Adam King of Shawarma & Gyro

So far today, I’ve eaten a piece of pie from a pie I bought two days ago and stored in the fridge, and I’ve eaten the lamb gyro I bought yesterday and stored on the fridge.
I first noticed that the lamb is more of the lunch meat-​style lamb than chunks of lamb you can at least imagine being cooked in the food cart. The veggies are fresh. It tastes fine. I wouldn’t get it again, because I prefer lamb chunks that look like what I think of as meat.
The pie (Shari’s) was good, each piece as good as the piece of pie I ate before.
And yet, my stomach is gurgling in that «I’ve eaten something that was unclean unclean unclean!» sort of way. I leave you to draw your own conclusions.
Whether or not I got food poisoning there or not, the lamb was lunchmeat-​style lamb strips. And I’m not going back.
EDIT: It should be noted that the owner posted a reply to this review after contacting me multiple times over the last several months – his story changing on each occasion. I’ve reported each message (including the one below, IF it is still there), and I’ve blocked all contact from this guy, but he CONTINUES to post replies, which eventually Unilocal notifies me of because owners and users seem to be coded a bit differently. In any case, I wouldn’t eat here, and I certainly am not going to talk to a guy who keeps contacting me even though I’ve asked him not to do so. It’s just one review. Let it go. I’d delete it, but then people looking for a good food cart might end up with food poisoning instead. Plus, I’m not a big fan of rewarding harassment.

Who in her right mind will say no to french fries in a delicious gyro? For about $ 8 you can get a delicious lamb gyro filled with a little fresh vegetable, a good helping of sauce and juicy lamb AND fries!
Thank goodness this is far away from where I live since I would be visiting Adam’s every week!

Wow. What can I say. When 1:30 AM comes around, and you’ve caught yourself a nasty case of the drunchies, this is the place to go!
Adam is a great guy and serves up the best Shawarmas and Gyros around! He piles them SO high with meat and veggies and whatever you get, so they are completely stacked and well worth the price. He also makes, bottles, and sells his own garlic sauce that is TO DIE for.
There is a sign on his cart that more people should remember: Good food isn’t always cheap, and cheap food isn’t always good.
¹⁰⁄₁₀ would drunkenly eat again.

My friend and I took a spring break trip up to Portland (my first time there) from the Bay Area. After successfully avoiding speeding tickets from two different Oregon patrolmen, we arrived in the city pretty late. We were spent and really in need of booze and food. We finally got our hotel situation settled around 2, and unfortunately missed the booze option, so we walked the streets to get VooDoo donuts and a meal food. And we arrived.
My friend got the lamb shawarma. I was planning on stopping by a cart next to it, but the second she took a bite demanded I try it. I like shawarma just as much as the next person, but my god I had never tasted something so delectable! My life was transformed.
I immediately ordered my very own and we happily chowed down. The balance of meat/​sauces/​veggies is perfection. Reasonably priced and completely filling. Plus the guy who makes it was delightfully friendly and familiar, as though we’d been customers of his for years.
Cannot wait to come back to this city for another delicious wrap.

Loved the food, it was fresh and delicious and Sam made adjustments to my chicken shwarma since I can not eat wheat. It’s a good night if I end up at this place. Since that usually means I’ve been drinking I could never remember where the place was. I actually spent a little more than an hour hunting this place down one day, so I could remember where it was.
Normally I stick to just the American food, so I get corn dogs, hot dogs, and fries. They are all excellent and my friends always seem to love the non-​American options. It kind of reminds me of the Döner restaurants all over the place in Germany, and I have been searching for that type of food a long time since coming back.
In short: great food, cool owner, and probably the best late night food in Portland.

One late night in Portland after a long night at the Dirty down the street we stumbled upon this food stand. There was a chicken shwarma rice bowl special that consisted of chicken shwarma with garlic tahini sauce over a bowl of rice and french fries. That chicken bowl was one of the best things we ate on our trip to Portland. All the flavors and textures of this creation just come together to make a hearty satisfiying meal, especially late night, and I think it was like $ 6.00 too. I’d highly recommend this place if you happen to walk by it.

visited here the other day and i had my mind blown away by this simple shawarma… i mean all it took was some super special garlic sauce, grilled onions, grilled lamb, and french fries… all rolled into one massive wrap and BOOM, you got yourself a legitimate late night/​drunk meal…
tender pieces of succulent lamb… creamy garlic sauce… and crispy french fries… all rolled into one wrap… like fat person sensory overload… my kinda meal.
whether you live around town or are just visiting the area… make sure you bundle up and go here for a late night bite… you will not be disappointed!!!

Excellent food! I tried several items on the menu and none of them disappoint! The lamb shwama is best! It’s a perfect location too. Right in downtown next to all the clubs. Perfect for those late night snacks after the bars close. Try it out, you will love it!

My boyfriend and I love this place! Although we live in the Bay Area, CA we always make sure to stop by and see Adam King of Shawarma.
If you want a good Gyro go here you will not be displeased. Adam makes his own specialty sauce and boy is this good! In addition, he places fries that are crisp and fresh which add another dimension to your typical gyro.
I can’t wait to go back to Portland to visit!

