9th Street Family Dentistry

Had a great experience at 9^th Street Family Dentistry today. I don’t have dental insurance, and haven’t been to the dentist in 7 years, so I was expecting it to be really tough experience, but that wasn’t the case at all. Dr. Fan and staff were super-​friendly and accommodating. I was rightfully scolded for never flossing, for going so long between dental visits, and for brushing my teeth too hard – but I wasn’t made to feel like an ignoramus or degenerate, which was my fear. The price was fantastic – a special deal for cleaning, basic x-​rays, etc for folks like me without insurance. Dr. Fan didn’t rush, and took plenty of time to walk me through all of the aspects of my dental health: reminders of how not to brush too hard and an explanation of why it’s a problem and an introduction to different types of night-​guards (because I grind my teeth, on top of the other things I do wrong – this is one I do unconsciously. Thanks, brain).
After cautioning me about my «ticking time-​bomb» (his words) wisdom teeth, Dr. Fan recommended I get a 3D x-​ray in his office and then consult with an oral surgeon, etc, rather than sending me straight to the surgeon because he knew they’d charge me more for an out of pocket x-​ray than he would (I paid $ 100 for this x-​ray and am supposed to get the image in an email, which is nice).
All in all, a really pleasant experience as far as going to the dentist for the first time in 7 years goes. Oh – and no real cavities to speak of, so yay for me.

Due to a misunderstanding of their location, I arrived almost a half-​hour late to my cleaning appointment. So embarrassing! Nevertheless, I didn’t get so much as the hint of a scold – which I would have deserved – from the receptionist or anyone in the office.
Dr. Fan and his hygienist were fast-​but-​thorough. They worked diligently to make up for lost time.
My oral hygiene is better-​than-​average but far from perfect. Neither Dr. Fan nor the hygienist tried to invent problems to «upsell» me on unnecessary, expensive procedures. They just did a thorough job with my cleaning and my teeth felt fantastic for days after.
Finally, I paid out-​of-​pocket. Their charge for the cleaning was less than ¹⁄₃ of what other dentists would have charged. (I checked.) That’s a pretty amazing bargain. I hope other people hear about Dr. Fan so they can finally get their long-​delayed dental work done…

I also decided to try 9^th Street Family Dentistry after reading the incredible Unilocal!reviews. My previous dentist wasn’t very accommodating as far as scheduling appointments and returning phone calls was concerned…
At first I wasn’t sure about Dr. Fan — seemed very serious and somewhat stern — but eventually he did warm up and was a very friendly guy. I am also under the impression that he truly cares about your teeth.
He told me I have two very very small cavities (which after four years without seeing a dentist is «impressive») but that we didn’t need to act — just continue taking care of my teeth.
Also, his dental hygienist was not in the office that day and he cleaned my teeth himself. First time the actual DDM has ever cleaned my teeth and he was gentle yet thorough. I will continue to see Dr. Fan. Also, I used the Unilocal certificate (as I have no dental coverage) and got an exam, x-​rays, and a teeth cleaning for $ 100.

I’ve since found out that Dr. Fan misdiagnosed several issues. Very concerning and wouldn’t use again after a similar mistake was made with a friend. Look elsewhere?

Very straight-​forward with pricing, which is reasonable and he is very good at what he does. I have not one complaint about him. I would recommend to anyone.

If you have a fear of going to the dentist, this place will change everything you thought about going to the dentist. Dr. Fan is seriously so accommodating and very friendly.
I came here since it was the neighborhood dentist and saw the great reviews. I was a bit skeptical given a dentist having 5 star reviews on Unilocal but hey, why not?
I came in for an annual visit and I can see why people love Dr. Fan. Also prior to seeing Dr. Fan, my appointment was pushed back since he had a dental emergency patient prior to my appointment and their front desk gave me a courtesy call telling me to come in at a later time. I thought that was so thoughtful as I could have been waiting in their waiting room for an hour prior to being seen but luckily my day was flexible to accommodate.
The office is very clean and modern. The dental assistants were also very friendly that took my dental x-​rays and Dr Fan was in momentarily after that. Dr. Fan went through all my x-​rays and showed me if I had a cavity or not and also that I’m a heavy teeth grinder. He also went into details for dental prevention and how to make my oral health better. I felt he was very attentive and truly cared about my dental health. I don’t think you get that kind of service at another dental practice and I’d highly recommend him to anyone looking for a new dentist.
I love going to see him as I’m so intrigued on how my dental health improved from my first visit with him. I don’t think that’s a statement you throw around much!

I hadn’t been to the dentist in years and unfortunately I found out I had numerous cavities. A Center City dentist wanted to charge me over $ 1,000 to get them all filled, which is when I looked on Unilocal for a different dentist. I am so happy I found Dr. Fan! First off, he was very affordable and willing to work with me and my crappy insurance. Amy, the receptionist is very nice and sweet, and patiently explained all costs before any procedures were done.
My husband and I have spent a lot of time here over the past 2 months with dental work and I have so many positive things to say about Dr. Fan. He is very thorough and professional, making sure to spend time answering his patients’ questions and making them feel comfortable, which is so important for a nervous patient.
I feel that he really cares about his patients as people. Some examples… When my husband had pain after a procedure Dr. Fan found time in his busy schedule for him to come in that day and even stayed late to see him. He takes his time and I’ve never felt rushed. Even with giving Novacaine… he is very careful and gives a tiny bit, waits for it to get numb, then gives the rest so I don’t feel the needle so much, and then waits a good 10 minutes to get completely numb before starting the procedure.
I will continue to go here for my dental needs and would recommend this place to anyone. Everyone who works at the office is really friendly and welcoming. Dr. Fan also has a great sense of humor which makes going to the dentist almost enjoyable!

