Texas Home Cooking with made from scratch Chicken-​Fried Steak and Homemade Biscuits with Cream Gravy. One of a Kind, NOT One of a Chain. We are known for our large portions. All of our Puffy Omelets are made in Omelet Pans and heaped with ingredients. Many chain restaurants cook omelets on grill which make them thin and retain no moisture from eggs. Our menu has over 125 Entrees which gives the diner great variety. The menu is pretty evenly balanced with 60 Entrees for Breakfast and Lunch. Our experienced servers use a Teamwork approach to handle the crowds because we seat 280. Many of our friendly staff have been working 15+ years for us. Server will take your order tableside with PDA. Quickly the food comes up in the serving window, the first available person brings it out. We have drink persons who take your order and keep you refilled. Server will check back with you to make sure you are completely satisfied. Our managers and owner are available to visit with you.

History

Established in 1973.

Established in 1973 Poor Richard’s Café has been an institution in Plano for many years. In its early days it was known as Park Mall Restaurant. Back in the 70’s and 80’s Plano expanded rapidly. Building trades people and locals frequented the tiny café. Completely remodeled in 2000, we went from 160 seats to 280. In the last 3 years, we freshened the looks with new carpeting and updated look. For many years we were almost a man’s restaurant because of our large portions. Today we appeal to families, children and women because of our value, good food and friendliness. The menu has grown from the original 60 items to 125 entrees thanks to owner Richard’s desire to offer new exciting dishes. Richard took ownership in 1982 and changed the name shortly thereafter. Many of the customers have been coming in for 30 years. Today we have 2nd generation kids coming in with their children. And they still LOVE us.

He took over existing business in 1982. He is an ex High School English teacher who had previous restaurant experience and definitely a love for cooking. Many of the recipes are his creations. He believes in flavorful cooking. His concept with the restaurant is to give customers good value and large prortions along with friendly service. We try to meet our customers to make you feel comfortable. We want repeat customers. Our staff have been with us a long time. We have low turnover because they love their jobs and the customers. Richard is a proud Rotarian having served as President of Plano Sunrise Roary. We try to give back to the community with donations to Plano Christmas Cops since 1985, numerous Blood Drive, Flu Shot Clinic and for 8 years feeding almost 10,000 disadvantaged people.

One of our favorite places to go, especially when people are visiting from out of town and you want to show them a real down home southern breakfast. Everything is delicious. They often have a long line but it moves VERY quickly and the food and service is definitely worth the wait.

Pretty good little café. It was extremely busy, even for a Sunday afternoon, but the line moved fairly quick. The food was tasty and pretty affordable. My only qualms were the time from when we got in line to when we got our food (about 50 minutes for only 2 of us). And it would be nice if they were a little more lenient with substitutions.

One of my favorite places to pig out on southern comfort food! I’ve been coming back here for the past 4 years. I always go for the chicken fried steak whether it be the Texas Breakfast or the fried steak lunch, which comes with 2 veggie sides of your choice and a roll or cornbread.
I absolutely love the homey vibe, the portions are large and service is always super sweet and attentive.

The place is packed, which is a sign that they have good food. I had the chicken fried steak. It was good, not great. I had the smaller portion size, which was half the plate. They have an even larger size which hangs off the plate. Not sure how anyone puts that down lol. The jalapeño cornbread was the reason I have them a 3 and not a 4. It was dry, fell a part, and wasn’t the best. I will try them again. The volume of people tell me I may have gotten them on a day they didn’t have their A game on.

I had the Waffles, egg, and chicken. The food was home made, hot, fast, and fresh. The service was extremely friendly. The price was very reasonable. I loved the salute to our troops with all the different service flags. The next time I visit Plano I will definitely eating here! Perfect

FOOD: I highly recommend ordering the chicken fried steak with green beans and corn (there’s other sides you can order). It was HUGE and most importantly, delicious! There’s a great variety of options on the menu. All plates are huge and reasonably priced. There will be at least one item on the menu that satisfies your cravings.
SERVICE: The servers are attentive, quick and kind… the southern hospitality makes you feel welcomed and at home. The diner has a home-​y feeling that gives you a little taste of Texas. I highly recommend checking this place out if you’re in the area!

