Making It Sew

I can’t say enough about Carol and the ladies at Making it Sewing!
My 14 year old daughter got a sewing machine for her birthday. I promptly signed her up for classes at Making it Sew! So glad I did. My daughter had a great time. She made shorts and is now working on a bag. They are patient with her as a beginner and the instruction was basic enough that she could do it! She learned a lot. I am so glad I discovered Making It Sew!
Classes are very affordable. They have something almost every night of the week and on Saturdays. My daughter only needed to bring her sewing machine– they had fabric, patterns, and everything else she needed. They do sell machines *should you not have one. Even though we moved out of the area — we will continue to take lessons with Carol and the ladies at Making it Sewing!

I wasn’t impressed with the intro to sewing class. The instructor had other classes going on at the same time so she wasn’t really focused on us. I didn’t feel like I was getting any good hands on instruction. She gave us pieces of fabric to sew and it wasn’t until midway through that I realized we were making a pillowcase. It would be nice if the instructor had a basic 1 page sheet with sewing terms and with instructions for making the pillowcase. It was a waste of $ 35 dollars IMO. I wouldn’t go back and wouldn’t recommend this place to others.

I attended classes at Making for about 4 years before I had my son (baby + 30 commute each way does not equal happy people). I learned gobs from the teachers there and have more than enough clothes that I MADE, including a coat and suits, which get me compliments each time I wear them.
New owner Carol brings such a lightness and humor to her work that I loved going just to hang out. I also took classes in knitting with Sheri and learned a lot from her, too.
Once I can commit an evening to going again, I definitely will.

I disagree with the previous reviewer. I’ve been at this place off and on, and I found the staff extremely friendly, patient and helpful. Their lessons are also very EXTREMELY affordable as well. Other places charged an upload of money to do a project, most speciifically – a designated single project; whereas this place foster creativity on ones’ desired individal project. There are pros and cons to that idea of a group single project. The significant con is that not every individual fits well to a assigned designated outfit. The pro is that yes, you may have learn how to sew the item, but will you love it? Making it Sewing allows you to individually choose an outfit you want to make. As IN ANY school, you get what you put into it. Meaning, for me, Making it Sewing allows the person to actually take in information, and the learner goes with it, and develops their own way to figuring out how to do other projects by the teachers’ guidance. Now, I understand that individuals are individuals, but for me, this place works great. Sometimes not having someone do the work for you helps you think about other avenues on accomplishing the tasks. So far, for me, this place has allowed me to alter old clothes and make them new again. I’ve also made outfits by myself at home. I highly recommend this place. Do not be intimidated by the prospect of not getting learning fast enough. Sewing is a process. It really is. The more experienced you are, the more apt you are to choosing other «difficult» projects to make, or to figure out, and also, to reading and understanding the written instructions of a tablet. But sometimes you don’t need to read the instructions because more often than not, you intuitively will know how an outfits comes together, and this comes with patience and just sewing. The other significant reason why this place is great is the staff. The staff are highly experienced. They have been sewing for years. You want someone reliable to figuring out the making of a design to the outfit will fit you individually. And the staff does this, in my opinion, especially for me.

I went here a few years back because in this area there was this place and JoAnns. Their prices aren’t horrible but I hate to say it– you do not get what you pay for. They take your money and heavily coach you through an initial project. They do not do teaching so much as they simply do it for you. After your first project, the instructors breeze by and rarely come over unless you call them over for help. If you do not know anything about sewing don’t count on learning anything. I left there being no better at sewing than when I left. Months of paying for classes and a sewing machine down the drain. I suggest asking people you know or craigslist. This place was a HUGE waste of money.