I needed a new dentist and picked Dr. Fan based off of Unilocal reviews and the location. I am so happy I Unilocal because it sure did steer me in the right direction. It was easy to make an appointment and they saw me right away. Dr. Fan is a great dentist. He is very thorough and really takes the time to carefully review your x-​rays with you and any dental issues or questions that you may have. I’ve been to a bunch of dentists and I’ve never felt that any have ever took the time that Dr. Fan took with me.
I’ve had family members tell me that I grind my teeth. Dr. Fan was the first dentist to pick this up. He showed me how my canine teeth were slightly worn down. So I came home and looked at photos from 7 years ago when I was 23 and yeah I can see a difference and it is from grinding.
Dr. Fan is very big on prevention and taking care of your teeth to avoid costly and unpleasant procedures down the line. And like others said, he is very gentle. The office and tools are also very clean. He is caring and everything you want in a dentist.

As someone who almost had a panic attack when walking into the office, I can’t say enough about how amazing Dr. Fan and his staff were during my recent visit. Dr. Fan took a lot of time explaining my options and making sure I was comfortable with everything that he was doing. Highly recommended.

Everyone here is so nice, all of the staff as well as Doctor Fan. He always tells me what’s going on so I can make an informed decision, and make sure that my oral hygiene routine is personally suited to my needs (and affordable for me as a student). Dr. Fan made a good recommendation for an oral surgeon (for wisdom teeth removal), too.
I’ve been going here for four years, and I’ve almost never had to wait past my appointment time, they are very punctual. It’s never been difficult to get an appointment.

I have to say visiting the dentist tends to bring me panic and after a horrid experience at another office I was scared. However, from my first phone call to set an appointment to my services today I am thrilled. Not only was everyone friendly, but they took the time to explain every step and price I was going to be charged. The dentist never pressured me into services and was very patient with all my inquires. I am thrilled to suggest this dental office to others. Even if you don not have insurance do not be afraid. I’ll be back for my followup shortly!

Dr. Fan is the best! I’ve been using him for several years and have recommend my friends to him. He explain in detail all the work he doing in your mouth. His staff are very accommodating. The place is clean and comfortable. I would recommend him to anyone, and HE DOES NOT HURT!

I was so afraid of going back to the dentist after a TERRIBLE experience at Rittenhouse that I almost cancelled my appointment with Dr. Fan in a panicked rage. I’m so glad I didn’t.
The office is very clean and everyone who worked there was so nice. SO nice! They have tv and magazines for your waiting pleasure. But, I didn’t have to wait long.
The tech or hygenist was so sweet and I had the least painful and mouth-​cut-​inducing x-​ray session I’ve literally ever had at the dentist. Dr. Fan was prompt and very friendly and warm. He sits down and gives you dental 101 and reviews your x-​rays with you, explaining what things are. Maybe people in other reviews weren’t listening when they said he said you had a lot of cavities. He pointed out potential problem areas that he would fill to prevent future issues and offered to do them if I wanted. No pressure, just the warning that if something feels bad to get back in there asap. He was extremely gentle and reassuring about everything he was doing.
I feel like I have a million dollar smile after leaving here. I wish every doctor could be as great as Dr. Fan. Going to the dentist is fun again. I even got a bag of goodies on my way out.

I made an appointment for a tooth that has been bothering me and I have been putting off for entirely too long. The office is clean, the staff is friendly, the staff let me know what my insurance covered before performing any procedures, Dr. Fan made my cavity quick and painless, and I was out the door before I knew it!
I’m really surprised anyone would have anything negative to say about Dr. Fan. I really can t ask for a better dentist visit than the one I just had… well maybe minus the cavity. I recommend this place to friends and family!

So I went to Dr. Fan when I first moved here and did not know nuthin’ ’bout ‘nuthin. My co-​worker suggested him to me as someone who would take our insurance policy, so I went to him when I had a terrible pain in my tooth.
Dr. Fan did a root canal on my tooth and put in a crown. Since then, I have had two other dentists say to me «Who put this crown in your mouth? It looks like it was made for someone else… it’s much too large and is irritating your gums». So now I have to pay for a second crown because the one he gave me doesn’t fit right.
Then I went in to my new dentist and he said that one of my old fillings was falling out because it had been poorly put in and now a new cavity was forming around it. Surprise! That first filling had been put in by Dr. Fan.
The worst blow for me was when I was discussing going to a new dentist at my new office and one of my co-​workers said «Well don’t go to Dr. Fan on 9^th st. I had never had any cavities in my life, and his nurse told me I had three. He came in and berated her for not finding the others… he said I had 5 cavities. I went to another dentist and he told me I had no cavities whatsoever». Surprise, surprise… Dr. Fan had told me the same thing! His nurse had told me I had 3 cavities and he had said she missed some and that I had 5! I’m now pretty convinced that he lied to me, gave me fillings on teeth that didn’t need them, that are now falling out and having to be replaced!
Bottom line; he’s a complete ripoff and a swindler. Do not use him as your dentist.

Dr. Fan is so awesome. I am deathly afraid of the dentist (needles especially!) and Dr. Fan is super gentle and really nice. Cindy and Amy (his staff) are really friendly and reassuring! I’m so glad I found this gem in my neighborhood!
