This is one of the«three sister» bridges that span across the Allegheny River. On a sunny day you can get great views of PNC park in one direction or of the Convention Center in the other directions. Not for me however, Fighting rain and wind I could barely get too far on this bridge for good pictures. This bridge was formerly known as the 9th St bridge but is now called the Rachel Carson bridge. There were times in the summer when I went downtown to catch a show a park near this bridge and would see some sort of event going on it. I thought to myself that I surely don’t want to be caught up in this jam of people let alone get out of it! While it is true this bridge is in dire need of repair the city has enough construction problems going on that it can wait. It comes in handy if you are coming in from the north side and want to go towards the Convention Center or the theater district.

Who shuts down a bridge for a festival? Pittsburgh does. That’s why I love Pittsburgh, they use all their resources. I mean, not to sound redundant, Pittsburgh has 446 bridges, why not utilize them the best way you can? This is not the only bridge they have closed down in the past for festival use, it is just on a list of many other bridges used for the same purpose. Now, onto the bridge itself. Rachel Carson Bridge is part of the triad called the Three Sisters. All three of these bridges connect the Downtown area to the North Shore; 6th, 7th, and 9th Street bridges. Or better known as Roberto Clemente, Andy Warhol and Rachel Carson. Each of them painted in the iconic, and hotly debated on whether to change the color from, Aztec Gold. Each of them give you a great view of all things Pittsburgh. Rachel Carson is closest to the convention center and gives you are great vantage point for some great pictures. Even though this is a beautiful bridge, it is in need of some dire repairs. Which I hear we will be seeing these repairs in the near future. Along with the repairs, we will see a new coat of the Aztec Gold. Even though it does need repairs, it does not mean that this review receives a deduction in stars. Oh, yeah, this is my 900th review!

This is such a cool bridge. Of the three Sister Bridges, this one is the best, and slightly underrated by visitors. Andy and Roberto get all the attention. Do yourself a favor: walk another block and check out Rachel!

The Rachel Carson Bridge is formally the 9th street bridge, named in honor of the Springdale native. An ecologist, she penned the book Silent Spring, which proved the pesticide DDT was killing off wild life such as the Bald Eagle. The book led to the banning of that substance. This bridge is a self anchored suspension bridge that connects the downtown with the North Side. It crosses the Allegheny river.
