History

Established in 1933.

It all started back in 1933 on a street corner in New York City, smack dab in the middle of the Great Depression. Nathan and Mary Glickberg opened a small fruit and vegetable stand. It was a true mom-and-pop endeavor.

Their son, Leo, later opened a fruit and vegetable store on 82^nd Street and Broadway. In 1954, they consolidated the family business at the flagship store at 74^th & Broadway. Fairway added groceries, meat, cheese, dairy products and frozen foods to the already famous produce displays. This successful Fairway concept has been fine-tuned over time. Fairway has achieved top market positions in fresh produce and key specialty food products (international cheeses, meats, baked goods and bean coffees), selling more per square foot than any other market in the country.

Under the leadership of Howie Glickberg, Nathan’s grandson, Fairway has grown into nine Food Markets and two Wine Stores with more than 4,000 employees and over 17 million loyal customers every year.

Talk about coincidence, my brother and I went there for the first time on the same day some time last year. Neither of us knew it until we talked a few days later about our experience there. He really enjoyed it especially the butcher counter where he told me I could buy lamb chops (my favorite).
I have gone back there a number of times. It is not my main supermarket only because it is a little out of the way for me, although for a smallish market they have a very wide selection of products. After much urging from the friend that originally brought me to Fairway, I had lunch at their hot buffet bar. It was all very good and again a nice and varied selection. I also like their vegetarian sushi which I have had several times.
I go especially for the gorgonzola with nuts and cranberries salad topping, another one of my faves.
If you plan to go for the first time, allow yourself plenty of time as there is a lot to see, taste and browse.

I throughly enjoy going to Fairway. Whenever I am in the area I try to stop by. Fresh vegetables, produce, meat, fish and bread. The store is laid out nicely making it easy to shop. A great selection of specialty items. Unfortunately they did not have the two things I was looking for: black bean pasta (delicious and gluten free) and Paleola, a gluten free granola (have only found it at Whole Foods).
Overall a good shopping experience.

Last week I went to the salad bar to get a chopped salad. I watched the girl make a bunch of salads, while wearing the same pair of gloves. I also watched her wipe things off the counter with those same gloves. Then when she made my salad, she stuck her hand WITH THE SAME GLOVES ON into the sunflower seeds and put them in my salad. I called and spoke to a male manager about it, he was very nice and assured me he would speak to them. Today I went back again, thinking this would not happen again. And sure enough, the same exact thing happened. I nicely asked the woman to make me a new salad because sticking her hands into the food like that is disgusting. She had an attitude about it as if I was wrong. So, I called again, spoke to a female manager. She wasn’t as nice… Basically the answer was «I’m sorry. Do you have a name? When you come in again, let us know if that happens and we will take care of it.» I 100% will not be going back there to get a salad. That is absolutely disgusting. Gloves should be changed after every customer. And their hands should never go into the food that people eat. If they do this right in front of our eyes, it really makes me wonder what they do behind the scenes. Gross.

There is no better supermarket on LI than Fairway. That’s more because LI supermarkets suck than anything else. This one took some getting used to because the layout is different from the other Fairways I’ve been to. But they have pretty much everything you need. Very clean by NY standards. The sushi tasted really fresh.

They have the same exact fruit and vegetables from the same Long Island supplier as whole foods, but are much cheaper. They have many organic products that are reasonably priced. Many many world foods and the market is easy to navigate. Try it out if you want healthy food, but are sick of overpaying for it. I can always find what I need here and highly recommend it.

I love love love Fairway Market because I can get things I enjoy immediately without having to special order online. Things like caviar & smoked Sable, & Oyster Mushrooms. Oh yeah Orange Glazed Duck in the hot rotisserie section. And don’t get me started on the olive bar. I have to take an extra blood pressure pill after I leave this place. But it’s all well worth it. Yes you’re gonna pay but you’re getting quality in obscure items that I just love.

