Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace

Very nice store, music not too loud or too quiet, wide selection of foods. And the inside of the store looks amazing.

It’s one of the best stores in the area but that’s not saying it’s great just that there’s nothing else in the area. You really have to pick … some items are good somethings are not. Some of the prices are just ridiculous and not justified. I also regularly find there’s issues with items tasting old and stale and clearly still being sold when they should be tossed in the garbage such as a recent meat quiche.

Good selection of produce. The seafood section sometimes has pleasant surprises (like cheap lobsters or crawfish), but that seems to be rarer these days.

Large selection of prepared foods, hot buffet, good hot soups, make your own salad section, fresh pasta section, large imported cheese section with knowledgeable staff, on site bakery, nice sitting area with tables and condiments, quality brand names, fresh meats & produce. Staff are pleasant & professional. Their in-​store pizzeria is great, although I will admit it depends on who is making the pizzas. The daytime shift makes the thin, crispy, well done pizzas which are my favorite and very reasonably priced. Minus one star because the prices are a tad high for everything else, then again with the overhead they must have in this large, well manned store it’s understandable.

Very impressed with this store, have been many times and they have so much to offer. Great cheese department with a huge selection, awesome candy department, great quality meats/​seafood, large bakery and everything I have tried is delicious. Their mozzarella is the best in the country. The deli is unlike any other supermarket, MANY great prepared foods and very good pizza.

This is in regards to the bakery. After this experience, I can officially declare us done with uncle Gs. It’s just overpriced, overrated. We spent $ 14 on five small pastries from the bakery and somehow I wound up eating leftover pepperidge farm cake from the day before because it was preferable, they were THAT bad. Somehow everything tasted exactly the same and was bland and dull, beautiful LOOKING but taste awful. Don’t waste your money at this bakery.

Well, if paying 2 to 3 times the price for food is your idea of fun… go ahead!!! Knock yourself out! Lol
Prepared «specials» are to the point of near mold! They will leave food soggy and spoiled on the shelves.
Im talking about their own cooked and packaged food for your immediate heat and serve meals. Lol but wait! The expiration date still has a week more!!! Must be good, right!
Again, another sucker market for clueless Suffolk County folk who think they are Nassau and New York hip because they are shopping in an «Italian Marketplace»
People, go to Nassau and see what real market places are!

Authentic Italian groceries. Love the cheese department. Excellent great quality meats. Try the Williams Sliders. Great sales! Check out circular each week. Extensive pasta selections fresh and dry.
Only negative is that they are are the pricey side unless you buy items on sale.
The candy department is the best area. Great Gelato. Try the sea salted dark chocolate caramel and their taffy. Also huge selection of sugar free chocolates.

Let’s start this review off by disregarding the fact I had to use google translate to figure out how to say ‘very impressed’ in Italian!
But really, this supermarket is HUGE! Anything at all that you need they got it!
This store is accommodated with all types of specialty shops:
–Pizza shop (Sicilian is great)
–Sushi that is made to order
–Candy shop with ice cream & gelato
–Bakery shop (always sampling!)
–Excellent butcher shop
–Cheese shop! A big cheese shop!
–Seafood shop with amazing hot soups!
You really should not come into this place if you are hungry! On the daily they offer 9 varieties of hot soup (I’m maniac for good soup.) 6 are offered right in the front when you walk in and the seafood department has 3 of their own towards the back.
Right next to the soup is a salad bar that is to DIE for! All the works they have for you! 3 different kinds of chicken, mass amounts of veggies and dressing! Mama Mia! There’s like 6 different choices at your finger tips!
On the other side of the salad bar is a hot foods bar. Fresh pasta, chicken wings, lasagna. Yummm! This is great if your on the run and don’t have time to cook lunch or dinner!
The selection of fruits and veggies is unbelievable! So fresh and clean! No dirty strawberries here! They offer a really nice variety of sliced up ready to eat combinations also.
Are you a beer connoisseur? Well Giuseppe’s is the right place for you! They’ve got about 3 walls of all types of beer from Raging Bitch to Fire Island to PBR and all the ones I between. Great choices for sure.
The butcher shop really hit it out of the park. They have meats I’ve never even heard of. Everything is ordered to your liking and if you have a question about how to cook something they give you great tips. Imagine a real deal specially butcher shop plucked from Italy and plopped down right here.
The seafood section. I just don’t even know where to begin honestly. They have the best selection I’ve ever seen! Fresh eels, huge huge huge shrimp, fresh cut fish, the biggest lobster claws I’ve ever seen in my entire life. The last one I bought was around 3 pounds… just the claw!!! Now like I also they offer 3 types of hot seafood soup on the daily. Shrimp and sausage gumbo, clam chowders, seafood bisque, all extremely good.
Now something that I really appreciate about this store is they understand your needs. I mean how are you supposed to wait all the way until your freakin home to eat! I couldn’t! So in light of that they have a really nice seating area right beyond the check out. It’s clean, they offer utensils and tables for 2 – 4 people. You can sit your behind down and enjoy that triple scoop cup of gelato, that delicious smelling seafood chowder or those 4 grandma slices that you told the pizza dude you were takin back for girlfriend (have no shame!)
I would completely recommend checking this place out even if it’s out of your way. I promise you that you have never seen a supermarket like this one!

