Mark Watkins, DO

As a Doctor he is fine but getting prescriptions is a major hassle, they don’t call back or follow up. Not very organized, certainly can improve.

Have never had a problem getting an appointment and never waited more than 15min — usually less than that. Staff is all friendly and as long as you are not a pompous ass, I am thinking they will be just as nice to you. I could not see Dr Mark for years because of plan change then moving — but back in the area and am happy to have the opportunity for him to be my PCP. Calls me on a Saturday to give me blood work. Takes time to talk to me. And we can share a joke.

Fine doctor but hard to get test results back. Incompetent office staff. As I was writing this, a mouse darted across the floor of the waiting room. Had to take off work for this appointment and so far have been waiting 35 mins past appointment time.

The office gave me an appointment for 1:15 and would not let me make one earlier in order not to miss work, otherwise, they said, it would be months for another one. I called out from work to go. They also told me to come in earlier to fill out paper work which I did. I discovered they booked someone at the same time for Dr Watkins and there was another man right behind me. After 45 minutes I left to call 800-​JEFFNOW for another doctor. How not to make a good first impression.

I’ve seen Dr. Watkins as a primary care doc for over 20 years, since I was 19 years old. I’ve seen other doctors and I’ve worked in health care including as a non — medical tech in one of the nation’s busiest Emergency Rooms. I’ve never found a SMARTER physician, let alone one who has such an incredible bed side manner. Dr. Watkins is so insightful and LISTENS to his patients. I’ve been very fortunate to have this guy take care of me, and of you have the chance for him to be your doc, take it! The only downside is his popularity which can sometimes make it hard to get an appointment on the fly.

Not a family practice. No humans under 18 years of age will be seen

I initially had chosen Dr. Watkins for geographical conveinence, but Dr. Watkins has turned out to be a great choice on his merits. His secretary is very friendly, which is a refreshing change from a lot of the medical staff that I have dealt with in other offices. The wait to be seen is never more than 15 minutes, and I have found that it is not difficult to secure an appointment within a reasonable time. I have also been treated by Rebecca Calder, who is also very good. She shares a bit of Dr. Watkins’ sarcastic, yet friendly mannerisms. Both seem to genuinely care about their patients.
As a straight male, I have never felt uncomfortable during any of my many visits to this office. It seems that this office is good for folks of all sexual orientations.

I always thought that one of the things you sacrifice with city living is receiving personal care from your primary physician. For the past few year I’d been going to the Jefferson Community Medicine Center whenever I needed a prescription or wasn’t feeling well, never seeing the same person twice and usually even the follow up appointments were with someone new.
Long story short, my father had received atrocious and frankly shameful treatment from Jefferson that would eventually lead to his untimely passing away and although it was in a different department I really just wanted nothing to do with Jeff ever again. I figured instead of looking on my insurance website for a PCP why not try Unilocal since I use it for everything else which led me to Triangle Medical and Dr. Watkins.
From the jump I could tell Dr. Watkins was different, he took the time to listen to me, ask me questions, and actually took my concerns into consideration. I’ve been seeing him for almost a year and we have uncovered several health issues that could greatly affect me down the road and have actively made a plan to get them taken care of. Having complete faith in a physician was something I never thought I’d feel after what happened to my father but the level of comfort and confidence I have with Dr. Watkins really gives me a feeling of security.
The Triangle Medical office is on 10^th St. right by Cheu Noodle Bar (which is also a huge bonus if your hungry post appointment). The waiting room is small but comfortable and I’ve always been able to get an appointment within a couple days of calling which is nice. Yesterday I was on the phone with my insurance company and they were trying to figure out the medical code for a CAT scan I needed so they called the office. When the lady came back on with me she said she was shocked she was actually able to speak with Dr. Watkins and that he was the nicest doctor she’d ever spoken with.
I’m straight and before I came here someone at my gym said they thought Triangle was geared more towards the LGBT community. To my knowledge despite a heightened sense of style and killer dance moves, gay and straight men are genetically the same, get sick, and require the care of a compitent physician. I’ve referred my gay friends here just a much as my straight friends.
I really feel fortunate I found Dr. Watkins and am grateful for the part he’s playing in my well-​being.

This man saved my life. Seriously. I’ve been HIV+ for 20+ years and despite it all he’s kept me going. Please give Mark a chance, he’ll change your life!

