WDVE 102.5 FM

Eh, Jim Krenn’s a jagoff.

I used to never stray too far from 102.5 in my 20’s and 30’s, after all, classic rock is a great format. That is unless you’re the music director of ‘DVE.
If the dj says «coming up next Pink Floyd» you can bet the house it will be comfortably numb, another brick in the wall, or money. ZZTop? Legs, sharp dressed man, or, Le Grange. Let’s try one more, Led Zepplin, Stairway to Heaven, immigrant song, and Rock and Roll.
‘DVE, there are sooooo many great classic rock songs out there but you consistently play the same songs over and over. So, I switched over to WYEP and never came back. Oh, wait, I will listen when I can’t watch the Steelers on the tube. I’m only giving them two stars and that’s because the are the home of the Six Time Super Bowl Champions!

Back in the early 90s, when I started seriously listening to the radio, this was THE station to listen to. The ‘DVE Morning Show with Scott Paulson and Jim Krenn was hilarious. But beyond that, WDVE had a great music format. It was new and classic rock.
WDVE gave Pittsburgh it’s first taste of such bands as Nirvana, Cracker, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Counting Crows, the Gin Blossoms, etc. The station used to have a show on Wednesday nights focusing solely on new music, stuff that was under the radar. Plus WDVE would still give you the standard Classic Rock acts like Journey, Styx, Bad Company, etc.
Somewhere along the lines, WDVE dumped the new rock for the most part and today appears to be solely focusing on «Classic Rock», which to me is the least innovative format a station can do – glorified oldies. There’s nothing wrong with «Classic Rock» artists, but relying on them means you don’t have to add anything new.
