I took my 2014 Tundra into SNS auto sports and spoke to the owner Brian. He’s a wordy guy that certainly sounds like he knows what he’s doing, but the end results speak louder. I brought two JL amps and four door speakers that I removed from my other Tundra to have installed, I wanted to keep my factory NAV system.
Brian said they’d have to remove the seats to install the amps, and that was an extra charge… no problem from me. Brian gave me the option of wiring kits, pure copper or CCA (copper clad aluminum), and said CCA was no good so I chose the better copper. He said for that truck I’d need no more than 25 feet of amp wire for both amps, each under a seat. I had my old cable that I pulled from my 2011 Tundra where the amps were mounted in the same areas, and it was actually 22 feet total, so we were good there. I chose the better speaker wire and RCA cables as well.
I left my truck and received a call from one of his installers about 4 hours later stating that they had to put the amps in the back as there was no room under the seats, and that the under seating vents would be blocked. I told them that there was plenty of room under the seat, and it was the same layout as my 2011 Tundra, and I did not ask or want them behind the rear seat, as I needed that little bit of storage. I reiterated that I needed the amps mounted with the controls and jacks facing the door so I could access them and keep them hidden. They said OK and called me to pick the truck up about 2 hours later.
When I arrived the first thing I noticed was amps were both installed with the controls facing the rear seats and hanging out where anyone sitting in the back would have their feet on them. When I questioned Brian he said they wouldn’t fit the other way. I proceeded to show him that there was a ton of space, enough to stack two amps on top of one another. His voice began to get combative. He said it would block the air vent, and I showed him that a simple spacer on the corners would raise it off the vent.. He argued that they couldn’t secure it, so rather than arguing with an easy way to do so, I said OK and moved on. He did not remove the seats as he said they didn’t need to remove them. That’s because they took the short cut!
I started the truck and immediately heard a lot of air sound with volume on zero. He said that was the best that could be done due to the factory system. That may be the case, so I just agreed and said it sounded like crap. I revved the engine and heard a little bit of engine noise, in which Brian said was not engine noise. Ok. To say the least, I wasn’t happy and I let him know. It was late and a major thunderstorm was about to dump, so I went inside and paid up. They hit me for the 40 feet of main amp cable, and when I tried to explain that it shouldn’t have been 40 feet, but 25 max as quoted, he had some story that it took that much. Normally I would have stayed and talked it out, but I was starting to feel taken advantage of and getting angry (also stems from an earlier strobe kit price gouging they tried on me. brand switching, etc) so i paid whatever they wanted and left.
To shorten this a bit, as they limit the review to 5000 words, a few days later my system started popping when I hit bumps, and making static clicks. Before I could pull over, the subs freaked out and starting humming full blast similar to and echo reverb. I cut the stereo off and it made no change. I called Brian and he said the amp had a bad allen screw on the hot. Well, it was the ground that was loose, and would it not have been a better choice to put a new screw in for your customer rather than leaving them go with the potential to damage their system.
Out of review space… conclusion. Ground wire was loose, sub amp wired with one wire, bad splice, paid for material and service not provided (copper cable got CCA, cheap RCA’s, they ran a y split from subs to my amp with a very bad splice job when it should be 2 pairs to amp, as this amp is regulated and not bridgable, (see image). Very bad experience, This install reminds me of when we were all backyard installers in the 90’s and just learning. I doubt Brian did this install, as I don’t see him being this bad judging by how he talks a good game but it’s his biz and his name on the line and he failed this one miserably.
As for the strobe kit, being in the cell tower business I can get strobe kits at same price they can, and I checked vendor pricing after I purchased them. Brian jacked it over $ 300 mark up for 4 strobes. Further, he wouldn’t tell me the brand until they ordered. said it depended on which he could get first after the order, but they’d be best brand out. That’s new to me. I did a bit of shopping around before settling on SNS for window tinting. They were the most expensive price-​wise but I assumed if I wanted top notch, I’d have to pay for it. So I call to make an appointment. I do not lie about the type of car I have — 2013 Honda Fit. Appointment is at 10, I show up at 9:45, choose the tints and I’m told it’ll be 2 hours. There is a crease in the back window that the guy was «going to leave but I told him to correct it,» so says the lady that runs the front desk. I’m not told how long the correction will take but I DO know that I walk out at 1:05 PM. I need to be at my job at 2. Some guy (who is HE? — does he run the place? Who the fuck knows.) tells me that my car has a «lot of windows» when I tell him I wasn’t counting on 3 hrs. to do this. I called in advance and told these jerks what type of car I had. They knew how many windows there were before I even showed up. You’d think they would have decreased $ 20 off the price for the extra hour but that’s asking too much. I’m STILL fuming. What a bunch of dicks. I give 3 stars only because they have «free» wifi which I found out about 2 hours, 45 minutes into my wait.
Be smart and go elsewhere.
