Street Tails Animal Rescue

What a fantastic, knowledgable staff. They remain professional even when I tell them that a medical condition prevents me from adopting a dog that weighs more than 18 lbs. (I have had other organizations make snide remarks and/​or roll their eyes at me)
Street tails also runs a fantastic retail shop in the same location and I always buy from them to help support the underdog, so to speak.
I really don’t like shopping from the major conglomerates whenever possible.

I adopted my wonderful mini-​pittie from STAR several years ago. STAR is run on a shoe string budget with only one paid employee, all the rest are volunteers. They put the animals first and are deeply committed to placing these (often special needs) dogs in loving homes. If they are slow getting back to you or seem occasionally disorganized, please keep in mind that they are stretched pretty thin keeping this amazing place running on pennies. The dogs all come from ACCT, usually they are chosen as dogs that would not do well in the larger shelter and are brought to STAR where they can have a better shot at finding a home. They usually have a variety of small and large dogs, and will work with you to help you find a dog that is a good fit for you. I believe they usually have additional dogs in foster care that are available for adoption, beyond the dogs that are in the kennels in the shelter. STAR is an amazing place doing incredible work for homeless dogs.

Clean space. Four large kennels and six small kennels. Nice array of toys. Nice staff. Love the work they do to get animals OUT of city places. Love the little kitschy names they give to the animals. Very relaxed feel. Pets seemed loyal and loving to the volunteers. Could be a really good option for you to find your lovey.

Street tails does amazing work finding these rescued dogs new homes. The problem is the people that they have running the place. My girlfriend and I were told numerous times that we had the first application in on a poodle puppy, which we were extremely happy about considering our poodle Wookie just passed away last year. The poodle puppy was to be ready on Christmas Eve and we put in our application two months before that. Ours was the very first application! But for some reason, the unqualified dishonest people that run this place continually lied to my girlfriend and I about us being first in line and would receive a call when the puppy was ready. Instead, we never received a single call and when Christmas Eve rolled around, we called and the lady said the puppy had already been adopted to someone else! What kind of a rescue does this to people? What kind of people do they have running this place. I feel bad for the poor dogs that won’t receive homes because of these unqualified compassionless people they have running this place. I would not recommend to anyone to try and rescue a dog from here because there’s a good chance you will be lied to and never get the pooch that you want. Street tails needs to find more honest and respectable people to run their dog rescue or else they will continue pushing people that want to rescue into having to resort to breeders. It pains my heart!
I called again Street Tails to discuss this situation and the lady that I talked to gave me no real answers. They are the most heartless people I have ever met in any dog rescue! She even hung up on me?
If you really want a dog, stay far away from this place!

I love Street Tails! I adopted my puppy Leo from here about 4 months ago and Devon was SUPER helpful, she was incredibly sweet and thorough, answering all of my questions and giving me tons of advice on my first four legged friend. I still frequent the shelter now that Leo is part of my family– we just did pictures with Santa here this past weekend! I know I sound like a crazy dog lady, but it was for a good cause, I swear. Proceeds from pictures with santa benefited Street Tails :-)
Even if you aren’t ready to adopt a new four legged friend, visit Street Tails to buy gently used toys, accessories, and clothing for the pets that you already have. The prices are affordable and the selection is top notch– but the best part is that you’re supporting this local business instead of a big box store like Pet Smart (that bans bully breeds from things like doggie daycare).

my fiancée and i live in an apartment, and are not allowed to have large dogs, nor did we feel it’d be fair to have a large dog in an apartment with no yard.
we honestly drove to 6? different shelters over the course of one day trying to find a good dog to adopt — we had no specifics on breed, just wanted one that was under 4 or 5, and under 25pounds. people were not terribly helpful, and most shelters broke our hearts with the small cages and sad looking animals. at our breaking point we decided to come here, just to see before heading home for the day and i’m so glad we did. we had initially put in an application for one dog, because we were told that the people might not adopt him. when i called back the next morning to check in on our application, I spoke with Anna, who within 30 minutes called me back, said our application was approved, that the other dog was being adopted, but to come back and check out the puppy mutts because they were so sweet.
within about 40 minutes we were taking our little guy home because we just fell in love. the paperwork was easy, and because he’s so young (9 weeks!) he hasn’t been neutered yet — but we got easy to follow instructions about getting in touch with the vet, for the procedure as well as his booster shots — all included in the adoption fee.
i think this is a great organization, and love their mission to support dogs with health issues or other special needs. the animals are all well cared for, seem very happy, and lots of volunteers always stop by to help out… and the staff really seems to know the pets. stop by!

Awesome dog rescue with dogs of all sizes! This place is awesome! It feels like a chic dog store and the dogs are so happy waiting for their forever home. The employees are friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable about the dogs. The Monster Milers is a volunteer running organization that runs with shelter dogs and they run the dogs at STAR which gives the dogs exercise and keeps them happy. Stop in and take home a fur-​ever friend!

They have the cutest dogs here! You can go inside and see all the dogs available for adoption. There is a nice selection of small, medium, and large size dogs. All kinds of breeds and mixes are represented, with a rotating cast, since some of them are adopted so quickly. The employees are really friendly and you can interact with the dogs by going into the larger kennels or taking the smaller dogs out of their cages.
The front of the space is actually a store filled with new and gently used items for sale. The proceeds go towards the rent for the storefront and other expenses incurred by the rescue, which I think is really smart. They have pretty much everything for sale there from dog toys, collars, leashes, bowls, etc. All of the prices are very reasonable, so it’s better than taking a trip to one of the big box stores if there’s something you need to pick up.
I also volunteer here. You can help as much or as little as you want. They are open every day. You can walk the dogs, help clean the linens, help with customers, and even just pet the dogs, if that’s what you want.
This place is a really nice addition to the neighborhood and liberties walk. They have their cats for adoption over at Chez Bow Wow Grooming Salon, down on 2^nd and Fairmount.
