Our families come to us because our community nurtures our students’ creativity, curiosity and intrinsic motivation for learning — skills which, studies unfortunately repeatedly tell us, disappear in most children as they progress through traditional academia. Our students are ready for all styles of schools when they move on to Kindergarten. With the ownership they take early on in their own intellect, they’re also becoming beautifully prepared for the wider world.
We think that now more than ever Arizona children deserve these thoughtful spaces for creative cognition. Our private school education is based on the latest brain research with child development knowledge always driving our decisions.
History
Established in 1977.
These are exciting days at The Hills! After 35 years as Shepherd of the Hills Cooperative Preschool, the church and school community launched a new philosophy inspired by esteemed schools in northern Italy. North American interest in Reggio Emilia schools exploded when they were named «the best in the world» by Newsweek magazine in 1991.
Meet the Business Owner
Nola E.
Business Owner
Before founding the Hills School, Dr. Enge taught in progressive, multi-age classrooms of K-1−2 students where Reggio-inspired beliefs and methods were celebrated. She also taught and wrote for university students studying to be teachers. Nola is an outspoken advocate for children’s rights and their access to creative expression through the arts, in part because she knows firsthand the joyfulness of a life connected to the arts. As a touring musician/singer, she’s traveled to over 50 countries, often as a guest of the USO. Nola worked in television news, as a piano teacher, in agriculture, as an entertainment agent and writer. She partnered in a Writer’s Workshop for children and is the Executive Director of Scottsdale Glee children’s choir. Nola earned her Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education/Curriculum and Instruction in 2009, receiving her diploma and a hearty handshake from President Barack Obama.
