Mirror & Mantel

Went to Mirror & Mantel for this first time today. This spot is really cute & welcoming. I got a woman’s hair cut, blow dry, and conditioning treatment with Sunni. She gave me a great cut and some good advice along the way. She also checked in with me throughout the process which is a huge + in my book. My total bill w/​o tip was $ 90 dollars, which is cheaper than some other salons in the area. All in all a great experience and I’ll be back in a few months.

Great haircut experience! This was my first time at Mirror & Mantel, and Meg did my hair cut. I’m a college student in Philly who has been looking for a good place to get a haircut, and I have wavy, thick, medium length brown hair. I wanted to get a good trim, go a little bit shorter, and get some better layers because my hair was looking like a triangle. Meg took the time to ask questions about what I wanted, and was patient while I pulled up photos on my phone. She used a razor to thin out my really thick hair, which gave me the best layers I’ve ever had! She didn’t push me to buy any expensive hair products, and she even gave me the DIY spray-​in conditioner recipe she uses when I told her that I was into doing that kind of thing. She didn’t cut my hair too short and was very careful to check in that I was doing ok during the cut. Overall, it was great, I’ll definitely be going back.

After my initial review, the team at mirror and mantel went above and beyond to try to ease my bad haircut woes. They offered me a full refund god my cut, and a discount on my next cut if I got up the courage to return. Very sweet and even checked up weeks later to see how the mangled cut was growing out and to remind me my next cut was on them when I was ready. Great customer service goes a long way, and they aren’t afraid to prove it.

I think it’s great that the products are environmentally friendly, not tested on animals and that they’re an assistant free salon, that’s great. The salon is small but cute and quaint. They have a good location near Rittenhouse Square. The salon staff seem to care about leaving customers happy and that’s great customer service.

I got a haircut from Meg and I’m happy to say that I have found a permanent salon! Meg was very friendly and easy to chat with and she really took the time to get my cut just right. I have a TON of hair and she did a great job with my layers and thinning out some of the weight, which is exactly what I wanted. I walked out with a lovely new haircut and a blowout and I couldn’t be happier.
It’s a little more expensive that what I’m used to paying for just a haircut, but I think that’s just Philadelphia…

I went to see LB with 2 inch, practically black, roots and bleach blonde thereafter. She was upfront and told me what we could do to make me not look like crap, which apparently didn’t concern my prior colorist. She was awesome. The products smelled amazing! Best of all my hair looks and feels the best it has in years. At first I was a little apprehensive because it was slightly darker than I was accustomed to, but after 5 minutes, and every minute following, I fell more and more in love. Thank you LB for making me love my look again!

I love this place! The ambience is gorgeous they offer you tea or wine during your visit. I had LB– she is amazing and really knows how to work with long, straight hair. I will definitely be coming back here after my first appointment.

I love Mirror & Mantel. I go to clean up my ends about every 3 months and I see LB every time I go. She does a fabulous job cutting my hair. I have normally straight (some times wavy with the recent humidity) and she does a phenomenal job at blending the layers to give my hair some volume without it looking too choppy! The consult is usually really thorough even though I usually get the same thing done and I walk out each time feeling so great about my hair that I don’t mind spending a little more than other salons charge. It’s worth the extra penny!
The salon itself is really nice too. It’s quaint and kept very clean; the receptionist is very professional. The waiting area is a little small, but I’ve never had to be there for more than 5 minutes. I think what I like the most is that the stylists are in the back when they’re not working on clients. I’ve been to a few other salons where the stylists are always out on the floor, which is ok for the most part. But it’s not fine when you distract the person working on my hair. The products that they use are great too and I find it refreshing that I’m never pressured into buying something at the end of the appointment.
I recommend this place to everyone that asks!

I had a bad experience with one of the hairstylists a couple of years ago. Since then the owner, Katie, has been cutting my hair and she is phenomenal! I suggest her to everyone I know!

I see LB at M&M for cuts and highlights. She is the absolute best with my blonde highlights and always gives me a great cut!
The salon is so cute and the products they use are amazing. Amy at the front desk is so sweet, and the rest of the staff are very friendly too.

Amy, the salon manager, contacted me upon reading my Unilocal review and finding out that I did not have the best experience. I really appreciate that this salon cares about each client’s experience. She offered me a complimentary apothecary treatment. I took the offer and Kelly took care of me. She kindly offered knowledge about different hair treatments and took time to explain some questions I had about my hair. This salon cares about its clients and knows about hair.

I’m not quite sure if I want to rave about this place since I may just be doing myself a disservice by making it harder for me to get an appointment with LB!
But, she is simply amazing and it would be mean for me not to share her awesomeness:)
I’ll cut to the chase… just go see LB. She’s magical. I’m one of these complicating people who wants their hair to be perfect, but doesn’t want to put any effort into it (I know, rude). LB will give you a haircut which doesn’t require much maintenance. I also love that her haircuts last a long time! Even after 6 weeks, my hair still has shape. It’s amazing. She put highlights in my hair recently and I’ve gotten so many compliments.
She also has a killer sense of humor. Recommend this hair salon and LB 100%.

I just got my haircut done by Meg. Long story short, she knew exactly what I wanted! Im so happy with my hair! She took her time and really wanted me to love my haircut. Definitely worth the money and will sooooooo be coming back!

