Specialties
We prepare most items from scratch on premises, from smoking and roasting meats right down to our desserts. As a nod to the former tenants, we take our time and do things right. At the bar, customers have the best of all worlds. With a focus on bourbons (30 and counting), we tip our hats to the «shot and a beer» crowds that inhabited these same seats in 1947. We also make hand-crafted cocktails, provide an ample selection of beer bottles and drafts, and have a wine selection that ranges from deep reds to sparkling whites. The Elbow Room had a great bar, and so do we.
History
Established in 2011.
Perhaps you are wondering why we are called the 1947 Tavern? There are, afterall, no visible signs hearkening back to that forgone era, not postwar jubilation, no Rita Hayworth movie posters, none of Christian Dior’s «New Look.» We are named the 1947 Tavern because that’s the same year a little spot called the Elbow Room opened in this location. It was lively tavern that had a great bar and great sandwiches. It was dedicated to quality food and drink in a comfortable setting. They were a Pittsburgh institution for 63 years. That is the image in which we model ourselves — welcoming and heartening and excellent, without flash or pretension. We are in it for the long-haul.
