Specialties

Seaside Shotokan is a Traditional Japanese Shotokan style Karate-​do school. Our student base is predominantly professionals and families who choose to train in a Marital-​art for: discipline, health, strength, and self defense.

Most classes are appropriate for any level or age, from beginner to advanced, teenager to retiree.

We also offer various fitness classes including Stretch, Yoga, Dance, and Tai Chi.

History

Established in 1996.

Seaside Shotokan was founded in Playa del Rey by Sensei Penny A. Ringwood, 6th DAN.

The dojo started as an ITKF (International Karate Federation) affiliated school, and was afiliated with ITKF until 2001. Seaside has since operated as an independent dojo, adhereing to JKA/​ITKF training standards.

Meet the Manager

James O.

Manager

James Oates is a long time member of Seaside Shotokan, currently holding the rank of 2nd DAN. He began training with Sensei Penny Ringwood at the dojo in 2001.

Jim currently manages the dojo, and teaches Karate classes along with fellow senior students Tatiana Lesnanksy and Joe John McVey.

My husband and son have trained @ Seaside Shotokan for over 3 years, and they both love it. Although the founding Sensei recently passed away, the Dojo has not skipped a beat. Her immaculate training (and spirit) is apparent through her instructors. Seaside offers a variety of classes so you don’t have to go from studio to studio to fill your exercise needs! Seaside has a family feel, and all the instructors are invested in providing a safe and friendly environment for all ages.

I have been a member of the Karate Dojo side of Seaside for many years. Seaside offers much more than just Karate they also have yoga, tai chi and dance classes all offered in comfortable, friendly environment. Other nice thing is that you can just walk in the door, talk with the teacher and take a class – no contracts to sign, no pressure.
Seasides has a real neighborhood feel, nice people and a good workout no matter which class you choose.

My son and I have been members of Seaside Shotokan for over 3 years and we love it! There are people of all ages that train here, from small children to senior citizens. The instructors are patient, knowledgeable, and cater to the needs of all of the students. Yoga and stretch classes are also offered here. This is a great place to learn traditional karate and get into shape!

I trained here for seven years and recently returned. I learned from the best and made lifelong friends before taking a break to start a family. Several families have grown up training together in the dojo, and I plan to bring my kids in when they’re old enough. There’s been a recent change: The founding Sensei passed away, and the senior instructor took over. He’s a fantastic instructor – knowledgeable, patient, and adept at explanation and demonstration. It’s a great workout with a great group of people.

I would give zero stars if I could. This owner of this establishment is beyond rude. She thinks it’s a «waste of time» answering her customer’s questions. She thinks it appropriate to cancel classes AFTER people have already showed up if there are not enough people. Many attendees drive a distance in LA to get here and this is not professional. She writes rude and hostile e-​mails to those simply seeking answers and her negative attitude, lack of professionalism and unfounded arrogance should keep you away. Steer clear of their Zumba and yoga classes… totally a scam with a con-​artist running the group.

I started training at Seaside Shotokan back in 2004. Karate here is taught in more a more traditional Japanese style meaning that you won’t be leaning to beat up people in 6 weeks like some MMA gyms claim. It requires a lot of patience and commitment to master. However, the payoff is pretty satisfying both physically and mentally. If you have an interest in learning a martial art, I think this is a great place.

My children started their serious karate training here. I watched them grow and mature in just a few months. So, I started training there, too. As a beginner with no martial arts experience at all, I was nervous about trying it out, but soon learned that it was fun, challenging, healthy and exciting.
Sensei Ringwood is respectful, helpful and quite understanding. She the highest ranked female Karate Do, a former champion, and a world class teacher.
This isn’t the smash-​and-​bash stuff, it is true Karate with respect, physicality and diligence.

I went to Seaside Shotokan for their free introductory class. The place looks like a Traditional Japanese Training Hall, with polished pinewood floors and tall ceilings. The instructor, Sensei Penny, was very nice and articulate. It’s traditional Japanese Karate with an emphasis on perfecting the technique rather than brawling.