They have great food here honestly, but it’s pretty expensive. It’s not nearly as bad as whole foods but certainly more expansive than meat farms or shop rite. That being said, they have the best cheese, and they have any Italian specialty food you could ever want.

I really wish I could give them 3.5 stars. Three seems to little while 4 is too much. Here are some of my experiences on different areas of the store:
Pizza:
Worst Sicilian pie EVER! Uncle G’s is in my rotation of 3 favorite pizza places in the area. I usually get their grandma (very good) or Neapolitan pies (pretty good), but tonight felt like Sicilian. Will never get it again from here. Half the pie had HUGE bubbles (supposed to poke the crust during baking to avoid bubbles) making the cheese slide off leaving doughy, cheeseless slices and the cheese from those slices melted off ran down the bubble mountains to the other slices so the other half of the pie had too much cheese (never in my life did I think I’d ever say something had too much cheese but it’s true). Very disappointing.
Bakery:
So far everything I’ve gotten here has been bad. Cheesecake — not great. Pies — hard, unripe fruit with apple core and seeds. Danish — dry with only a few nuts sprinkled sparsely on top. The only thing I thought was ok is the cheese Danish with fruit in the refrigerated section (if you want to spend $ 12). I can’t remember other things I’ve bought from the bakery over the years but nothing has been outstanding or memorable. Oh – the muffins are pretty good.
Grocery/​produce:
Produce is fresh and I’m able to find speciality items I can’t find elsewhere so that area gets 4 – 5 stars. Same with general grocery items and spices.
Of course I will go back because it’s nearby but will stick to the things they get right.

This place is pricey but the paper thin breaded chicken cutlets are worth every penny! Love the bakery section too, so much selection!

Normally I wouldn’t review a grocery store on here, but this place is so incredible, I couldn’t resist. First of all, when I left all I could say to my mother was that I felt like I had just been hit in the face with the experience of this place and it felt sooooo good!
They have everything! Every Italian dish you could think of, elaborate cakes and cookies, seafood heaven and more! Best yet, everything is freshly made! If I hadn’t started eating healthy and changed my lifestyle, I probably would have went crazy in this place. They have everything!
The only downside is you will pay the price. Nothing here is cheap. Maybe, I’m getting old but I get excited by elaborate grocery stores nowadays and this one is up there as one of the best I have ever been to!

