J Squared Salon

When researching salons online I found JSquared and based on the reviews I thought I’d give them a shot. I am so happy I did! The salon was cozy, modern and the stylists were friendly and skilled. Kristina was my stylist and she did an amazing job keeping the length of my hair which was important but giving me a healthy cut. And it was only $ 25!
I’m a huge fan!

Had to change hairdressers so I took a chance on Heather due to all the good reviews for J2 on Unilocal.She totally understood where the last hairdresser went wrong and gave me a pretty cute haircut considering the length — there wasn’t a whole lot to work with. Together we developed a plan to grow my hair long again, in style. I’m very happy. The salon is right in my neighborhood and all the staff seem friendly, light-​hearted and polite.

I switched salons because I was trying to find one closer to my house. So glad I found J Squared, which is tucked right off of East Passyunk.
Heather did an amazing job with some light color correction to an ombré and a medium-​length bob cut. Before I even finished explaining the cut I wanted, she had pictures of exactly what she was thinking pulled up on her phone. They were spot on. Everything came out great, I definitely recommend her! Also, the prices are hard to beat, just $ 40 for a haircut.

I went for a trim and a color correction. What I got was 3 inches hacked off my hair and worse color (which I didn’t think possible) than I already had. Heather told me my haircut was uneven and I agreed. What I didn’t agree to was her next step which was cutting about 3 inches off my hair. Even after I repeatedly told her I wear my hair in ponytail all the time. She assured me that I would still be able to make a ponytail. Well that’s true if a ½ inch numb with most of your hair falling out is your idea of a ponytail! The color is horrific it’s all stripes of blonde bleeding into this super dark brown. The hair in the back and front are 2 totally different shades that do not blend!!! The back of my hair is so uneven I had to go back the next day much to my dismay for heather to remotely make it look a bit presentable!!! (Look at the pic I posted) Only a week ago my hair was smooth and manageable now it’s a unruly, uneven mess!!! I had i consultation today to try to fix heathers doings and it’s going to be around 700 $ that’s right 700 $!!! So bottom line STAY OUT OF HER CHAIR!!! I gave her 1 star because I had to!

I’ve been going to Heather for years now, following her from Fringe to J-​Squared, and would recommend her to anyone (especially curly hair folks, and for fun short cuts). I went in yesterday after not having a year cut for over 6 months+ and had also recently experimented with Moroccan oil which I could not get out of my hair for over a week. My hair, which once was healthy and very curly, was dead and damaged at the ends, had a lackluster wave, and a ton of residual oil in the roots. I walked out a changed woman! She not only removed the oil from my hair with ease, but gave me back my curls. Love love love this salon and Heather… also such a great price!

I had my first haircut and color @ J Squared Salon and my haircut and color turned out Great! It was with Heather and she immediately gave me some really good suggestions and I’m so glad I listened to her because my haircut & çolor came out Terrific. Plus the shop was so welcoming, warm and friendly. Very down to earth and I felt like I had been going there for some time. I highly recommend this hair salon and Heather and I’m going again for sure. Yeah, I found a great stylist which is not so easy to find as most of you probably know!

An Aveda salon with a very pleasant atmosphere and super friendly staff. Like another reviewer stated, not stuffy or pretentious at all.
And I can’t rave enough about Heather! The woman is amazing! Gave me the best haircut ever and I absolutely love the color.

I followed Heather to J-​Squared from her former salon because she’s one of the few stylists who gives me the hair cut I want (even if at first I didn’t know exactly how to describe it). She’s that good. She’s always up for doing something different with hair and she is very skilled so she can do the unique style you want. Her color work is lovely. She’s unpretentious, down-​to-​earth, and funny, but if you’re not up for chatting, that’s okay with her too. I love the new J-​Squared salon and am so glad Heather didn’t go far from Passyunk! Side note, this is a small thing, but I like that Heather does clients’ hair washing on her own. I rather give her the full tip!

Heather does my hair in a way that makes me feel beautiful! I followed her from her previous salon. The prices are unbelievably low for the cuts and colors I get from Heather. I had bad experiences at Juju salon, in which I paid 200 dollars to not be able to see my blonde highlights but Heather really listens and made me look just as I wanted. She cut my boyfriend’s hair too and it looks amazing. Fringe made a mistake in letting her go.

I came here 3 months ago, and I suddenly realize that I haven’t written J Squared a stellar review yet after my first amazing visit (soon to be another).
First, this salon is just awesome! The people are warm and genuinely friendly. It feels like your neighborhood hair salon. What’s not to love about that?!
Second, where there is a good salon, there are good stylists. Enter Heather — she is the best, and I take it there is more from where that came. She spent time with me looking through my pinterest ideas and immediately understood what I wanted and how to fix the *ahem* problem (understatement) from my last haircut. Plus, we discussed how I style my hair, texture, etc, all of which she already knew with a few fingers through my hair.
After my last short haircut fiasco (see other reviews), Heather made me look like myself again. She understood my hair the way Ryan Gosling totally understands every girl ;). And my cut only cost me $ 35 (before tip!).
After almost a year in Philly, I have finally found my salon, and I am going back as soon as possible!

