Associated & Philmont Heating & Air Conditioning

I have a very very old HVAC heating system — almost 50 years old (1964) — that runs well so I haven’t replaced it. This winter it stopped working and I called Philmont. The repair man said he had never worked on a unit that old, or with the configuration it had — but he figured out what the problem was and showed me — it was actually pretty simple and I should have figured it out myself since I’m pretty handy, but I hadn’t.
Of course didn’t have the needed part with him but he said he would try to find one and return, but it might take a few days depending how hard it would be to locate. Since it was a very simple problem (broken belt), I figured I could do it myself (and in fact was able to locate the replacement belt and fix it myself).
I told him thanks for the service call and instructions, and how much was the service call charge. He said that since he hadn’t fixed the problem, there was no charge. I explained that he had made the trip to my house, and shown me how to fix it, and that was just as good, and insisted on paying at least a service call fee. After arguing a bit about that, he finally quoted me a charge (which was so low that I bet was half of a standard service call fee) — but its 6 months later and they never deposited my check. I guess they have very high standards about what they feel they should receive payment for.
So I can say that they are helpful, knowledgable, flexible, certainly decent and ethical, and take pride in their work. Hopefully my HVAC system will last a while longer, but the next time it does need service (or when it is time to replace the system), I will call them.
