Description

Specialties

Hospice of the East Bay provides compassionate end-of-life care to terminally ill patients, while offering emotional, spiritual, and grief support for the entire family. As a not-for-profit organization, we accept all medically qualified patients, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. Patients and family members are welcome to call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Telephone or in-person consultations are scheduled whenever needed. Our acclaimed in-patient facility, Bruns House, offers privacy and quiet that cannot be found in a hospital, combined with intensive around-the-clock care that cannot be achieved at home. We also offer free bereavement services to the entire community. Since 1977, we have served over 22,000 patients and their families.

History

Established in 1977.

The idea for Hospice of the East Bay was conceived in 1975, by three women who had heard about the English hospice approach to caring for terminally ill patients: managing pain and symptoms of illness while offering practical, emotional, and spiritual support to patients and their families. They gathered volunteer nurses, social workers, physicians, and chaplains to create a hospice in Contra Costa County. In 1977, Hospice of the East Bay’s first year of operation, we served one patient. Presently, in our 37th year of operation, we have provided care and comfort to over 22,000 terminally ill patients and their families.