After reading all the great reviews, I so badly wanted to support this local LGBT doctor, but I have had nothing but poor experiences. Mark is a really nice guy, seems to show genuine interest in patients, and makes you feel comfortable in the office, but the post-​visit service is horrible.
I had some simple blood tests done and I still can’t get a call back two months later. I’ve called his office every week, left messages, and down right begged for a call… nothing. I sent a letter to have my medical records mailed to me, and asked for a response again and still received nothing. Really frustrating, time consuming, experience that no one should go through.

I have been a patient for over 15 years and Dr. Watkins is the best. Always listens to everything you say and has a great sense of humor. He also takes a personal interest in his patients. The PAs that he has are also incredibly competent and demonstrate same level of interest and care. I can, without any reservations, recommend Dr. Watkins as an exceptional health care provider.

I’m a fairly new patient and I have been so pleased with Dr. Watkins… he is totally down to Earth, has a sense of humor, easy to talk to, never seems rushed, and actually takes the time to LISTEN to what i’m saying. He has squeezed me in at the very last minute, and STILL didn’t rush me out without making sure that we covered everything. I have 100% confidence in his technical and medical knowledge, and I actually like the fact that he often has medical students in the office seeing patients… this speaks to the trust that the local med schools have in his abilities, and I also feel that someone who teaches is, at the same time, constantly learning.
Whenever I’ve needed blood work, he doesn’t send me to a lab… he takes the blood right then and there (which is good because, in the past, doctors have given me scripts for blood work, but I’d never go).
In the past, I’ve had to go back twice in one week and he made sure that I wasn’t charged for the follow up visit… maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think every doctor would be so considerate.
In a nutshell, I’ve been so happy with Dr. Watkins that I felt compelled to write a review here on Unilocal!People DESERVE to have a doctor like Mark and in return, he deserves the business.

Picked randomly from my insurance company’s list due to location, I’ve been seeing Dr. Mark for about 4 years now and I’ve never had a bad experience! Sometimes it’s funny having the med students there, as they get really excited if you have something they haven’t seen before. But I’ve never felt uncomfortable with him. The receptionist ladies can be intimidating when you’re sick, but I’ve never been in a doctor’s office where they’re not!

I’d have to guess that the less-​than-​positive experiences posted here are the exceptions. I have had nothing but positive experiences with Dr. Watkins and his entire staff. Mark has a great sense of humor and a genuine concern. His staff has been equally attentive and empathetic.
I do think that an investment in a sound-​proof glass on the «office/​reception» area would be worthwhile as a way of ensuring more privacy, especially on phone calls where personal matters of patients are discussed.

«Call the office in a week for the test results» he says. For a MONTH I try calling, leaving message after message, to which he never responds. Eventually I’m able to reach the receptionist who relays the doctor’s remarks (doctor yelling in the background without even checking my file). Very subpar follow-​up for what had actually been an okay experience. I’d like to give him a better score but whatever goodwill he created was squandered during the month I spent waiting for a response.

Does not accept Aetna if you on medicaid. They do not tell you that until you show up and embarrass you in front of all the other patients. Desk lady was rude and mean. Even if you have insurance you should go somewhere else. Terrible experience.

Dr. Mark is as good as it gets! He is a wonderful physician with an open and caring approach. He truly takes care of me and my partner. We are able to be completely open and honest with him about our needs and expectations and Dr. Mark pulls no punches and takes no chances. He is really on the ball!

I’ve been seeing Mark and John DelRossi (PA at Triangle Medical) for close to 15 years now. I love my doctor. As a gay man, when I first moved to Philly, I wanted to have a doctor that I felt comfortable talking about any issue that came up medically. I’ve never had to make excuses or hide my sexuality and often Mark’s sense of humor has helped me to not take any of my medical issues so seriously that it affects my well-​being. While I’m not HIV+, they do specialize in working with people with the virus. I have referred several friends who are positive and have only received back rave reviews. While I know a lot of the LGBT community already knows about Mark, I think he would be a great doctor for straight people as well.

Mark has been my general physician for the past six years and has taken great care of me. He also now sees my brother, mother, and a couple of my friends and clients. I feel comfortable going over any health concerns I am having and he usually remembers to follow up on past issues. Expect to been seen first by which ever intern they have at their office before either seeing Mark or his business partner, John DelRossi. John has past experience at a GYN clinic so he is familiar with all the girl issues. John and Mark are both gay and they carry special medical designations for HIV so they do see a fair number of HIV patients and there is HIV literature around the office. If any of you makes you uncomfortable this isn’t the right practitioner for you. Whenever I have had any sort of health issue they have given me an appointment within 24 hours of my call. They are also great about helping you out with some samples if you don’t have prescription benefits.