I remember my pre-​teen years and going to the local card store. it was one of our favorite places to go. They had the hot car magazines that we browsed through longingly, a turnstile with the newest 45’s, and a nickel and dime candy counter that had to be 20 feet long. With a couple of bucks I could get for raking Ms. Shultzs’ lawn I could put myself into a candy coma. There were so many choices and everything looked so good. Sometimes I would stand there for what had to be hours just looking and wondering what I should spend my money on. I would pick up one appetizing sugar nugget, Now and Laters for example, but soon put that down for three Bit o’ Honey pieces, which could be one upped by a handful of Jolly Ranchers.
If you nostalgically recall this feeling you’ll want to head to Uncle Giuseppe’s. Today was my first time in here and I picked out 30 things I wanted to buy. I was that kid again with my mind racing and just so able to decide knowing that I couldn’t take it all right now.
I started by the Deli and saw so many brilliant Salamis I was immediately giddy, seeing the strands hanging to dry out was a visual joy you just won’t get in the other places. I wander one row over and I find homemade shepherds pies, in 10″ and 5″ pans. I never make this at home since I am the only fan in the house, but a 5″ pie could be consumes in one night with no waste. I’ll stop back here on the way out.
Then towards the specialty cheese section (not specialty as in white cheddar versus yellow). There were at least four types of blue cheese including Stilton. Behind the counter a cheese «bucher» is cubing some more cheese to fill into containers and put on the shelf. I have some blue cheese still st home, I think. Not sure if I finished it or not. Maybe I should pick a wedge just be sure. Can’t decide which variety, I’ll come back.
Walking to the back of the store I run into the meat section. Wonderful pork loins thick cuts of prime beef and Pork Belly. I have a bacon project that I need to get going but my local butcher doesn’t stock pork belly. I have to order a day in advance. But here it is ready to be dry cured by me immediately. Put a pin in this.
Six feet away were fresh prepared fish dishes. I’m more of a fish purist. Plain fish, any kind, with a little lemon is all I need so these were over the top for me. But they had to have 10 – 12 selections with all types of preparations.
Over to the bakery. I start to vibrate. Cheesecake, crumb cakes all versions of pies. Mini Tiramisu, and massive cupcakes, a black and white cookie the size of your head. Chocolate crumb cake as thick and heavy as 2″ plate steel.
OK time to wrap this puppy up. The family is waiting for me. Even as a young child I knew eventually I had to make my decisions and be home before dark. I grab the cookie and the Crumb cake and head back for that shepherds pie. But I pass the candy section. I see one foot tall chocolate toy soldiers, and in case that’s to much there are some six inchers ready to stand in. Lots of chocolate and things coated in chocolate, or stuffed, or drizzled with chocolate. Fruit slices, wonderful fruit slices, all of the benefits of candy with an endorsement by the FDA (hey it’s fruit right??). Make a note to come back to this section after a fasting blood sugar test.
I head back to shepherds pie aisle trying to keep my head down. Too many distractions. Crap how did I wind up in the Stromboli aisle? Who the heck has enough Stromboli for a whole aisle? Sausage and peppers, chicken, meatball and broccoli rabe all over the place. It’s dizzying.
I get to the right Aisle reach up blindly to grab the pie and race to the register. The cashier asks did you find everything? Yes, everything… where’s my inhaler…

Uncle g’s is a hit or miss place when it comes to quality, price and appeal. I find the deli crew often tears up the cold cuts and likes to stick a ham on the same slicer where they just had bloody roast beef on but if you get the right guy you’ll get some good cuts. I agree with a poster about the quality of their sausage which isn’t all that. I do like their selection of Italian goods especially the fresh ravioli but the bakery aside from the fresh made donuts and bread is not great. They have a nice selection of produce that I enjoy but it’s pricey. I will continue to go to uncle g’s but mostly for sale items and Italian goods

On The day that I bought the horrible sausage, my daughter who was with me was delighted to find their huge assortment of cheeses and bought 4 – 5 different kinds. The good news is that they tasted good and the bad news was that they all went bad and moldy within a few days.
I may go back to this disaster of a store, but only to enjoy the visual delight, not to actually buy any of their overpriced poor quality food!

Where do I start… From the fresh baked goods to great deli selections, fantastic freshly made pasta, mouth watering seafood to incredible cheese selections… I can spend all day here. The seafood salad is a favorite of mine loaded with fresh squid, octopus, shrimp and fresh vegetables put together with a nice light dressing, a meal in itself. I got lost in the cheese section before finding my way back to the fresh pasta section where I found a nice lobster stuffed ravioli to put in my shopping cart along with some freshly baked French bread and a very nice vodka sauce to top things off. Beautiful produce and many unique condiments as well.
Overall, amazing selection of Italian food, deli items, baked goods and seafood. There’s no reason to shop anywhere else.

