The Original Pancake House

After waiting over 90 minutes we were seated. Ordered our drinks. Noticed all items are made from peanut oil. We had someone in our party with an allergy. The waitress refused to talk to us. A manager came over 30 min later and said we could order only cereal. We were still charged 9.92 for drinks that we never drank or had no refills of. Worst place ever.

This place is amazing! I can see why there is such a long wait. It had some of the best pancakes that I have ever had in my life. There wasn’t anything that my party didn’t like. The portions were good sized too. I also liked that you have the option to get smaller portions if you like too. I feel like at most places you always get too much food so I really like this!
Tip: Call ahead if you have 6 or more. If you have less than 6, use the No Wait app to put your name in to help skip the line! It knocked off over 20 minutes off of our wait time.

I wasn’t overly impressed with my last visit to OPH in Roseville a year or so ago. I got dragged into going to this one in Plymouth this past weekend when I wasn’t consulted on a breakfast outing (those that know me know this is about as close to a deadly mistake as a human can make). Needless to say, wasn’t overly impressed yet again.
Very brief wait, we called ahead to get our name on the list to shorten the wait time.
I decide to give the apple pancake special thing another shot after the last time I had it, it fell vastly short of expectations. Also ordered a side of sausage because I’m a carnivore after all. Girlfriend ordered up a ham/​eggs/​pancake thing and a our guest ordered up pancake/​eggs/​sausage dish.
Food came out relatively fast given how busy it was. The apple cake definitely was better. I’ll give it that. It’s not nearly as good as Good Day Café’s apple monster, but, it was better than the lifeless «what the F» one I got last time. Solid puff to this one, good caramel-​sugar glaze over it, and a solid cinnamon backdrop to go with the sour-​tarty apples. Sausage was just there, flavorless as I’d expected it would be. The ham I got from Ashley wasn’t even that good. Smothering it around in the syrupy-​apple mess on my plate helped add flavor.
I wasn’t impressed with her chocolate chip-​banana cakes either. By her own account, they were a «meh.» We’ve definitely had better ones as we went through the metro and destroyed stacks of cakes.
Service left a little to be desired when none of our waters could be refilled throughout the entire meal. Yet, my coffee was refilled… go figure.
All in all, a step above Perkins, but not a second step above to land in my «better than OK» area.

Came to this location because the wait at the maple grove location was 2.5 hours on a Sunday morning and this one was only an hour. I probably won’t come back because they don’t have the signature OPH coffee mugs that adds a little something special to the experience. I’m a sucker for a cute coffee mug. And they don’t have hash browns, just over salted home fries. My pancakes with an extra side of whipped cream was good as always!

great place. whatever you do get a large orange juice and a side of bacon with your choice of pancakes. 30 – 40 minute wait but food and service is well worth it

If I could, I would give this place an 10 out of 5! I LOVE OPH. I have ever since I was a little girl. My family and I made it our job to go every Christmas, and I would have to beg my parents to take us on a regular day.
My favorite, like so many others, are the insanely delicious pancakes. I have yet to come by another place (even my own home) that beats Original Pancake House cakes. They come out warm and fluffy with a drop of butter and any topping you put on them only makes them better. Chocolate chip, banana, nuts. The pancakes are amazing and when you pour that warm maple syrup… FORGET ABOUT IT! The heavenly taste that comes from the Original Pancake House syrup-​pancake pairing is actually perfect. And do not be afraid to put that syrup on everything! It’s that good.
Another love of mine that I encourage everyone to try is the hot chocolate. Original Pancake house doesn’t just give you a mug with hot water, a swiss miss packet, and a small amount of whip cream. OH NO. They give you a small pitcher of hot chocolate with a heaping pile of whip ON THE SIDE and an empty mug (BTW: the pitcher gives you at least 2 – 3 glasses of hot chocolate) all for a very nice price.
The wait can be long, Like really long, but don’t go to Original Pancake House by yourself! That is just kinda sad, and it takes some of the magic away from your experience if you don’t have someone to share your amazing meal with. Stop going to Perkins or IHOP for breakfast. Save them for your 2am munchies. The OPH wait is worth it, I promise!!!

First and foremost: Absolutely outstanding service. They are the model for casual dining service.
The first time I arrived I was working nights and showed up about 10 minutes before they actually opened. The manager welcomed me in as it was dead winter outside and offered me to sit and have a cup of coffee while the kitchen finished opening. He was very nice, offered me a newspaper and even offered to take my order for quick prep once the place actually opened.
I ordered the breakfast burrito and it arrived within 10 minutes of ordering, hot, fresh and prepared well. The server was there spot on to keep my coffee hot and full and was very pleasant throughout the meal.
During the meal I received a call that required me to leave ASAP. The server was readily available and even offered to box up the rest of my meal while he got my check. He was back within moments and even offered to settle the bill at the desk so I could leave quicker.
Any servers looking for advice on how to get better tips and serve guests better should pay this place a visit. I have fairly low expectations for service at casual dining places, but this place had me feeling like a valued guest who’d been there for ages.

Not giving this place a 4 or 5 star review simply because there was too many people ahead of you and you had to wait, isn’t fair, in my humble opinion. This is why you call ahead, folks.
I’ve eaten here twice. Both times the service, for a breakfast joint, was superb. Both times the food was piping hot and my coffee never emptied. The pancakes are, honestly, the best I’ve ever had. The bacon is actual slabs. The omelette is the largest masterpiece of eggs and other goodies I’ve seen. I would highly recommend this restaurant. If your life is so hectic that 45 min is too long of a wait, then either call ahead or go during the week.

