and this last trip was no exception. Totally turned my night around, and I dined on donuts with contentment.
These donuts, by the way? Tasty clouds of sugary, chocolatey, fruity goodness. YUM!

Never even considered going to Voodoo while in Portland, but this place has all the donuts you’ll ever need. Buttermilk bar and raspberry fritter were amazing. Great flavors, no pretense, lots of personality, a nice way to start the morning.

If you’re not a tourist and live in the Portland area and you actually want a good donut, go to Annie’s. Forget Voodoo and Blue Star. Who wants hard cereal or weird blueberry basil bullshit on their donut? Not me. Annie’s serves up fresh, delicious, no-​nonsense donuts in a homey setting. When we went it wasn’t crowded at all. And did I mention it’s cheap?! We got a small coffee, two donuts, and a can of soda for like $ 4.20. My apple fritter was huge and yummy. I could definitely tell it was fried, which is how a donut should be. I don’t like the cakey kind, though they have a couple varieties of those too. The custard in my girlfriend’s bismark looked creamy and amazing and she said that the chocolate glaze was «on point.» The staff is also super nice. I will definitely come back, even if it is a little far away from where we live.

This place is awesome! I don’t go here anymore since I’m vegan now but when I was having donuts, this was my favorite good ol’ donut shop (tied with Tonalli’s).

Look Voodoo is great. Ok. But it’s a tourist trap.

Annie’s is the real deal. Great doughnuts, anonymous coffee and sweet old ladies calling you, «hun».
Annie’s is the sort of place you might see Tarantino hunched over with Keitel sketching out Mr. Wolf.
It’s the kind of place that endures. It endures because it has character, it has no nonsense and it has love.

I LOVE THESE DONUTS. I was honestly shocked that I enjoyed these so much. I wasn’t expecting a lot when I came here but the donuts are so fresh and delicious. There is no need to go over the top with weird flavors. Just good, classic donuts. Can’t go wrong with the maple bar or the cream puff. Strawberry jelly was pretty amazing, too.

This was my first time having a soggy French Cruller. The top part was fine but somehow the bottom was wet/​soggy and gave the donut a very gross texture. My friend had a buttermilk bar and it was much better than mine but nothing special that would make me want to return.

Annie’s has been a staple of NE Portland for about 5 decades during which «Willamette Weekly» frequently awarded her «best donut in PDX». (More Krispe Kreme than the inventive and whimsical VooDoo and Blue Star.)
The plain cake donuts and glazed cinnamon twists are bits of happiness. The maple bars are especially worthy.
Early morning staff is cheery and efficient. Annie’s doesn’t offer gluten-​free alternatives, so bear that in mind.
Annie’s bakery consistently turns out the best donuts in NE Portland. Here’s to another decade.

Never again will you eat a more delicious maple bar. Even the donut holes are rave worthy. The service is awesome and the donuts are life changing!

Sure there’s the famed donuts in the ville, but these are the best! No fancy packaging, just good honest donuts. The French crullers are eggy weggy and the chocolate icing tastes real. The old fashioned donuts are slightly crispy on the outside; that’s a good sign. The icing and sugar glazes are excellent. Oh, and… what??? The apple fitters are great but… Raspberry fritters??? Find out for yourself! Get ‘Em while their hot!
The place itself is 1960s diner with old school lighting, and bright yellow booths.

Based on the Unilocal ratings, i thought Annie’s would be good, but I was disappointed. I thought it tasted just average. However, the maple frosting was delicious.

I can’t even begin to explain how much I love these donuts… I’ve been a customer for so long. I haven’t found a donut here I don’t like. They are HANDS DOWN the BEST in town. Leave the nasty overpriced voodoo for the tourists and take your happy self to Annie’s!

Sorry. These donuts are terrible. I ended up throwing mine away and buying one from Safeway instead. Too sweet. Too oily. Not fluffy enough. Tasted bad. Extra star for the clerk being nice.

Acclaimed Annie’s donuts was my first stop in Portland. I enjoyed an old fashioned and maple bar. The old fashioned is a masterpiece of crispness on the outside and moist tender donut flesh on the inside. The maple bar is a pillow of sweetness with a blanket of maple for warmth.

There are some good donuts in this town. However, the new school places don’t have ‘real’ donut shop hours. Opening at 8 a.m. is when breakfast places open, not donut shops.
Luckily, Annie’s is old school in many ways, including the 5 a.m. opening time. You’re not going to find maple bacon or passion fruit with cocoa nibs donuts at Annie’s. What you will find are the basics. Amazing apple fritters, cream filled, donut holes and raised glazed.
The people behind the counter are super friendly and the hours are in line with what more donut shops should adhere to.

Annie’s is a little hole in the wall donut shop. It’s not a trendy joint like Voodoo or Blue Star, but Annie’s is perfect if you’re in the neighborhood and are craving some fresh donuts.
The jelly flips and Bismarcks are my favorites. If you like filling in your donuts give those a try. The butterfly combines chocolate and peanut butter, which sounds good, but didn’t really work for me.

The selection at Annie’s is massive. The donuts are made fresh throughout the day, and each one is scrumptious. My favorite is the buttermilk bar – it’s rich without being too heavy, and the taste is simple but perfect. And the prices just can’t be beaten.
The sprinkle on top (please forgive the pun) is the customer service. The first time we went in, the coffee was discounted because the server thought it was «a little old.» (The coffee was completely fine.) Attentive service, warm conversation, the kind of old-​school charm that the whole place gives off: it’s precisely what you’d ask for.
Go to Annie’s. It’s absolutely fantastic, and for my money, the best donut place in Portland.

Really good basic donuts! What I mean by basic is the usually suspects (maple bars/​twist) nothing like VooDoo so don’t expect miracles!
Good environment for kids, reasonably priced… I’d come here again.

Cruising the rain-​soaked streets of Portland like a lonely guttersnipe in search of late-​night comfort, I stumbled upon Annie’s Donuts … and a few of her little orphans leftover from what had clearly been a busy day. The display counter was bare, but these weren’t like other orphans filled with gruel and tap dancing with mops. These were orphan doughnuts. I wanted to believe each was special. You know, save the orphans and all. Besides, I was hungry.
Save the orphans. Eat a donut.
A Butterfly donut at Annie’s is more of a beast than a beauty, but it’s a pretty tasty donutster with Chocolate Frosting and Peanut Butter. The donut base was a little dry (no surprise given the late hour), so, the Butterfly would definitely be better fresh (or warmed in the microwave for a few secs).
The PB & Chocolate donut was more memorable than an Old Fashion (Glazed Cake) Doughnut. These classic cake-​style doughnuts are usually one of my go to comfort donuts, but this one was way too sweet and also a little dry.

Yes. Annie’s okay … totally a-​ok (3 stars) … Annie time you want an okay doughnut, it’s an ok time for Annie’s Donuts.

The best classic-​style donut you’ll find in Portland. I’ve been here only a short time, but I feel confident in that claim (yes, I’ve tried nearly every donut in just half a year).
Dirt cheap, great tasting… I don’t know what else to say about a donut.
I did try the chocolate and peanut butter thing once and while that is my favorite ice cream flavor, it doesn’t really work for a donut.
You can’t go wrong with an old-​fashioned or really anything that would be considered «a classic» here. I do wish they’d have a powdered white-​cream filled… That’s my jam.
Side note — the coffee isn’t too bad. You’d expect it to be since I’m sure if comes out of some bulk bag, but it is halfway decent for what it is.
They do have a small amount of seating inside. Take a load off.