FOOD:
The menu is extensive, which guarentees that everyone will find something that they will enjoy. I like how they have the classic breakfast diner options, as well as a variety of healthy choices that are indicated in the menu. (They also have a lunch/​dinner menu available after 10:30!). I ordered the salsa eggs which consists of 2 poached eggs over slices of ham, sauteed spinach, and tomatoes along with a side of fruit. Although this was deemed a healthy choice, I was able to leave feeling full and satisfied! I believe it is priced at $ 8. I tried a piece of my friend’s gingerbread pancake and those were superb too!
SERVICE:
Great service. All the workers are accommodating and make you feel like they’re your own family. Make sure to tip them well for their great service.
ENVIRONMENT/​DECOR:
This was probably the only down side. It looks like a classic diner which is great, but I feel like it was a little too dim inside, which made me feel a little tired.
Overall, would come again if my friends were down!

I went to Poor Richard’s on a week day around 10:30, and it was not crowded at all. There were lots of menu choices at reasonable prices. I went there for breakfast and had French toast with eggs and sausage. I like my eggs more cooked than most people — I can’t stand any bit of wetness or runny yolks. I asked for the eggs scrambled well-​done, and they came out perfectly, a bit brown, just as I like them. The coffee was decent and they were very good about refilling my cup. The only thing I don’t understand is why French toast in Texas is not made with Texas toast — seems the thing to do to me!

I rate this place a 3.5. The food was great. Home style breakfast. Everything came out hot and fresh. The only reason why I would rate this a 3.5 is because of the service. I arrived here at 1:15, and they don’t close until 2:30. My waitress rushed me to order, delivered the food, put the bill at our table, told me to pay because she was waiting for me to pay so she could leave, then stood next to me watching while I signed the bill & tipped. It was very uncomfortable. Other than that the coffee was great & my breakfast was delicious.

YUM! What a classic, awesome diner. I kind of wish they were open for dinner, but perhaps its best that they aren’t!
Service is fast and friendly, waitress still calls you ‘hun’ kind of place. The line can get a bit long, but they move people through pretty quickly.
I’ve enjoyed almost everything I’ve had here. The cornbread has been dry each time I’ve gone, and the gravy isn’t the best I’ve had. Their home fries are usually awesome, but can be a bit inconsistent unfortunately.
Love this place, though.

Yummy! We were in Plano & found this on Unilocal.Great breakfast, extensive menu. I ordered the Heart healthy salsa breakfast, 2 poached eggs over sautéed spinach & lean ham. It comes w/​a fruit plate and I opted for the sautéed mushrooms, onions & green pepper. Very tasty! My SO ordered the shrimp & grits w/​2 eggs, also very good. We like the big comfy booths too. I highly recommend going to Poor Richard’s. No one would expect such a good restaurant that serves delicious breakfast/​brunch food, but this place is worth the visit.
I came in on a Thursday at noon and the place was packed when I entered. Surprisingly, the wait was no more than 5 minutes for a party of 2. Whenever you first enter, you get the feeling as if you are in a 1970s. It’s not a themed restaurant; it’s just a naturally older looking restaurant tucked in the complex.
Food was great! I was expecting normal brunch-​like food, but they really outdid themselves. Just for $ 9.99 was the famous dish, Big Tex. The chicken fried steak was literally 1.5x the size of my face. It also came with a potato side, egg side, and pancake side. We tried the gingerbread pancake, which was a bit sweet. Another dish the waitress recommended was chicken tenders and a waffle. Although it was just 4 tenders and one waffle, it was a perfect portion for me. The waffle was super soft and the chicken was perfectly crispy (not to soft and not to hard!).
Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. The only reason why I took off a star is because the waitress only visited us 4 times throughout the entire stay. Once for drinks, another for ordering, another for dropping off food, and the last for giving us the check. However, I can see that the employees are super kind and friendly to their regular customers.

