Brotherly Grub

Tried Brotherly Grub on whim. Nice friendly service. Ordered the Pulled Pork fries and roast pork w/​peppers.
Food was averagely good — didn’t really make me think I was having a unique experience. The roll for the roast pork got wet/​soggy within 5 minutes. Nothing negative about these folks.

The Brotherly Grub boys man a silver food truck that’s recently been encamped on a regular basis slightly east of Temple University, and right outside the offices of Philadelphia Gas Works’ headquarters, at the corner of Montgomery Ave and North Ninth Street in North Philly. Sure, Temple has some great street food trucks going for it, and many of the PGW employees, including me, take the stroll up Montgomery regularly to enjoy that food. But this recent addition to the pantheon of delectable cooking has made a long walk unnecessary.
Every weekday, starting around 7 am or so, the boys power up their generator and craft gourmet takes on the traditional egg sandwich, which my colleagues rave about. I see that pancakes are also on the menu, and the chef of the crew is not shy about regularly trying new things to go along with workingman’s staple of hearty egg sandwiches. They even offer a gourmet burger at breakfast time.
I’m not really an egg guy, but I enjoy barbeque, and lunch is one of my 4 favorite meals of the day, so I finally moseyed on over to the truck this afternoon. Pulled pork was my target, as three different colleagues had raved about it thus far. Their classic pulled pork was subjected to a slight twist, in that they decided to infuse it with Dr. Pepper. They heated it to order on a cooktop, with that special sauce, sweet barbeque and Dr. Pepper, I was told, and melted in cheddar cheese; then piled a hefty amount onto a giant round brioche bun.
What was sticker shock to me might be a bargain to you: at least 10 ounces, probably closer to a pound, of pulled pork on a sandwich cost under $ 8. I sprung for the hand-​sliced French fries as well, which were the best fries I’ve had in a while, for $ 2 if you buy them with the sandwich. Other offerings include a variety of 8 ounce burgers with interesting toppings, roast pork sandwiches, and other barbeque fare. The guy waiting with me for his lunch had raved about their fresh and plentiful salad as well, so I guess I’ll give that a shot soon when my bi-​monthly diet starts.
I ended up splitting the tangy and delicious sandwich with a colleague. I’m regretting giving half away, even though my half a sandwich and fries more than filled me up — in the late afternoon as I write this, I’d love to nosh on some of those delicious pulled pork leftovers right now.
The boys advise me that they show up occasionally at food truck rodeos and concerts, so keep an eye out. But during the week, catch them near PGW for some very memorable food!
