History

Established in 1986.

Previously managed by the U.S. Coast Guard, the light station came under the stewardship of the Point Arena Lighthouse Keepers. After fourteen years of dutiful management the Keepers became owners of the property and continue to maintain the light station via the non-profit. The lighthouse is a «working» lighthouse featuring a small beacon at the top of the tower. The 1908 Fresnel Lens is on display in the Fog Signal Building museum. The 1908 tower was the first reinforced concrete lighthouse in the U.S. and replaced the 1870 100′ brick and mortar tower which was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. The original staircase from the 1870 tower is still in use in the present tower.
