History

Established in 1911.

In 1911, the first Sewell car dealership began when Carl Sewell Sr. began selling Model T Fords in the back of a hardware store that doubled as a movie theater. Here, the Sewell family laid the foundation for their business: an attitude toward outstanding customer service.

When the Great Depression hit and Carl lost the money he had placed in three banks, the Sewells moved to West Texas in 1929. The business thrived, thanks to their focus on service. In 1941, Carl and his wife Louise moved to Dallas, bringing the family back to where it all began. Sewell Village Cadillac opened in 1957, becoming a flagship and starting a long tradition of service and luxury.

Carl Sr. passed away after selling his last Cadillac on May 5, 1972. His legacy passed on to his son, Carl Jr., who went on to open multiple dealerships in Dallas/Fort Worth, in San Antonio, and later in Houston.

Business Owner

Carl Sewell, a native Dallasite, received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Banking, Finance, and Economics from SMU in 1966.

After graduating and serving in the Army, Sewell joined the family automobile business in 1967. As a third generation automotive dealer, Sewell continued the legacy of leadership and principles of service that his family has embraced since its founding in 1911. With the current business involvement of his daughter, Jacquelin, and son, Carl, there are now four generations in the Sewell family business. Sewell is chairman of Sewell Automotive Companies, which includes 16 franchises.

As a national leader in the automotive industry and an innovator in establishing customer service standards, Sewell is often asked to share the keys to his success. His successful business philosophy is also set forth in the book he co-authored, Customers for Life, which has been printed in 17 languages and sold more than one million copies.