Late night with friends in the Voodoo district sometimes calls for more than just a sugary-​bacony overload. After a quick search on the Unilocal app, I found Adam. It was perfect for what I needed; filling, tasty food, and a generous portion of it.
I got the Chicken Shawarma, and it was ooooh so good. The sauce was definitely the best part of the whole thing. It was a great sandwich, but I think I’ll get it without fries next time around. The fries kind of gave it a deep-​fried flavor that overpowered the sandwich and took away from the juicy fresh taste of a normal gyro.
Adam was really nice, and served up the grub lickety split. I only had to talk to one drunk person before my food was ready. I’ll be back if I’m in the area at that time of night again!

Went by for lunch today with a friend because we really wanted gyros. Yum. Just plain yum. I requested no fries on mine and the young man was vey accommodating. The meat was perfectly cooked, the garlic sauce was perfect. Will definitely be back.
Oh…and don’t forget to get a crème brûlée beignet next door at Donut o Rama… damn!

Nothing to envy the next door Big Ass Sandwich. They have a similar version with lamb on a pita bread that is spectacular. They are open till very late. Went there at 12midnight and left full!

Adam is so friendly and remembers his frequent customers. Not to mention he has the BEST late night shawarma! Don’t forget the hot sauce!!!

Madness. Cheap, delicious, and filling; one Schwarma is easily enough for two meals. The homemade garlic sauce was splendid, and Sam mentioned he owns the «Crème Brulee Beignet» cart next door; dang, really? What else could you ask for? Best of all, Sam’s a gracious, benevolent host and says he loves his calling. Thanks, Sam!

My boyfriend and I discovered Adam’s about 8 months ago. I do not remember how we came to find this amazing food cart, which means alcohol was probably involved. Since that fateful evening, Adam’s is on our favorite place to eat list. We live in SW so it is an easy drive. We tend to eat later in the evening like 9 or 10, and many places are closing, so Adam’s is the perfect spot.
I am a creature of habit and always get the same thing, the lamb shawarma. I love lamb, and Sam does it right! His garlic sauce is great, the spicy sauce he puts on is just right. The lamb is cooked to perfection and the french fries make it a perfectly rounded meal with meat, veggies (lettuce and tomatoes), and a starch. Come hungry, if you can finish the whole thing, you will be stuffed!
My boyfriend tends to be more experimental and has tried many things off the menu. He loves them all!
Drunk or sober. you should definitely check this cart out. It is extremely clean, high quality, and will make your mouth say «mmmmmmmmm.»

Been drinking all afternoon, it’s 10:30 and we need some dinner. Adam took care of us in a serious way. His wraps were so delicious and portable. Perfect to eat while walking to the next bar. I wish I could tow him back to the SF Bay Area so I could hit him up all the time.

This was the best street food I’ve had in a long time. Maybe it was the alcohol, but the gyro has been haunting my dreams. I didn’t even know what I was ordering I just pointed a picture… soooo soooo good.

Oh this fella errs on the side of serving his customers heaping portions— so far, so good! He’s also open till 3 in the am on weekends, in keeping w/​not a few of the carts in the immediate vicinity of Voo-​Doo and their ubiquitous undead army of round the clock, nit-​wit tourists.
However, feel free to use this review as a cautionary tale: Even though there is a laminated menu w/​great big pictures of all their menu items, I came to find out quickly that they are «not necessarily» cut and dried representations of what you’ll actually be receiving. I got a lamb steak (yeah! Lamb steak) gyro for $ 9, and a chicken schwarma for I think $ 8. Both were huge and the flesh of each was tender and expertly prepared. It seemed to me the chicken was definitely meatier, for what that’s worth. The hot sauce was a zesty and winning touch.
But hold the phone— both wraps came festooned, just like w/​their next door neighbors, Big Ass Sandwiches, with enormous wads of super greasy french fries! What gives w/​this disturbing trend! In the first place, these wraps were just fine, as is, and didn’t need any tasty filler (though more meat wouldn’t have been objectionable). In the second place, there are surely cultures at large in our world that are collectively just not getting enough calories in their diet, and might benefit from such, um, supplementation — -but will I be shouted down as a nutjob if I proclaim that we do not, at this time, fit the criterion for said culture?
Many menu items are pictured featuring french fries. I do not recall seeing any fries on neither the lamb steak nor the chicken — this is, in fact, why I picked ‘em. So if you’re looking to cut a good 1,000 or so easy calories from your menu item @ Adam King’s cart, make sure to ask for no fries! Then you can feel good about turning right around and asking for extra of his home-​made yogurt-​garlic-​olive oil sauce, which is fan-​tastic!
I’ll definitely be paying a return visit to this cart — most likely on a very late weekend night. Adam’s a swell fella, and has a very solid product. I hope it propels him to Oprah-​stinkin’ richness!

Late night and in search of food, and the yummpy scent coming from Adam’s food card beckoned us close. Adam is incredibly friendly and talks quite candidly about his food. We went with a lamb wrap that was really really good. Of course, this was close to 2am and such, but it certainly hit the spot. Definitely worth a stop if you’re overwhelmed with the plethora of food carts. Give it a try!