I had my hair cut with Kelly recently, and it might just be one of the best haircuts I’ve ever gotten. Kelly customized the cut for my hair type (random messy waves/​curls) and I love how it turned out! She creatively used thinning shears to add dimension to the cut without actually reducing my hair volume (and believe you me, I was terrified of those things when she brought them out).
An added bonus — haircut pricing includes a blowout (coming from NYC, this wasn’t usually the case). I left the salon felling like Bey #girlsruntheworld

I have serious phobias when it comes to anyone touching my hair and I have had some less than stellar experiences in Philly. My friend recommended Mirror & Mantel so I called and book an appointment with LB. When I arrived at the salon, I immediately loved the «homey» atmosphere and the friendliness of all the staff. This salon makes you feel relaxed and does not have that caddy hair salon vibe that many others do.
LB was amazing! She helped me decide what would look best with both my cut and color. I had very long hair but I felt very comfortable letting her cut a lot of it off and it turned out great. She also did an awesome job with my bayalage and color. esp considering she had to fix remnants of the botched job from a previous salon.
I would 100% recommend this salon to any and everyone. LB and all of the staff were great and this truly was the best salon experience I have had in a VERY long time.

I’ve been here three times for cuts and colors. Honestly they do a great job. As someone who maybe gets my hair cut about twice a year (its bad!) the cuts I’ve gotten here have grown out so well! It’s what’s inspired me to start going more often as I love the layers and shape I’ve gotten each time. It’s nice to have a cut look great when you walk out and still look great months later and three inches longer.

Before I moved to DC, LB worked her magic on my hair for almost 2 years. I loved her, and she (and Mirror and Mantel in general!) is one of the reasons I was sad to move away from Philly. She could cut layers into my hair that would last me almost 6 months — my last cut from her got me compliments about 4 months out from my previous haircut, and 3 weeks prior to my next one.
Before I moved, I got married (woo!). LB did my hair, and it was gorgeous (see pic I’m going to add here momentarily). She spent a lot of time with me at my appointment prior to the big day, and she carefully listened to what I wanted. She created the style, I loved it, and then she recreated it perfectly on the day of the wedding. My bridesmaids all loved their cuts too — Katie and Cecily made my ladies look fabulous.
We looked incredible, but I also have to give a shout out to Katie for the atmosphere and the coffee. She let me bring in a big urn from Rival Bros. down the street, and she even let us leave it there so a Rival Bros. barista could pick it up at the end of the day. I really appreciated her courtesy and I really miss this salon. It is well worth every penny!

Bottom line: I came home and cried for an hour — I’ve never reacted to a haircut like that.
My previous stylist is across the country, so I went to see LB after all the positive Unilocal reviews. I had not cut my hair in quite some time and was excited for a much needed change. I gave her a range of hair to cut off (6 – 14 inches) and figured for $ 65 that would buy me a pretty great cut.
Wrong-​o. She cut off 11 inches and left me with a super boring, bland hair cut that looks like a grown out bob. When she asked how I like it and I said it was bland, her response was «there’s only so much you can do with medium-​length hair». Not sure why she cut it that length then. I told my husband that response when I came home and he said «That’s probably all she could do, she clearly doesn’t have the skills your last stylist had.» So I guess that’s where my grievance lies. She charges $ 65 for a haircut that should cost about $ 25. She cut off 11 inches to give me a grown out bob. I’ve gone from long to short before and loved it, so that’s not the issue. I probably could have gone to Great Clips for this cut :(

I was blown away by what a great job these ladies did with the bridal party I came here with a few weeks ago. They managed to get 4 bridesmaids and the bride in and out within about an hour and a half, and everyone’s hair looked fantastic. I felt like a combination of Brigitte Bardot and an Alabama beauty queen, all height and volume yet sophisticated and classy.
My hair is only shoulder-​length and I was convinced she must have put some filler pieces in there to achieve the complex knot-​work she created in the back, but when I took my hair down later that night it turned out she did her magic with nothing but my actual hair (and 33 bobbypins!). It held up beautifully all day and night, even though we did our photo session outside on a hot and humid day. Katie, the owner of the salon, did my hair and the bride’s, which looked absolutely stunning.
The entire bridal party looked elegant and feminine and there wasn’t an ounce of disappointment in the whole bunch. I will absolutely come here again when I want a fancy up-​do.

I have a confession: My haircuts usually cost $ 17 and last no longer than 20 minutes at a place that doesn’t take appointments. I’ve had long hair for several years and for a trim, it worked. The other day as hair stuck to my neck, face, and arms in the hot summer sun I had a hair-​phiphany; I need 6 inches cut off my hair immediately.
Having recently moved to Philly I turned to Unilocal for some guidance in finding a salon. I thought «I’m cutting off significant length so I need someone that knows what they’re doing.» The first salon I called, located a block from my house, didn’t pick up the phone during their business hours– annoying. Next I called Mirror and Mantel, not only did they answer but Amy booked me for an appointment next day (!) with LB.
I strolled into the salon a few minutes before my appointment and was struck by how cute and chic it was. I was greeted and offered a drink as I waited just a few minutes for LB. She brought me to her chair and we discussed what I wanted to do. I showed some pictures explained some concerns (need volume, low maintenance style) and she got me. LB washed my hair with some good smelling product then chatted me up as she did her magic, cutting hair wet, dry, sideways, straight, blow drying. I was there for a hour and she really took her time to make sure it looked great. She also explained what I can do to get more volume at home. End result: I’m incredibly happy with my hair, my experience, and this salon.
The haircut was $ 65, the volumizing mousse that smelled too good to leave behind was another $ 26. This was a welcoming, cozy salon with no pretentiousness or snootiness. I’ve been cheating myself all these years and will be back for more pampering in the future.
