History

Established in 1994.

Founded in 1994, Yards began as a garage-sized operation in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia, where the award-winning Extra Special Ale was born. Now located at 901 N. Delaware Avenue in Philly’s Northern Liberties neighborhood, we’ve upheld our distinctive English-inspired style while continuing to embrace the innovative spirit that defines American craft brewing. We’re proud to be Pennsylvania’s first 100% wind-powered brewery, and we strive to practice social and environmental responsibility in all aspects of company life. Business Owner

Tom Kehoe is the founder, president and brewmaster of Yards Brewing Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Kehoe has been in the brewing industry since 1992 and began his career in college, cleaning kegs and working the bottling line at the British Brewing Company, a former microbrewery in Maryland. Kehoe attended Lehigh University for engineering and graduated from Western Maryland College with a degree in business. He started Yards in October 1994 in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia and has grown the brewery from a cask conditioned keg-only production of 15 barrels per week to a full packaging brewery with a capacity of over 50,000 barrels. His favorite Yards ale is ESA, of course!

Good beer nasty service. It took atleast 15 minutes to get a drink (because i look young) but i mean just card me dont make me stand there forever saying excuse me to every hostess, and dont make a lame excuse for why you didn’t get to me when i saw you serve everyone first, after i got that round of drinks after leaving a generous tip, i waited in the merch line to buy a growler with my beer glass still in hand (confirming im 21) waited in line for about 6 minutes and then when i said i wanted a growler they said okay someone will help you soon. Waited 8 after asking a few times in between and then walked out. F this place respect young customers, dont be a holes

Loved the tour. Tap room was tiny and awesome. Food truck BBQ was kickass. Of course, the beer is great (Love Stout is my favorite). Perfect spot in a cool part of Philly, definitely worth a stop!

Peggy!!! Service is always a major part of a company. This woman and all the crew are great.
The brew?! I’ve been to many breweries, and this one of my favorites. The beer tastes of passion. Yes, when one pours their heart and soul in it, you’ll know the difference. I had 7 different kinds and each one was phenomenal.
The merchandise was attractive and priced well. I purchased two shirts and will wear them often in California.
The only sad and tragic thing!!! I won’t be able to have any YARDS over in California! If I could somehow support them in any way to venture toward this side of the US I would. I sound like I’m pimping them out, but honestly, it’s just really great beer!

I was in Philly with my boyf for a show and we had some time to kill, so we stopped into the tasting room since we’re both a fan of Yards beers. The inside was huuuuuge with a pool table and lots of tables and bar space. They only serve food Mon-Fri but they have a food truck on the weekends. We, unfortunately, got there a lil too late to check out the truck, but Yards allows you to eat the food inside or get your beer in a plastic cup so you can eat outside. We tried a seasonal flight and got a couple rounds of Brawler. I really like the Chocolate Love Stout (and I’m usually not a fan of most stouts) and the Orang’n of Species. Our flight was $ 7 and beers were $ 5 so it’s pretty cheap for the quality. They sell growlers and cases in case you want to take somethin’ home with you. We’ll definitely be back to grab some more beers next time we’re in Philly!

I decided to make a trip to Yards Tasting Room and I enjoyed myself. I had a fellow lover of craft beers join me and the afternoon of tasting flights began. We started with the «Revolutionary Flight». Ahhh… The Tavern Porter, Tavern Ale, and the Porter were superb! I am an IPA fan & tried the Eureka IPA and it was fantastic!
For the large space and volume of people, the service and turn around on orders was quick and the staff were attentive.
I would suggest that if you want to have a nice afternoon/evening — make this your first stop before you hit the other place in the area.
Be aware of nice days — there is a line to get in, but it is worth it!

Yards may just set the bar for what a brewery should be in terms of experience. The only thing lacking at the brewery is the ambiance which is fairly sterile and the crowd which is a bit bro heavy, but it’s to be expected at such a nice brewery. Upon entering, you get a fairly healthy pour of a sample, the saisson when we came, which was quite nice though a little hoppy for me for a saisson. I don’t love most of the beer I find from them at our beer store, but the choices beyond the standards here were awesome. There are 4 standard beers, 4 revolution inspired ones, and 5 small batch and experimental ones which rotate. You can do a flight of each type. The revolutionary ones which included those inspired by Washington and Jefferson’s home brews and some tavern ales were quite good. The small batch were my favorite though and very unique. After all the tastes, we took the free tour which visited the impressively large brewery and workshop which is about to expand again. The tour was pretty good for a brewery and actually went beyond the normal «hops, barley, yeast, and water» parts that every other brewery seems unwilling to go beyond. We even got two more samples of the standard beers while on the tour. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great, or we would have sat at the tables outside. Instead, we visited the food truck which was outside as the brewery doesn’t serve food. They normally have a food truck over the weekends with different types of food. The fries we got from the Guerilla truck were heavy, but really well seasoned. Yards is pretty much the perfect brewery experience, they just need to get a little more atmosphere.

