I had an incredibly relaxing time here. I’d gone up to the Finger Lakes region with the intention of getting good viewing for the Geminid meteor shower — sadly the weather was overcast/rainy the entire time. Before going up, I’d emailed a number of different hotels, guest houses, b&bs, cabin rental places, etc, etc, to find out if any of them had good viewing in the area, or that holy grail, a hot tub with a good eastern view.(Meteors from a hot tub!) Donna Tanner was one of the few people who responded to my quest with enthusiasm, and in fact Rufus Tanner House does possess a hot tub with an essentially unobstructed eastern view. So, we went. Since the weather didn’t cooperate, we didn’t get too distracted by our original mission, and we able to enjoy the other things RTH offers. The rooms are just lovely, large, many with gas fireplaces, and lovely bathrooms. The food was incredible. Every morning was a gourmet three-course breakfast that left us energetic and totally satisfied. They also feature an array of lovely pets, two cats and a dog, that are friendly, affectionate, and well-groomed. And Donna and Rick themselves are unfailingly hospitable, accommodating, eager to make suggestions for local attractions and local businesses. The location itself is great. You’re just over the PA border, and there are several big state parks on that side. On the NY side, you’re near Corning, famous for its glass-making, all the finger lakes, and cities like Ithaca and Seneca Falls. We spent a lot of time just tooling around, drinking in the landscape. The finger lakes are themselves amazing, and they’re also lined with wineries, if that’s your thing.