Best market around, if you have money. They have everything here but amazingly fresh food is expensive. I go here for special occasions as you can’t beat their meat and seafood department. They always have free samples on Sundays which is nice so you can try before you buy. Cold cut section is amazing too. Only reason didn’t get five stars is its so overcrowded with people they should have made the store bigger

I was pleased to find this excellent grocery store not too far away from where I usually stay when I visit Long Island. Other grocery stores are fine, but too bland and quality is so-so. Not so (!) with Fairway. They have a great variety of fresh food/produce/deli/prepared foods. They also have an excellent selection of nuts (nutty, eh?) along with a decent craft brew aisle.
I like to pick up items instead of eating the usual fast food fare when traveling. It’s healthier and tastier. Fairway makes it easy by prepping a bunch of options or having the ingredients deliciously awaiting.
It’s also easy to park there.

I don’t need to be extremely wealthy in this life… I just want to be rich enough that Fairway Market is my «go-to» supermarket on a weekly basis! Seriously, this is the most amazing market ever. The store is HUGE, very clean, and so neatly organized. All of the foods are placed into sections and are easy to find. There is an entire cheese section (what I imagine heaven to look like), meat section, alcohol section, coffee section, pickle section, MAKE YOUR OWN PEANUT/ALMOND/ETC. BUTTER SECTION, and everything else you can imagine. The smells of this store are overwhelmingly delicious. I came in here for two items and wound up browsing for an hour. I’ll talk about the cheese section since I spent most of my time there. SO many different types of cheeses and lots of samples. The lemon ricotta is outrageously addicting. I also tried an aged cheddar which was strong in taste, but phenomenal. The samples made me purchase entire blocks! I knew these were items I wouldn’t find elsewhere, so I splurged! There were two men working the counter who were extremely helpful and sweet. There is fresh mozzarella made every day and tastes pretty delicious, not the best I’ve had, but definitely comes in a close second. Most, if not all, of the products in this store seem to be organic or all natural. There are a lot of salads, antipastos, and fresh food for sale within the store. I think the biggest highlight of this store for me is the selection and the organization. I feel that many items offered here are not available for purchase in regular supermarkets. The organization is amazing, I loved how everything is put into its own section and makes everything easy to find. There is so much variety within each section. My only complaint is the price. I could never afford to do a full food shopping here! Three blocks of cheese, a bag of shrimp, and scallions cost me $ 60! I know that cheese and shrimp tend to be expensive, but I think this was way overpriced. I would come back here for specialty items that I cannot find anywhere else, or if I were hosting a dinner party or something of that sort.

If you haven’t had the Fairway experience, I say go now! Best grocery store around, kickass fresh produce, good prices. Skip Whole Foods– get the same products for way less. Oh, and I love their store brand too.

From the moment you enter the store you can see and smell the filth… starting with the dirty shopping cart
Asparagus on display outside. .dry and wilting… inside the selection is even worse. The display is filthy… dirty water inside a foil pan on the stand.
Walking a few feet to purchase some strawberries …the first 3 packages my wife picked up and moldy berries inside…
Over to the bag salads… no arugula but plenty of outdated bag salad.
Apple displays piled as high as can be… but look at the filth inside the display stand or on the floor underneath
Enough…we left our wagon and walked out… drove a few miles down the road to whole foods… a few dollars more for top quality merchandise without the added filth.
We will not be returning to fairway

Lunch time comes and you don’t know what you want, no problem. The café in Fairway always has a nice selection of freshly prepared food, sandwiches, wraps, panini and fresh sushi. Seriously, there is a sushi chef on location. Everything is delicious and it’s easy to eat healthy if you want. All sandwiches, wraps and panini come with a side salad which is basically just some mixed greens thrown on your plate with a few cherry tomatoes.
My personal favorite is the fresh store made roast beef sandwich. They slice a fresh bakery roll in half and dip each side in au jus before piling high fresh rare roast beef. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
Just a tip, it does get busy and they sometimes run out of their speciality wraps and panini, so if that’s what you are looking for, get there early.

