The Russian School of Mathematics (RSM) opened in 1997 with the goal of creating a unique after-school mathematics program. Our hope was to build a systematic education based on the traditions of Russia and Europe and adapted to the needs of American students.
Our mission is to help all children build a solid foundation in math and logical reasoning, self-confidence, and a love of learning that will last throughout their lives.
Developed by a team of passionate and knowledgeable experts and based on innovative research into children’s mental development, RSM’s curriculum is unique in the US. Each lesson at our math academy builds carefully on the concepts introduced in previous lessons and preceding years. Our math school does not teach to a test or rush through concepts. Instead, we emphasize derivation via logical and critical thinking over memorization.
Our goal is to provide our students with a foundation of deep mathematical knowledge and an agility of thought that will serve them well throughout their entire lives.
An RSM student enters the program at his individual level within his grade. Our math programs ensure that all students are appropriately challenged. Because our curriculum is consistent for every class, moving between levels, grades and even between branches is always a possibility.
History
Established in 1997.
The Russian School of Mathematics (RSM) emerged from a partnership between a passionate parent and a gifted teacher. As a mother, Inessa Rifkin believed that it was her responsibility to provide her children with the tools to succeed. As a teacher, Irina Khavinson believed that the combination of a good teacher and great curriculum can unlock the potential in every child. As immigrants, they both were convinced that the road to a great education begins with a strong foundation in mathematics.
Today, RSM is one of the largest after-school math enrichment programs in the Northeast, and serves more than 13,000 students across eight states.
The Port Washington branch has been open since October of 2014.
Victoria Gartstein, the branch director, has a background in Physics and Engineering. She brings to RSM 18 years of experience teaching mathematics and computer science in Estonia and in the US. She taught in United States public schools.