If you’re waffling about J Squared, I say – go for it!
I was looking for a change from my hip length boring hair. I’m a little picky – wanted something sort of interesting but not super trendy, while remaining a little sophisticated. I arranged an appointment with Heather, and I highly recommend her. She’s very professional and really listens to what you want, but also was helpful when I wanted to know what would actually work for my hair.
All I wanted was some layers and long wispy bangs, and I was worried that I would just look like I had generic layered hair and feel boring. But I can assure that was not the case. Heather cut some amazing layers into my hair, and seriously, my wispy bangs are –exactly– what I wanted. I left with a haircut that was interesting, simple, while remaining sophisticated. Exactly what I’ve been hoping for.
My hair is pretty long and thick, but the total came out very reasonable. Seriously awesome.
In short, I really, really, recommend J Squared, and am definitely returning for my next trim!

Have had my hair styled by Jennifer (one of the owners) a couple of times now and have never been disappointed. I also take my sons here (ages 10 and 12) and they’ve been cut by some of the others on staff. Everyone here is so friendly and nice.
I’m new to the neighborhood and I am very fortunate to have found my new hairdresser the first time out. I suspect we’ll be going here for quite a long time.

Heather Garden is the bomb. The last time I consistently got my haircut was when I was 13 years old. Until I met Heather. First at Fringe, but as soon as I found out that Heather moved to J Squared, I tracked her down. She always gives me a great haircut and is an all around good person. The salon itself and the other stylists are nice. Highly recommended.

Being a guy I usually go to a barber or a lower-​end salon — there are plenty in the neighborhood but I always left a little underwhelmed after getting a haircut at one of these places.
I wanted a real holistic, thorough haircut and an honest view on what would work for me. I got both with Heather. For guys: she used to work in a Rockabilly Babrber joint, so she is very familiar with doing guys’ hair. She is talented and very cool as well. The price is very fair too for a guy’s cut. Believe me, the cut will be a level above what you are getting currently. Highly recommend.

I cannot recommend Heather enough, I even followed her from her old salon. She is friendly, laid back, and really listens to you — pretty much exactly what I want in a stylist. She recently cut about 7 inches of my hair and I’ve never been so happy with a haircut! I love it. She also colors my hair (ombré) and i’ve received a ton of positive feedback about it looking natural but still noticeable.
Also, the salon itself is very nice and everyone who works there is friendly and welcoming!

I finally feel like myself again after Heather cut my hair. She takes time to ask questions and really understand what look you’re going for. Even though it was my first time getting a cut with her she did not play it safe and give me the bare mimimum boring style.
Finding a good hair stylist is like finding a good relationship. You try salons, it isn’t really right but you go a few times, then you realize it’s not for you. WIth Heather I knew it was right after the first visit.
This lady is cool and interesting and will give you an awesome haircut.
The salon itself is nice, bright, and has a nice ambiance. The Aveda products are delicious. 5 stars!

I stumbled upon J squared from Unilocal,after I learned of my hairdresser from the salon I last went to unexpectedly leaving. I wanted to stay in the E. Passyunk hood, and when I read the reviews on J, it all sounded super. Then I saw that it’s an Aveda salon, and I got all weak in the knees. Ohhhhh that sweet sweet shampure scent! Heaven. So I figured, this must be a sign. I think I was meant to go to this salon all along. And the prices are super agreeable. Like, really super agreeable.
The salon itself is very cute and modern. I adore the salon chairs. The staff is all very welcoming and down to earth. Jenn Marasa (one half of the J Squared– hence the name– the other partner is also a Jennifer) cut my hair. She was super nice and helpful, and just easy to talk to. After cutting my hair, she blew out my hair and did amazing things to the volume. So much life pumped into my normally impossibly straight hair.
I really liked this place, and will definitely be going back. I am sure come spring their business will be super duper booming, so get in now while you can!

Everything about my recent experience at J Squared salon was one word: AWESOME!
I have been the victim of some of the worst haircuts, colors, customer service (or combination thereof) at local salons throughout Philadelphia since I moved here 8 years ago. After my most recent train wreck, I have been desperately searching for a stylist who was looking to build a relationship with me as much as I was with them.
I can tell you with astounding confidence I have found it at J Squared Salon!
Jen C. (blonde hair) is co-​owner of the Salon and absolutely impressed me with her professionalism, friendly demeanor, and desire to help me achieve exactly what I was looking for. My hair has been just about every shade of red, black, and brown over the last 15 years but I have to say I have never been happier with the color than I was when I left yesterday. WOWZA! Aveda products and her expertise made all the difference!
The cut was awesome, too. The last girl cut off WAY too much and left me with no shape to speak of so I was nervous to get in the chair and loose any more hair. Jen eased all my anxieties. She trimmed off just enough, gave me the shape and angles I needed, and left me feeling completely rejuvenated. Oh yea, and the total for this 2 hour special treatment? $ 85.00!!! (Did I mention she is the co-​owner/​lead stylist? Amazing!)
Some other notes worth mentioning:
The Salon is incredibly clean and really stylish. They offer coffee, tea, water, etc. to all guests while they wait (a nice touch!). The soundtrack they have playing was my least favorite part of the experience – but only because it’s a little schizophrenic… ranging from rap to oldies to christmas music to pop – all within 5 minutes. Not a big deal but some of it was a little explicit!
Lastly, I want to mention that they just hired Heather, a stylist who actually gave me a GREAT haircut in the past (she used to be at Fringe but I stopped going there because the atmosphere and the other employees made me feel really uncomfortable). When I saw her this furthered my excitement to go to this salon because although I will be loyal to Jen it is nice to know that if she wasn’t available for some reason that I would be in good hands with Heather!