Nice time was had by all. We were greeted with a saison sample and took a seat, awaiting our tour. While we waited, we had a flight of 4 beers for $ 7. The chocolate stout was lush and tasty. Our tour guide was one of the original employees and clearly loves his job. He was funny and informative. More samples were handed out during the tour. When we finished the tour, it was a mob scene so we headed out. I’d like to go back during the week to sit longer and try the food.

Yards was nice and spacious. They have a pretty big outside seating area too but you can’t bring glass out there. They have a small parking lot so we had to park at SugarHouse and walk over. We got a free sample of ESA when we walked in. I liked how they had a ton of seating but they had one line for people to order beers so you didn’t have to fight with people who are seating at the bar to get beers. I tried the Grapefruit beer which was okay. My favorites was the Chocolate Milk Stout and my boyfriend got a growler of the Thomas Jefferson beer, that was DELICIOUS.
On weekends, they have food trucks which is awesome and they also have a kitchen. We went on ³⁄₂₆ and the Oink and Moo BBQ Food Truck was there… SO GOOD!!! Favorites were the ribs and pulled pork sliders.
I don’t love Yards beer so I’d only go back for a good food truck or if our friends wanted to go.
Staff was nice and someone was always walking around to clean up trash and glassware.

I made Yards Brewing Company a stop along my Philadelphia brewery tour. At first we arrived with all intentions of taking a tour but then realized that if we opted out of the tour and just got a few beers, we’d be able to hit more stops. So we decided… who needs a tour?
We ordered up a couple flights, one of their Signature Ales (I liked the brawler and the love stout) and another that was a variety of their Seasonal Ales and Ales of the Revolution. The tap room has a cool atmosphere and we enjoyed the brews. For a Saturday afternoon the place was popular but we were still able to get a table.
I’m also a sucker for craft root beer. The fact that Yards had their own delicious root beer on tap is a plus. And it earned them an extra star. Worth a stop when you’re in the city of brotherly love. Next time maybe I’ll stay for the tour.

This place has been around the corner from my bff’s all these years and I can’t believe I have only just now visited this brewery. We had such an amazing time here!
We rolled up on a Sunday (beautiful day), and saw tons of peeps drinking outdoors in the outdoor seating soaking up the sun with a fresh pint. Joining a tour was so easy and did I mention 100% free?
We just strolled in, and were greeted with a beer to sample and a token. We were shortly called in for our tour, where 2 more delicious samples awaited us. The folks at yards were extra generous with samples, as extras were left over and it was up to us to finish them. Say no more — challenge accepted!!!
I wish I could remember the name of our tour guide cuz honestly he was just awesome. We had the best time with him. He was super friendly and chill and above all, FUNNY. He did such a great job explaining everything to us in real non-scientist terms, all while keeping us laughing. I’ve visited quite a few breweries before, but this tour really stood out for me and I wish I could give him a shoutout.
I liked that we could roll up when we wanted (within tour hours) on Saturday or Sunday, that the tour was free, and that such cool people worked there.
We ended our tour with some beer flights at the bar. What a fab Sunday afternoon!
I’ll be back guys!

I love this place. They have a nice pool table, the place is huge. They do tours and are very friendly. MY favorite part of this place is the different beer flight options available. PRetty cool stuff. I never had the food. For the kids they have root beer. Im not a fan of root beer but it gives options and its a huge sized cup.

We decided to stop at Yards Brewing Company while visiting Philly. It’s not too far from downtown by the waterfront. We went on a Saturday and it was hopping. It was really busy but we managed to get spot. The tours were full for the day but we decided to stay and try some beer. We both did a a different beer flight so we could try different beers. Both flights were good and a decent pour as well.
Service was good and the bartenders were friendly. The crowd was a mix of old and young– but everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

I absolutely LOVED this brewery! For starters, it’s on the water and a nice walk from the center of Philly (about 1.5 miles from the liberty bell.) We entered and were immediately greeted with a sample of one of their beers on tap. We wanted to do a tour and had about 30 minutes to kill so we got ourselves some beers and sat at one of their many tables.
I ordered the Ales of Revolution sampler and enjoyed all of them. I can’t really remember specific details, but nothing negative stood out. The tour itself was typical– we learned about the ingredients, saw where they brewed the beer, observed the bottling area. Our guide was super charismatic and the tour included several samples of their two signature house beers. There was a lot of sampling going on for a free tour! This is a must see if you’re in Philly!

