Honey and Mackie’s

My fiancé and I are both food industry professionals with formal culinary training, so we know a thing or two about food. We discovered Honey & Mackie’s last fall, and quickly became regulars. The ice cream has a phenomenal texture and while we can be discerning (or just picky) about flavors, we’ve never been disappointed with their selection. Somehow we’ve never tried their fries, but being well-​versed in authentic frites, they appear to be doing them right.
While the ice cream is phenomenal and the rest of the menu looks outstanding as well, what really makes the experience of going to Honey & Mackie’s is their staff. We’ve never been and not had a five-​star customer service experience. Being small business owners ourselves, we wonder how they find such great staff.
My only gripe is that they only accept cash tips and I never carry cash!

We live right down the street from Honey & Mackie’s and have been here probably 20 times since it opened a couple years ago. After taking our kids there today for a treat I realized that this has become our exclusive ice cream place in the area and I really owe them a great Unilocal review.
The ice cream here is homemade, with a rotating list of creative flavors that keeps it interesting every time we visit (have a pint of their black licorice in my freezer at home right now– really cool flavor). The ice cream is consistently high quality — definitely can taste that it’s made in house. We’ve had the fries a couple times as well and they’re nicely done too.
The décor inside is cute too, with pictures of customers on the wall, and an explanation of the nice story about how the shop was named after the owners’ kids. Definitely adds to the family friendly vibe.
I saw another reviewer compared this to some place in LA — ok so maybe it isn’t the best ice cream in the entire country, but I challenge you to find a better ice cream shop in the Minneapolis suburbs. Honey & Mackie’s is just a nice little place that does ice cream right, and we plan to keep coming back again and again.

Regular fries were really good – medium crisp and so flavorful that really no sauce was needed. Ice cream was good but had a few ice crystals here and there. Interior is decorated with cute graphic art.

Fun place that pairs ice cream with FRENCH FRIES. Their dipping sauces make even plain old fries interesting. A really good place to swing by on a trip through the west suburbs of the Twin Cities!

We drove out on a beautiful summer evening in Minnesota and tried out this ice cream stand. The scoops are colossal, so just order a single. Really a kiddie would have sufficed. I had strawberry shortcake which was great and my wife had butter pecan. Bothe re very good and we ejoyed them sitting outside on the sidewalk looking at the sunset. Very nice place to go.

Just went to Honey and Mackey’s for a cone. I always try the basic vanilla ice cream first. If the vanilla’s not good, I don’t bother going back. Honey and Mackey’s vanilla is very good, sweet with specks of vanilla bean. The consistency was just right: soft enough so you could lick (not bite) it, but not too soft so that it melts all over the place. They have lots of great selections to choose from. Next on my list to try is malted chocolate. Definitely will go back. (Pleasant staff, as well.)

Honey and Mackies is a cute and wonderfully original suburban ice cream joint. The ice cream is all made in house and the flavors are original. My wife and I both go to school in North Dakota but have family in the cities and every time we come down we make a point to go here. Try the salted caramel and peanut for something original or keep it simple with a vanilla scoop, it’s all delicious and definitely worth a go.

Ready to be overwhelmed with original flavor options? Honey and Mackey’s is a new ice cream and fry joint that offers a plethora of inventive flavors with a side of… fries. I tried the white chocolate cookies and cream (white chocolate base with Keebler fudge stripes as the cookie mix-​in) and mocha fudge almond. Both were quite good. The mocha had a great mix of bold coffee and sweet chocolate. It was the better of the two; however the large sized almonds were a but cumbersome for ice cream.
The fries were double fried and fresh. Perfect. The seasoning was tasty but a little too salty for my liking. One downside was the overpriced dipping sauces for the fries. Each dipping sauce was a buck. So trying multiple sauces will add up quickly.
Overall the staff was friendly and helpful. In exited to return to try some more flavors.

