Kim is an amazing hair artist. I went to several salons trying to get my hair the perfect silver and purple. By the time I found salon sugar my hair was extremely brittle and damaged. Kim spent 6 hours doing a color correction and hair repair that gave me amazing results! Hands down one of the best salons in the area!

After much research on vivid hair color and Philly salons, I decided to make an appointment with Kim at Salon Sugar. I had the best experience! The salon is cute and comfortable, and Kim is a doll as well as a gifted artist when it comes to hair color. Kim explained every step of the process and gave great advice for maintaining my new purple and pink hair. I am thrilled with my color and have gotten many compliments.

Another update: just had my locs installed by Crissa. She’s awesome! I had a fair amount of time at the salon (which if you know anything about dreads, is totally normal). The time passed fairly quickly because Crissa and Kim are so friendly and easy to talk to.
I was able to see Kim give 2 lovely cuts and a color, I would highly recommend her! I was there 8 hours so I was able to see her before and afters and the time she took to make sure her clients were happy.
Crissa is awesome at dreads and knows her stuff. She was thorough in explaining the care and maintenance for my new dreadies. She made sure the parting was just right. I love my new guys.
Salon Sugar is still the only place I go for my hair.

Crissa did an amazing job with my dreadlocks and she was more than happy to keep me informed and answer any questions I had for her. I cannot give enough praise for expert and courteous services I received from salon sugar. I came into the salon with much apprehension as I have not been to a stylist in years. Per recommendation by a friend, she suggested I go to salon sugar to see Kim about getting the ombré I wanted. At first glance this didn’t seem like the right place for me. Like most you would usually go to a salon that fits your tastes. I am somewhat conservative and didn’t want any wild colors so I was a little concerned when that’s mostly what I saw. In addition, I have mixed hair African American and Asian. So breakage, heat styling, and dryness was my main concern and also did Kim have experience with mixed or black hair? Well absolutely yes, she did.
She listened to all my concerns about what I wanted to do and how would it affect my hair. She told me that coloring my dark brown hair and transitioning it to the light brown to blondish would be too traumatic especially when I have never colored. So she broke down my options and gave me a realistic option for hair coloring. She even suggested the Olaplex system to add to the bleach that would be needed to lighten my hair. Kim explained it is a 3 part system that would help lessen the damage of bleaching and help rebond hair. If you never heard of it google it you’ll be glad they offer it there. I was super skeptical but she said she would talk me through the whole process and only do what I wanted. She did just that.
Kim is just amazing. She started by trimming my ends ever so slightly showing me how much she was cutting. She explained the bleaching and toning process before, during and after making me feel super comfortable. Kim checked on me constantly while my hair was processing making sure I was OK. She did all the Olaplex steps and deep conditioned my hair as well.
Well, once the color was in I was overjoyed in how wonderful it came out. My hair was soft, breakage was not an issue and moisturized just right. Remember I said she would only do what I wanted. I asked if I could opt not to have my hair blown out or styled. Like I said I just wanted an ombré no styling. I like my hair to air dry and I prefer to style myself. Kim was just as sweet as told me it was perfectly fine as she understood.
So in a nutshell. If you want an amazing, knowledgeable, friendly colorist and stylist go to Kim. She knows what’s she doing and won’t pressure you to do anything. Shes honest and listens. What more could you want in a stylist? Thanks Kim!!!

The pink is disgusting but Kim gives the best cut ever!!! I tell her to make me fabulous and she does just that.
You should go ahead and book your appt asap. You’ll love her just as much as I do.

I’ve been getting my hair cut by Kim for a couple years now. She recently relocated to Salon Sugar and I was hesitant about making an appointment since I don’t have dreadlocks or anything remotely crazy. I’m glad I did though! Even though the salon specializes in alternative hairstyles, Kim is still providing the regular haircuts and styling. I love what she does with my hair every time. I always leave with exactly what I envisioned. And Kim is super friendly, makes you feel comfortable, and is great at what she does. I highly recommend her! Also worth noting is this salon has online appointment booking, which is helpful.

I highly recommend Kim at Salon Sugar. If you don’t have dreadlocks, don’t be put off by the website/​other reviews. While Salon Sugar does serve those with dreadlocks, Kim’s specialty falls under your basic salon services: cut, color, styling, etc. You do not have to have dreadlocks to go to this adorable salon. Bonus: Salon Sugar has online appointment scheduling!
Kim is friendly, flexible, and overall, very good at what she does. You can tell that she enjoys coming in to work every day. She takes great care and pride in her work, and she is never pushy with ideas or services, which is an experience I have had at other salons. She also takes her time and never rushes to get you out the door, making each client feel like her «only» client. I love, love, LOVE what she can do with my hair. I always walk out feeling like a million bucks. Kim at Salon Sugar is the best!

