History

Established in 2009.

SwapSmart opened for business on July 17, 2009 in the Deer Valley Center, on the southeast corner of 43^rd Avenue and Thunderbird Road in Phoenix, Arizona. SwapSmart offers individual retailers space to sell their products and/​or service on a month-​to-​month agreement, with prices starting as low as $ 375 per month, including electricity.

Business Owner

After spending 10 years in the cell phone retailing business, I knew I wanted to do something a little different. All of my professional experience was in specialty retail management, so I knew I wanted to leverage that experience, but without being directly involved in the retail process. I had initially considered consulting, but then realized I had far more passion as a hands-​on operator.

After months of contemplation, I came up with the idea of opening an upscale, indoor marketplace. I had utilized swap meets, fairs, flea markets, expos, and other types of events to promote my cell phone business, and I felt like Phoenix was missing out on the type of higher quality, cleaner, family-​friendly marketplace (swap meet, mini-​mall, etc) that many other cities boast.