Holy crap thinking about this breakfast makes me happy.
My friend and I both ordered Poor Richard’s Eggs ($ 7.99) from their extensive breakfast/​brunch menu. 3 eggs (I got scrambled and she got over easy) on seasoned home fries with melted cheddar, ham and onions with toast. Now they might not be the most photogenic plates but I swear I started salivating when they came. It’s a massive amount of food and I’ve never seen something so homey and diner-​like that just screams «Honey, you’ve had a tough morning. Now eat.» (And I was having a tough morning…)
Amazing deal and great service. Unlimited coffee after you order your first cup!
They leave your check with you right after you order/​get your food so you don’t have to flag down a waitress when you’re ready.
Side note: definitely the cheapest Eggs Benedict I’ve seen on a menu (also $ 7.99); I’m excited to try that next time and see how their hollandaise sauce measures up.

Cozy brunch spot near Plano! But will leave with greasy smell in hair and clothes.
FOOD: I got a healthy choice meal, the Salsa Eggs, which had 2 pouched eggs over ham and stir-​fried spinach and onion. The food tasted okay but I had a hard time eating it, since the yolk was flowing all over the plate and hard to scope up with a fork lol… I wish the dish came with bread or something so I didn’t have to waste the yolk.
SERVICE: You can definitely feel the Southern hospitality with the waitresses here. Our food also came by pretty fast.
SETTING: The place is as big as the cafeteria back in my high school so it can accommodate maybe more than 100 people? Everything is big in Texas, yah? :) Also the kitchen fries a lot of things and the door to the kitchen is open to the restaurant, so you may come out with a greasy smell.
PRICE: I paid $ 10 for my meal with tips/​tax, which I think is a reasonable brunch price.
OVERALL IMPRESSION: Pretty nice and cozy brunch place in Plano. Will definitely keep this place in mind for the future, but also making a mental note to wear something I don’t mind getting greasy smell with.

This place is hopping! We showed up at 11:30 on a Sunday morning and there wasn’t an empty seat in the place. It’s not small inside either! That could only mean one thing — that the experience would be great.
I wish they had little chairs for you to wait for a table, but they keep you in a line that wraps around to the front. There’s a sign that says not to leave and they’ll seat us in 10 to 15 minutes, which they did. They’re quick about getting you to order, which is hard when you’ve never been there and the menu is quite large. Everyone who works there is so friendly. Our waitress commented several times about how excited we looked.
My hot chocolate was rich (and doesn’t come with whipped cream, sadly), but hit the spot since it was so cold outside. I ordered the eggs with chopped ham and cheese. I’ve never seen that on a rest rubato menu before — just a ham steak and eggs usually — but this was my go to breakfast as a kid. I had to try a biscuit, because 1. It’s texas and 2. You could see the dual biscuit ovens from the seating area. It was so good. I just want a basket of those on the side next time. The home fries were outstanding. It’s something about the way they’re seasoned that makes them the best I’ve ever had.
We will definitely be back to try more menu items. The portions are huge for the price and the people who work there are kind and efficient.

You can’t beat the price and portion size here at Poor Richard’s Café. The menu is lengthy, but I like having a lot of options for breakfast. It’s a great place to come with a group of friends. The dining area is spacious and there’s hardly a wait (unless you come for Sunday brunch). The service is not the greatest, but it’s not bad either. It’s best not to come when you’re starving and your stomach is growling like a bear!
The pecan waffle breakfast is one of my favorite dishes. It’s not just any old plain waffle, it’s a pecan waffle! Add some maple syrup and you got a sweet and salty waffle! Another favorite of mine is the Poor Richard’s Egg Plus. This place is ENORMOUS and you will have leftovers. I think breakfast leftovers are the best (and pizza leftovers!) The only negative I would say is the coffee. I don’t expect to be great or anything, but it’s just not very pleasant.