Let us put first things first. I am a male and this salon is very pink. Who cares? Get past the pink and realize that Kim is one of the best stylists in the city. I would follow her almost anywhere in the Delaware Valley (okay maybe not Jersey) for a haircut. She is caring, takes time to get to know you and what you want. She is so good that I put up with going to an inferior salon previously just because she was there. She is in her new location and I think it is just great. I know her dance card is often full, but the wait is worth it.

When you’re interested in dreads, you do your research — and if you do it well, it will become apparent to you that the notion of getting dreads done at a salon is bashed everywhere that dreadheads tend to commune. And what they say is true for the most part… with the exception of this place. No wax was used at all. Crocheting was efficient and safe. The total price wasn’t even half of other places’ estimates. If I had to describe this place in two words I would say «dreadlocks professionals». Demonstrations were offered during the process, as well as extensive information regarding before and aftercare, and other tips that otherwise would be unknown to a new dreadhead such as myself. This place is LEGIT and well worth the drive even if you don’t live in the area.
Crissa provided excellent service. She put me in her busy schedule wherever I would fit, and was patient and friendly for the entire 8 hours that it took to do my head of hair. I will definitely be coming back for maintenance.

I just wanted to add an update to my review. While I was (Obviously) very excited after my first experience with Candi, I ultimately stopped going to her salon. Why? Because, after 3 cuts, me sending two other people to her, and me giving her some very expensive hair-​do magazines from the 1930s, she never once remembered who I was or knew my name (it’s Sara btw — an incredibly normal name). That is odd. And, it made me feel stupid. She also made me make appointments at least 2 – 3 weeks in advance, and was never on time for them.
It’s unfortunate, because I really do think that Candi is great at what she does! But, is she a good business woman? I don’t think so. If you want to keep your customers, you should at least try to pretend to remember them.

Let down and confused. I went to candi because a friend had a cool, funky haircut from her. Candi was very unprofessional, and seemed to TRY not to connect with me at all.
I went there looking for a good hairstyle that worked with my hair type and face. I knew I wanted to grow it a little bit but did not have an exact style in mind and brought a few pictures for ideas and inspiration.
Candi acted like a speaking another language. I told her I wasn’t sure what I wanted, and she acted like she didn’t know what to do.
In my experience when I don’t have a specific thing in mind, the stylist will look at my hair, tell me what they think would work, and CREATE a nice look.
I almost walked out during the consultation because she was acting so rude and difficult. I should have.
I have a pixi and wanted to grow it a bit longer but it needed to be cleaned up and the back of the bottom trimmed. Well she basically chopped of all the hair on the back of my head. And it sticks out now because I have a cowlick and she just cut it all off like a 5 year old would.
When she showed me I told her in a nice way it wasn’t what I wanted she got defensive and said it was my fault. Then she asked what kind of product I use.
I said I use gel sometimes and she said that’s awful for my hair but she would use it. I was like well if you have something you think would be good then use that and she brought over 2 products for me to pick. Isn’t it her expertise to pick the best product and tell me about why it works??? I thought that’s part of the whole package of paying for a haircut. Then she asked me how I put product in like she’s never done it before.
Basically I felt like I was talking to a wall the whole time and teaching her how to cut hair which she ignored anyways.
Side note, I am an extremely laid back go with the flow type but this experience brought the worst out of me.
Sorry candi but your customer service was non-​existent.

I am very excited to make my first appointment with the very talented Candi Kaboom and Crissa Beans!!! I have heard only great thinhg about this salon. I am looking into dread extensions and know I will get the most customizable look possible. Almost like cabbage Patch Kids… no 2 are alike. Let the journey begin!!!

