We specialize in high-​quality, used furniture that’s in excellent condition. We also specialize in providing fresh inventory daily and a high turnover — we get new truckloads of furniture every few hours, every day!

History

Established in 1994.

One of two Uhuru Furniture locations nationally, Uhuru Furniture — Philadelphia has been successful since our start in 1994. We serve the unique market for quality, gently-​used furniture at affordable prices. We also provide a fast & free professional furniture pick-​up service for donations!

We are a nonprofit — 100% of our proceeds benefit the African People’s Education and Defense Fund. Throughout our history, volunteers have been crucial in helping move furniture, working with customers, and spreading the word around Philly. Open volunteer meetings are every Wednesday — call us to join!

Today, Uhuru Furniture continues to be a cornerstone of Philadelphia’s local businesses, as well as a way for the progressive, forward-​thinking sector of Philly to help end disparities in health, education, and economic development.

We have also successfully built health programs in Philadelphia, including the Uhuru Health Festival & Flea Markets and regular community health forums.

This review is for Uhuru’s furniture donation pick-​up. We were recommended to contact Uhuru by our movers, since we had a lot of furniture that we weren’t planning on taking with us. The process was so easy and everyone we interacted with were so pleasant — we sent pictures of the furniture to Uhuru via email for approval, arranged a pick up time, and Uhuru’s folks showed up (early!) and removed our furniture in less than 15 minutes (this is no small feat since we live in a fourth floor walk up, and they were removing a sofa). All in all, they couldn’t have made it any easier to donate, and to a great cause.

Great place and really super nice staff! On way home from visiting my son at temple drove by this place on Broad street. Bought a really nice wrought iron patio set they had displayed outside! Great buy. Ended up buying a lot of other smaller items too! And it benefits community.

Good and cheap furniture for a charitable cause! I found a reasonably priced like new ikea shelf here, and the men who work here were so kind and helpful in helping me pack it in my mid size Honda even though it is a very large and bulky shelf. I was able to unload it with no problem when I got home. There were other interesting pieces I spotted here as well, but I did not pick anything else up because I did not need it at the time. I will definitely come back in the future when I need more furniture.

After searching for months for a new coffee table, it dawned on me that I didn’t want a new coffee table, I wanted a glorious and surprising vintage one. I searched Unilocal for a used furniture store that would offer an eclectic and varied selection. Uhuru is that place. I walked away with exactly what I was looking for, and only wish I had gone there first.
I admit, there were other things I wanted from here that weren’t for sale and for display only, so I walked off pouting, but even as someone who appreciates: lightweight living: I still have too much stuff.

Uhuru has such a large selection and such a friendly staff! I’ve found many pieces of furniture for myself and roommates here. Chairs, desks, dressers and couches. Love this place and I’ll continue to visit for all of my furniture needs.

Super awesome place. All of the staff were really attentive, explaining different aspects of their business, if I was looking for something in particular, even measuring and helping me figure out if the items would fit through my door. The prices are pretty good, and the furniture is in top notch condition. I frequently check out their website to see their new items so I can get the jump on them.
Furthermore, their delivery fees are pretty decent. Delivery is in-​house and isn’t outsourced to some unknown contractors. They have varying delivery zones that determine price. The first zone is $ 20-​$ 30 flat rate depending on which floor your apartment is. I live up near Temple and only paid $ 25 for delivery, can’t beat that!

Great service. Good prices. Got one of the less ‘used’ pieces — red faux leather couch with only minor scratches — for $ 325 with additional 10% off and another $ 5 for checking in online. Everyone was offered the 10% and I asked about anything more and was told about the $ 5. Other than that, they stated prices aren’t negotiable and in my opinion things are priced fairly. Got delivery for a reasonable extra charge just 3 hours later!

Staff was so nice and helpful. I got a great sturdy dresser here for under $ 50. Was going to go with Ikea but I knew I could find a better price. I liked the selection they had here and I look forward to going back. I really appreciate the guys helping me load my car for me. They didn’t try to sell me the delivery fee knowing my car would accommodate it. Again, I’ll go back.

Amazing. I love this place. Very affordable and great service. I furnished my whole house with furniture from uhuru. The furniture here is a lot more unique and cheaper than ikea. The workers there helped me load everything while it was snowing.

If you haven’t been to Uhuru yet – you should definitely change that!
They are a fantastic resource for second hand furniture, art, and accessories for the home just north of Center City, Philadelphia.
Their prices are super reasonable (they’re ALWAYS having sales!) and the staff is extremely helpful and friendly.
Although we haven’t been in the market to donate anything yet – Uhuru is the only place I would go with my donations. From what I understand, they offer free donation pickup as well as delivery of furniture purchased from them for a nominal fee.
They have a frequent buyer card which I almost feel guilty for using because their prices are already so low but would definitely come in handy if you were furnishing a whole room (and then some!)
If you know anyone who is looking for something not from Ikea or Raymour and Flanigan – I highly recommend you check them out! They have pieces from every generation and their inventory is always changing!

This place always has the coolest looking furniture both inside and out. The prices look great too. Definitely coming back here soon to grab some of the tables and chairs they had outside. Leather couch looked Awesome too.

Amazing service and great people. You’ll be surprised what you can find here and the best part is that all of the proceeds go toward a good cause that is much needed in Philadelphia. Some pieces are old and have a ton of character, some are nearly brand new and come from well known stores, so you can check the price and see how much you’re saving. If you need furniture, this should be your first stop.

My roommate and I were here around 11 on Saturday to look for a new couch. Lo and behold, a cute, comfy sofa bed was the first item that caught our eyes – and we wound up purchasing it about ten minutes later after browsing the rest of the store! The store owner was extremely nice and helpful and was willing to split the purchase between two cards. As another reviewer has mentioned, delivery is cash-​only and through an independent company, but they were very fast and friendly in moving the couch in later that afternoon.
The couch looks next-​to-​new and we bought it for a steal during a 15% off storewide sale. Really looking forward to coming back here when it comes time to replace more furniture!

This shop is great, they support the African community by acquiring and selling interesting furniture/​knick knacks. Their new location is much better, as you can actually see all of the things they have for sale. The space is much roomier and welcoming.

Having found some great items at the old location, I was thrilled to learn that Uhuru was moving to a bigger store! It’s now two stories and you can easily see all of the items for sale. I do kind of miss the cluttered/exciting/don’t know what you’ll find kind of atmosphere at the last location, though. It’s much more conventional now.
Ruby is a pleasure to deal with and you can tell she cares about her customers and the mission of Uhuru. Delivery is via an independent service (cash only when they arrive at your house), but even they were very nice.
Inventory comes in and goes often, so come here often if you’re looking for something particular! I purchased a fantastic mid-​century green armchair which I’m super excited to sit in and study :)