I absolutely love their Pumpkin pancakes and coconut pancakes! Brunch can get pretty busy, but they do take reservations, and can get you in pretty quickly if you call ahead.

With so many good independent places to find breakfast in the Minneapolis area, I’ve avoided the Original Pancake House. But on a Saturday morning trip to Home Depot, I found myself in need of some food after having only had a cup of coffee earlier. Unilocal didn’t reveal many breakfast places other than the Original Pancake, so we set our GPS to take us there.
Upon arriving I was surprised that it wasn’t overcrowded with an hour long wait. We waited perhaps ten minutes until the very friendly hostess led us to our booth.
Both my partner and I ordered omelettes with pancakes. After a few gulps of coffee our order arrived. Wow, these are nothing like Perkins omelettes! They are so large and so fluffy they were like nothing I had ever eaten. And the pancakes had a wonderful flavor that I haven’t had since I discovered Elmer’s Restaurant in Palm Springs (check them out if you ever come across one on the West coast).
So, I’m now an Original Pancake House convert! Bring on a tall stack!

I’ve been here a few times and the wait is usually pretty long. When I went last on Easter, there was no wait at all which was so surprising! I’m guessing that people like to make their reservations for Easter, and since The Original Pancake House doesn’t take reservations this is why they didn’t have a wait.
I’ve only ordered pancakes here and they are always really good and everything that I expected! I love the buttermilk and banana pancake (but the pineapple syrup that comes with the banana pancake is too sweet for me, so I just use regular maple). The food comes out pretty fast, too. It’s fresh, tasty and a big portion. I would definitely recommend trying this place if you love pancakes and don’t mind waiting a little longer to get seated!

Why is this place so popular? We’ve eaten there once out of the 3 times we’ve gone simply because I’m not willing to wait 45 minutes for a table at a breakfast diner.
We finally ate there a few weeks ago… and I was disappointed. The omelet was awful, the pancake wasn’t anything amazing, and the overpriced coffee tasted like gas station coffee. The breakfast potatoes were pretty tasty though.
I truly don’t understand the hype.

The food isn’t anything special, prices are quite high and the wait to eat is ~45 min on Saturday mornings. I’m not saying it is horrendous but there are other breakfast joints that are cheaper and no wait like OPH. I don’t mind waiting to eat, but not breakfast

The most quintessential Wayzata breakfast spot. You’ll mingle with the old and young. High school sports teams out for a post-​game breakfast together, seniors reading their morning paper. Old dark wood interior makes it feel like a cozy library.
The coffee is hot and plentiful. Try the hot chocolate too! They give you a big bowl of whip cream to stir in.
Pancakes of all varieties. By far the best I’ve ever had. And many choices of syrups – real syrups, not canned sugary garbage.
I recommend the buckwheat pancakes, the coconut pancakes and the Dutch Baby (order early, it takes a while)
The staff is so kind and accommodating. A real part of the community. Thanks for the memories!

I was around the area looking for some brunch and almost didn’t give this place a chance because I thought it was like IHOP. Even though this is a chain restaurant, you won’t taste it in their food. I’m actually giving 4 stars because the coffee is rubbish but the food is excellent, some things made from scratch and others being their own recipe. The specials of the day and their popular dishes are the way to go. The pancake batter is really fresh and not something you can reproduce at home.

I had a pretty good experience coming here with a friend. I didn’t experience a long wait at all just because we came when they weren’t busy at all. Service was fast and the people were extremely friendly. The coconut pancakes were pretty great, and the ½ portion was still quite large. We ordered a side of sausage links and bacon which was pretty much just like cafeteria food (reheated). I didn’t bother trying anything else just because it was my first time coming and of course I was going to order pancakes, which I assume is what they probably do best. It was just satisfying to have pancakes with a good friend and with good service. I definitely will be coming again!

Be prepared to wait a long time. Apparently the secret is call ahead, because when we put our name in, was told would be a 45 min wait — this means they won’t seat you for 45 minutes, despite flocks of call ahead folks going in front of you. When we finally sat down, the service was great, but the food was under seasoned and prices are a little high for breakfast. I had the crab cake Benedict which was a special, and it was just cakes, eggs and sauce. My hubby got the pancakes and said they were good.

Best breakfast I have had in a really long time. Food was incredible and service was great!
I am a coffee snob and I still loved the coffee, which is rare for a restaurant. The fresh squeezed OJ was so good! Don’t miss out on this place :)

I was a huge fan of this place growing up when it was located in downtown Wayzata and their quality of food followed them here. A great improvement from their former location is their ability to seat more people… specifically on a Saturday morning around 10:30am when I finally roll out of bed and make it over here. It’s nice to not have to wait more than an hour for breakfast.
Their pancakes are delicious and huge… seriously huge. Don’t try and get a full order of pancakes if you eat a normal amount of food. The half order will fill you up and satisfy your breakfast needs. My choice ⁹⁄₁₀ times is the chocolate chip pancakes that are made with chocolate batter. Seriously, it’s chocolate on chocolate on chocolate, but not too much chocolate. Chocolate.
Their omelets are good and are a solid choice. The coffee is just what you need in the morning and they give you fresh cream with it if you ask. I like this place and will continue to be a frequent customer.