I’ve been a loyal customer of Plainview Fairway for 7+ years, but not anymore. Alas, this Fairway has been changing for worse.
I bought Italian meatballs from the butcher today, put them in the oven, and soon later the stench of rotten meat filled the kitchen. My meatball dinner is in the garbage can outside. So I’m done with their butcher department.
I no longer buy their seafood either, after they sold me spoiled cooked shrimp a couple of months ago. I didn’t know it was spoiled until I opened the bag right before dinner — the smell was nauseating. That was after they raised the seafood prices a lot.
I used to be impressed by the freshness of their Deli salads. Today the salads looked as if they spent a day under the sun.
I don’t know if it’s local management or the corporate office that makes them compromise on quality and freshness, but the trend is obvious: they keep store-made food on much longer than before, perhaps for days and weeks past the healthy limits.
So from now on, I will only buy non-perishable products from them such as olive oil or with expiration date printed on the packaging — canned food, milk, eggs, etc. And coffee is still good, but that’s about all.

I absolutely love Fairway. It is honestly my favorite grocery store. Not only are there products found at this store that can’t be found anywhere else, but the in-house store-made foods, salsas, sauces, etc are superb. Their salsa is seriously the best I have ever had in my life. In fact, I brought it to my Monday Professional Development meeting for my fellow teachers to share with me, and they told me that the next time I go to Fairway, I have to pick it up for all of them since they live in Queens and Brooklyn. I pair it with the Xochitl tortilla chips which are light, crispy, and extremely flavorful and they are the perfect snack, addicting yet healthy. I also have tried a few of the soups and the basil pesto sauce made by Fairway and they are all amazing. I love the variety of oils, vinegars, coffees, and meats found at Fairway and the organic fruits and vegetables are superb. If you are looking for an amazing shopping experience when going for groceries, definitely come here!

Horrible… I bought. No salt turkey great at deli on sunday… Opened it Tuesday to make lunch or was rancid…
Brought it back weds… Only store credit… I paid cash… Should get cash…
They didn’t even open it to smell it… Think they know?

The last time I reviewed Fairway I asked for a response from management. It took three months. Perhaps my response this time will be quicker.
I am a loyal customer and have advocated this store since they came to Long Island. But, all good things must come to an end.
I am at the butcher department looking for dinner. I choose a steak and ask the butcher to trim it. I tell him to weigh it first so that I am not getting something for nothing. He does and packages it. I look at the label — $ 10.99 per pound. Not bad, but the sign in the case says the steak is $ 8.99.
I ask for an adjustment and am told «no, the sign is wrong, the computer is right». He calls for someone and walks away leaving me alone at the counter. A few minutes later someone approaches me to find out what’s happening. He looks at the sign and then finds the butcher. «The customer is correct, please change the label.» «No, I can’t do that and you’re not my boss». I leave the two of them fighting and buy a beautiful steak at my local store.
The point you ask? When Fairway opened in Plainview the butchers were old professionals who knew their product and knew how to treat their customers. Today the senior butcher is twelve years old with a solid two weeks of experience.
It appears that Fairway is more concerned about expansion then on pleasing their customer base. They want to be another Waldbaums or A&P and we know what happened to them… Three stars is now generous. Hopefully they can get their act together again, but for now I am shopping elsewhere.

Clean, well-managed store with a ton of products in the organic, fair trade, off-label category. Have tried many of their pasta salads and raw bar items to satisfaction. Large selection of nuts and bulk foods. Give it a try.

This is not my favorite Fairway, but it is mine.
The clientele at this location are the kind of people you might want to avoid at all cost. They stand in the middle of the isle, leave their cart in another part and block the isle for everyone else.
Fairway is an amazing grocery. The quality of their meats and cheeses are by fair the best outside of a fancy meat and cheese shop. My favorite is their organic ground turkey. There is a cheese called Honeybell Goat Gouda that would make it worth it to be sick if you are Lactose Intolerant. I should know.
Fairway always has the best prices on produce but the cheese and meats are expensive.
They also have an entire gluten free section and their staff can easily help you find what you are looking for when it is very particular.
Go on a weekend and take advantage of the many sample tables. Yum.

Very good store with an excellent selection of items on every department. Huge fan of the beer section, found my favorite German hefeweizen beers too. This place is definitely worth checking out.