As soon as I stepped through the automatic doors of Uncle Giuseppe’s, I knew I was in grave danger. It was 7pm-​ish, the last thing I had eaten was a terrible hospital cafeteria soup at noon. On my first visit, I had to really keep myself from buying and eating everything. I’m not from around here, and I know this is a chain… But still, I love this place and they deserve a review.
Ten Reasons why Uncle Giuseppe is the best uncle ever:
1. He has pizza ready when you walk in. What a guy! You don’t even have to be hungry but it’s hard to resist a fresh slice. Grab a slice, take a stroll around.
2. He is quite the gregarious host with his free samples. Cousin Costco ain’t got nothing on Uncle Giuseppe. There are free samples everywhere — cheese, meats, desserts, pastries. If Uncle Giuseppe has it, he wants you to try it.
3. He seems to be BFFs with the best farmers. Perhaps the track lighting in combination with the cheesy fake flaming torches on the Pantheon-​resembling ruins on the ceiling, has a magical way of illuminating the food with perfectly-​colored freshness. But who knew tomatoes could look so red and juicy in the dead of Long Island winter? Great selection of fresh produce that trumps Stop ‘n shop even on a bad day.
4. He has Grandma Giuseppe busy at work stocking the homemade pasta section in the back right corner. What a great assortment of ravioli, gnocchi, and various pasta. I’ve given up on making my own gnocchi when perfect tasting gnocchi is so readily available.
5. He fries seafood like it’s nobody’s business. If you’re craving fried anything from the sea, Uncle Giuseppe has it ready for you to take it to go.
6. He wants you to take the day off and still have a good home-​cooked meal. Besides all the cured meats you can get your hands on, his deli counter has great pasta salads, piles of homemade meatballs, eggplant parm, lasagna. You can have a delicious Italian homemade food from your microwave.
7. He is watching out for your health. Uncle Giuseppe doesn’t want you eating regular peanut butter with all the fats and preservatives. He has an organic peanut butter and almond butter machine just for you (near cheese shop). Yum!
8. Uncle Giuseppe cares about your bone density and wants to make sure you have enough calcium, thus he created a massive cheese shop heaven. Not just limited to Italian formaggio, there’s a fantastic selection of French formage, Spanish queso and even German käse (yeah I had to look that up.).
9. He also wants you to live a little and savor in some delectable olives (in moderation, of course). His olive section is outta control. I’d eat more if I wasn’t so scared of hypertension.
10. The real highlight of this store though is the super-​friendly and helpful staff. I feel like Uncle Giuseppe must have some sort of pep-​talk with everyone every day. For example, Giovanni the cheese guy always is willing to help pick out cheese and he has a great palate for stinky and sharp cheese. The cashiers wait for you at the end of their lines to usher you through.
The only downside is the sad wine section, literally a small rack of sangria and maybe 3 – 4 reds and whites to choose from. Really disappointing, but luckily there’s a wine/​liquor shop a couple doors down.
I used to say that I need to live by Trader Joe to survive, but I’m beginning to think Uncle Giuseppe is my new go-​to grocer!

Where do I begin? The fresh, delicious pizza that welcomes you as you walk in the front door? The homemade pasta, sauces, sausage, cheese, and bakery items? A seafood department with both raw items to prepare yourself as well as complete meals packaged and ready to go?
I don’t think any Unilocal review can do Uncle Giuseppe’s justice. When it comes to this specialty food superstore seeing is believing. The best way of describing it is to say if Whole Foods and Fairway had an affair, Uncle Giuseppe’s would be their love child.
I begin every trip to Uncle Giuseppes’s the same way. I tell myself, «I’m going in for one thing» or «I have a small list and I’m sticking to it.» Needless to say I end up walking out two hours later, in a haze with an overflowing grocery cart and a $ 200+ bill. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining, that’s just what Uncle Giuseppes’s does to you.
Complete with a full butcher, including marinated meats, already prepared burgers (beef, chicken and turkey,) kabobs, in house prepared sausage and more, this is your one stop shop for preparing for your summer barbeque’s to holiday meals.
The deli is complete with rows and rows of salads (lobster, pasta, potato, chicken,) sides and specialty prepared items (rice balls, fried zucchini, fried ravioli.)
I could go on and on about their fresh bakery items, expansive seafood department, imported oils, vinegars and other hard to find imported treats. I could carry on about their gelato, handmade candy, fresh produce and cheese departments. To experience this king in a world of grocery store commoners, stop reading the Unilocal reviews and go experience Uncle Giuseppe’s for yourself!

I’ve always been a fan of Uncle Giuseppe’s which really bring out the Italian & Sicilian in me. I’m Indian, and believe me, I’ve got plenty of Italian-​ness and Sicilian-​ness as the next Christian, Vito, Mario, Luigi and/​or Giovanni. I love me some pasta, gelato, angel hair a la vodka, prosciutto, fresh mozz, basil mmmmmmm I could go on and on and on…
The new Port Jefferson Station location is a convenient stop on my way home from my mornings at work and is laid out quite well, similar to the other Uncle Giuseppe stores — copying the layout of most Whole Foods stores. The layout of the WF stores has proven to be effective in an industry that commands a very SMALL profit margin… typically 2−3%.
They still have the best fresh mozzerella that I’ve had, served WARM with the guy behind the window making it/​hand kneading it front of you. They have an amazing selection of meats, prepared foods, seafood, produce and general foods… ooooo and the bakery. Yes.
I’m still a Whole Foods junkie which I will patron 80−85% of the time with Uncle G’s and Stop n Shop being the other 10% and Costco being the last 5%.
Their Grand Opening was on 6÷30÷2010 so it’s PACKED like a sardine can… especially right now as Uncle G’s is the newest thing since sliced bread in the Port Jefferson area.
It receives a solid 4 stars as it still IMHO cannot beat WF at produce, cheeses, bread and the open/​hot/​prepared foods area. It does however, beat WF at Italian specialties and fresh mozz cheese. Items that you would think, an Italian marketplace would win out on, and Uncle G’s does.