For the beer lover who is visiting Philadelphia, Yards is a pretty cool stop. First it’s a brewery. Duh. Second, it’s a historic stop in a way since some of the beers are brewed from recipes that came from our forefathers. Or some such stuff. Who doesn’t want to taste a beer brewed from George Washington’s own recipe? Really, it would be unpatriotic. And third, it’s a brewery. I mentioned that, right? Moving on. In addition, Yards is down by the waterfront, making it a quick stop over if you are already going to go to Center City, Old City, the waterfront, etc. Add it to your list if you are already going to be in one of those areas.
So the beer was pretty good. I will say that we didn’t really find any that blew us out of the water, but there were lots of very good beers there to sample. Would highly recommend going with a flight so that you get to taste as much goodness as possible. My personal favorite was the stout, which was flavorful and creamy without being too heavy. I also saw they had a chocolate version but I did not get to try it. The beers «historic» beers named after George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin were all good, unique and fun to try.
The only thing I really didn’t get was the kind of metal/industrial feel of the brewery itself. It didn’t seem to really jive with the whole historic theme to me. But independently, it was a totally nice brewery. Big, spacious, with a free parking lot next to the brewery. Thumbs up.

As a bar/brewery I think this place is solid. On the weekends their kitchen is closed, but looks like they always have a weekly food truck parked right outside — and you can order there, but bring your food in to eat, drink and chill. The tour itself, left a lot to be desired.
Our tour guide (I think his name is Mike, but don’t quote me), was very fun, humorous and upbeat — but we left with very little information about the brewing process or the brewery itself I left thinking that he was more of a stand up comedian, than a brewery tour guide — and my partner felt the exact same way. I love humor, but it was just mismatched. I’d go as far to say it was 80−85% jokes (not even pertaining to Yards) and 15−20% facts about Yards. That’s pretty mismatched.
The bar itself is nice — obviously very fairly priced brews — $ 5 sample flights, they fill growlers, and also cases at $ 34 a pop. The tour did leave me wondering how the other tours faired.

If you are a fan of beer and in Philadelphia, then you must come to Yards Brewing! There are free brewery tours on the weekend from 12−4pm, so I stopped in with some friends on a Sunday to take advantage of this. After putting our name on the list, we took a seat at the bar and ordered some brews and food. I chose the Saison (perfect for summer) to wash down the incredible bison and beef chili. My friends could not decide on one beer variety, so they opted for two beer flights: one with the Ales of the Revolution and the other with the Signature Ales.
Our tour guide was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. We were treated to the history of Yards in addition to details on their current operations. This information was unsurprisingly passed on to us as we sipped on free tasters of the Yards Brawler and Philadelphia Pale Ale beers. I already loved Yards beer before coming to the brewery but after my positive experience at their headquarters, I appreciate what they do even more!

Oh Yards! My love for your beer has reached a new level!
Coming to Yards Brewery is an absolute fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Take a brewery tour, kick back with some more beers in the tasting room, take home a growler, 6 pack or case, t-shirt, decorative beer glass — whatever tickles your fancy.
The tour was dope. Christian was our guide and he had us drink (and finish) a ton of beer on the tour. So unless double-fisting is your cup of tea (or in this case, beer), I suggest finishing your drink before entering the tour or wait until after.
Stayed for some more drinking in the tasting room since we were able to snag seats at the bar and ordered a beer flight. My love is always for their Love Stout and IPA’s. Had their Rye IPA which is hoppy deliciousness. Coffee stout, ESA and Saison were fave picks as well.
Love Stout was on Nitro the time we went and because of that we couldn’t take home a growler. Had Yards Root Beer for the first time and wish I could take some of that home too but unfortunately they can’t do growlers either because it would go flat. (sad face)
If their beer alone doesn’t get you to come back here, the awesome vibe, atmosphere and friendly bartenders will. I know I will!

While Yards doesn’t necessarily make my go-to beer, I do have to say that they’ve got a great operation going on. They have an excellent brewery and taproom, great distribution and tap representation in the Philadelphia area, and really get themselves out there socially and charitably in the community.
I’ve been to the brewery and taproom a handful of times now and am pretty impressed. The taproom has a very spacious bar with tables available as well. The taproom could be a destination in itself. They have a wide selection of their own beers, which I would have to assume would be the best selection out there. I had the pleasure to have the Philly Pale Ale on cask yesterday, which had a hint of grapefruit. Did they take their own beer up a notch or what? I believe they serve food during the week and have food trucks come by on the weekends. I haven’t done the tour in ages but you are going to learn a lot. It’s neat stuff.
Yards represents itself really well. Founder Tom Kehoe is always involved with events in the Philadelphia beer scene. I’ve seen him out and about before, and think that it’s really cool how involved he is and how he isn’t just a figurehead. Yards has various charitable initiatives, and does some pretty cool stuff socially. They have a running club that meets once a month and then drinks afterwards. What more motivation do you need? They recently started a ladies drinking group called Lady Birds Beer Club which also meets on a monthly basis. They make it really easy to want to go there and drink their beer.
Philly is a pretty big beer city, and if you are looking to do one brewery excursion or pick a favorite brewery to hang out at, Yards would be it.
