Specialties

We specialize in tropical fish, with a small selection of saltwater fish, reptiles and small animals. We can custom order any size and wood trim of tank, as well as any other supplies you may need that we don’t have in stock.

Our reptile selection is small, but select, and features 20 vision cages of healthy animals, hand-​selected from private breeders.

We also feature dog and cat adoptions every other Saturday, where you can find your new best friend and save a life.

History

Established in 1979.

Amazon Aquarium was established in the late 70s as north Phoenix’s premier tropical fish shop. The owners sought to provide higher quality, healthier fish at a competitive price. Over the years, Amazon expanded to carry saltwater fish, reptiles and small animals.

Amazon remained in its original location at 35^th Avenue and Thunderbird until June 2007, when it was relocated to its current location off 43^rd Avenue and Thunderbird. The original owners, Bob and Jane Riedel, still own and operate Amazon, along with their sister and daughter. They are proud to still be a family owned and operated business in the sea of big boxes, and strive to provide superior customer service, animals and products.

I opened Amazon Aquarium in 1979 to share my love of tropical fish with the public.

After my service with the US Navy, I began breeding fish (specifically discus and angel fish) in my early 20s, and owned and operated a wholesale tropical fish supply for over a decade. I have also worked in dog training and shown Irish Wolfhounds and German Shepherds for many years.

My wife, Jane, has worked in Amazon since the mid-​80s, and still operates the store daily. She is also a talented dog groomer with 30 years of experience.