I will say this, I was here years ago and got a dye job and was… unsure about her. She dyed my hair and then told me it was extra cost to blow it out. Weird (cause usually if you dye it and cut it, the blow out is included) but whatever, I tied it up and went my way.
The worst however happened a few days ago. I told my best friend in the world to come get her hair done. My friend has lightly processed hair (she’s been dying it dark for a while). My friend came 2 hours out of her way for this appointment because she’d seen someone else with a super cool do.
My friend arrived on time. Candi accepted 2 walk in extension appointments instead of doing my friends hair and let her sit there for 2 hours while she chummed it up with some regulars who didn’t have appointments. In my experience you make appointments so you can keep them.
She spent the whole time NOT doing what she was being paid to do. She refused to bleach the hair (something they discussed when she made the appointment 3 months ago). Tried to talk my friend into getting dread extensions. She didn’t do the proper color, she didn’t do the highlights and lo lights because she was «tired». I guess so, its’ late as hell because you totally gave your new client the shaft.
I don’t know what’s happened in the past few years between these two appointments but I am really really let down. Perhaps all the magazine covers and celeb clients have gone to her head. I’m done and will never be going back. I’m sure she’s still a nice lady but I am embarrassed I ever recommended her to anyone I’ve ever met.
Oh and you know after all of the ridiculousness she didn’t offer a discount and gave an outlandish up-​charge for having long hair. She also complained the entire time.

Cool little hair salon that does guys and girls cuts and everything else you can think of. Candy is the only person who works there and does a good job and really seems to try to get everything exactly how you want it. She also has the ability to do everything from the most basic hairstyles to extreme stuff. Both my wife and I have recently started coming here and we are both very happy.

During the heat wave of this past summer (mid-​July, I believe), I decided I was getting tired of my hair and knew I wanted to get it cut super short, but I was also on the fence about joining the blonde-​tourage. So I called Candi just to see if she had any time that week for a cut (since I knew I was due for one) but I had no clue how soon that was going to happen. So, one day while I was on break from work, I checked my voicemail to hear a message from Candi saying she had a cancellation that afternoon and wasn’t sure what my schedule was like (I knew I had a few hours to kill between clocking out of work and a promo gig later that evening). Regardless, I shot Candi an e-​mail with a picture of Annie Lennox (presumably from the «Sweet Dreams» video) just to give her an idea of the style I was aiming for. I saw that picture in a pop music history class and thought, «I NEED to try that sometime because I absolutely love how Annie totally rocks the short hair with the really intense makeup!»
After I clocked out of work, I jumped on the El unsure of whether I’d make it to Candi’s shop early enough, but lo and behold, I called her from less than a block away from the salon and she was still available! After a brief color consult and looking at the picture I had sent her, she was totally down with my idea, assured me that going blonde would be do-​able in as few as 2 processes, and then she got to work on my cut. The cut ended up looking and feeling AMAZING! It was the shortest my hair had EVER been and I had never felt so liberated before in my life! Defintely a huge hair milestone for me ;) Went blonde the following week! HIGHLY recommended!

Guess what, everybody! Salon Sugar has been nominated in MyPhl17’s Hot List for the title of «Best Hair Salon»!! Am I surprised? Not a bit! I would be surprised if Candi’s Salon WASN’T up for the award… and if in case you do not remember, this salon is run by one seriously talented young lady.
Candi does everything within her power to keep the salon clean, stylish, and stocked with all sorts of goodies for anyone to purchase! She takes her job seriously, and treats her clients well. She has found many talented people who make the goodies she stocks in her shop.
Did I say goodies? I meant all sorts of awesome hair products and accessories. Not to mention the gorgeous hand made jewelry… the unique and beautiful club-​wear, ornate handmade purses… and made to order synthetic dread-​lock falls… and more! I know, it’s awesome to just stop in and shop when I’m around South St. without an appointment.

I went here a few days ago with pictures of my favorite ‘30s movie star. I should mention that I’ve taken these same pictures to three other hairstylists, and none of them have really been able to recreate her particular cut. The proprietor, Candi, actually understood what was happening with the cut and made it happen on my head! I really love my hair right now.
Not only did she cut my hair well, but she was easy to talk to, the décor is very fun, and the cut was only $ 25! I’ll definitely be back.

I have had my hair cut in many places, and it seems recently i have hated every hair cut i have had, Hair stylists never take the time to actually listen to what i want and end up cutting my hair how THEY want.
Salon Sugar was different, after about a 10 – 15 minute consultation, Candy got started on my hair, asking numerous times what i wanted, and also offering advice on how best to look after my hair. Which no stylist has ever taken the time to do.
A wonderful environment, A super fun and friendly atmosphere, I left with a smile on my face and look forward to my next visit already.
I LOVE my hair. It’s EXACTLY what i wanted.