We just tried Honey and Mackie’s for the first time last night and this will be our family ice cream place going forward. What a fantastic addition to the Plymouth scene. Besides chain places all we have in our beautiful burb are frozen yogurt shops, that we all know, is not ice cream!
For the money, you get generous portions of everything. We thought our son’s cone was a double dip and the young man serving us said, «nope, that’s a single». He had the M&M and it was chocked full of chocolate goodness. I went with the cinnamon sugar pecan and boy, what a treat that was. My husband got the strawberry lemonade sorbet and it really tasted like a fresh squeezed strawberry lemonade. I asked how often the flavors change and they said typically one a day is switched out so be ready for lots of great flavors to enjoy.
We also had the french fries and they were FANTASTIC. Really, can you go wrong with fresh cut fries? They were seasoned and cooked to perfection. The dipping sauces were good too. We did the traditional nacho (which is the spicy version, yum) and the sriracha mayo. Both were as expected.
I do want to say one thing about the previous reviews commenting on the location. I saw multiple comments that it’s «in a strip mall» I want to ask these people where else would it be? Plymouth doesn’t offer lots of free standing locations at a reasonable rates.
In short, I applaud your newest ice cream addition and hope it’s around for years to come. I know our family will do its best to support it.

Decided to give them another chance last night. Tried the raspberry chocolate chip ice cream. It had exactly two chocolate chips in the whole thing. It wasn’t bad, but not super fantastic either. Still not all that impressed. Rating remains three stars.

This is a gem in the rough. The rough being a strip mall. Granted, they might step up their game a bit by locally sourcing and making sauces worthy of the delicious french fries, I have to say the fries were top notch on their own. Generous portions make up for the high priced, mid-​grade ingredients and the ice cream was quite good. They had lots of flavors, including an old extinct favorite of mine, butter brickle. The mango habanero was really cool and mango-​sweet with a little kick of habanero heat at the end that commanded one to take another bite. Staff was super friendly in a non-​fakey kind of way. Thanks for giving it a go in a tough crowd, this place is in the heart of overprivileged, entitled, and bored suburbia.

My family has been here several times. A great new addition to Plymouth. The M&M ice cream is chock full of m&ms and the salted Carmel is delicious. The ice cream is made by hand right at the store – truly unique. We love it!

French fries and ice cream… ice cream and French fries… sure, why not?
When I first heard about Honey & Mackie’s, it sounded interesting but I couldn’t quite figure out why they were trying the concept in a suburban strip mall in Plymouth. Sure: they say they want to offer an interesting option that doesn’t involve driving to Minneapolis, but I’ve seen a number of concepts fail using that same logic – the ultimate question will be whether locals will give it a go over the chain restaurant that reign supreme in suburbia.
So how is it?
Chili Cheese Fries: One size for $ 5.50 plus tax is a generous portion. There’s certainly enough chili and cheese to enjoy it on all the fries. The cheese is generic nacho cheese, the chili is your standard restaurant-​grade variety, with a light touch of heat, but nothing exceptional. The fries themselves were fresh but not among the best in the Twin Cities. Let me explain my own bias: I’m stuck comparing this to the incredible chili cheese fries at places like the Original Tommy’s or Chano’s, both in LA. I didn’t find anything I could really complain about, but nothing that would make me have it again.
They also had regular fries and a Frito Pie available (the latter is basically chili cheese Fritos). The regular fries had optional sauces for $ 1 each (ketchup is complimentary). The staff is very friendly.
The ice cream is made in-​house, it was above average. The gentleman behind the counter explained they get all the ingredients from the normal restaurant suppliers: Sysco, Sam’s Club, etc, so if you’re expecting some kind of gourmet ice cream using locally-​sourced ingredients, this isn’t the place. It’s closer to a Ben & Jerry’s but I have to admit I prefer the latter. The waffle cones were average at best. A double cost $ 5.75 with tax.
When I was there, in the one o’clock hour on a weekday, the clientele was exclusively moms with small kids and pre/​early teens on summer vacation. I was thinking about ice cream when the store filled with lots of boisterous kids (having a good time) and their haggard moms who seemed to be realizing that summer was only beginning – If I were to guess, that seems to the audience they’ll be getting in the long run.
As a concept, this seems like it would be a good fit either near a college or where high schoolers, college kids, and 20-​somethings congregate, e.g. next to a movie theater. Time will tell.
Honestly, I wouldn’t complain about going back with people who want to check it out, but I don’t think I will go again on my own, it’s just not compelling and if I want something interesting I’ll drive to Minneapolis.

I really hope this place does well because it is nice to support the local establishments.
I ran over there last night before it closed. The ice cream was good. I had the peanut butter banana. A lovely combination. We didn’t taste the fries or the frito pie. The other two items on the menu. This is an interesting concept but may be better suited on a college campus then the burbs. The staff seemed a bit disconnected, inexperienced and not sure what their responsiblities were. A little more training would help.
