Rivertown Feed & Pet Country Store

The staff at Rivertown is SO HELPFUL. Went in today as I was having trouble adjusting my dog’s harness. Melissa was amazing and so very helpful. Grateful for the wonderful service!

We moved to Petaluma on July 1^st, 2014 and have been going to this store since pretty much day one. Back then, we only had dogs to feed, but now we have guinea pigs too and we’re able to get all of our animals almost everything they could ever need here. Except for cages. A good selection of cages would be a great improvement!
Dog food prices are really reasonable, and they carry a multitude of brands in a range of prices and qualities. We used to feed our dogs Diamond mostly, but because of Rivertown’s good prices, we’re able to feed them Taste of the Wild pretty often. They also have a great range of treats and toys for the dogs and since you can bring them in, they can pick what they want themselves! My dog Scarlet is big on tennis balls, rawhide, and the super long Outward Hound Invincibles snakes with a bunch of squeakers. My boyfriend’s dogs Love and Melody go straight for the cookies and bones and don’t care much for toys.
As for the guinea pigs, we buy their Oxbow pellets here, which is great because as far as we’re aware, no other stores in the area carry them. We also buy flakes/​slices of hay for them here which is under $ 10. Way cheaper and fresher than the stuff that comes in bags. We also have bought ceramic food bowls, water bottles, and chew toys for them here with much success. We used to buy our bedding here too, but we just switched to fleece, so sadly that is one thing we will not be in for anymore.
I love this store so much, I should really try to get a job here. It’s a great place. If I had horses and chickens, I’d get all of their stuff here too. There’s always parking on the side or in the lot. Staff are friendly and helpful. And I love the customer card!

Alright, since I have written my other review, I have been back at least three or four times. I went by myself once, and with my fiancé twice at least. I will say that when I approached the employees, they were very kind to me. They answered my questions without attitude, and smiled while doing it. There is one girl with curlish/​wavy brown hair, I think around eighteen to early twenties who has been incredibly helpful to me. I am interested in purchasing a bunny, and she gave me a lot of great answers and tips. I will definately be back!

HUGE selection and friendly staff to help you find what you need.

Great place, great service, great prices! Staff always friendly and helpful. Have been coming here for over 20 years through fires and changes. Wish it was closer, but worth the drive from Marin!

My husband I just moved here from the South Bay and I am officially obsessed! I love the fact that it is locally owned and their staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I will be getting all of our dog food and supplies at Rivertown from here on out!

We just moved to petaluma and we were looking for a new place to buy our pet supplies. We used to get our dog food at pet food express and dog treats at petco. We found this place and can get everything we need in one stop. The store is nice, staff is friendly and everything is considerably cheaper than the big box pet stores

We’ve done business with Rivertown for over 10 years and are very happy. We have 3 chickens, several house rabbits, a dog and my wife likes to feed the wild birds. So we visit Rivertown at least once every two weeks. They have a good selection, fair prices and their staff is courteous and helpful.

I was very happy with this place due to the amount of crickets they would order me (which came in an enclosed box) and the price they gave. However; this last Wednesday my crickets arrived and due to unforeseen circumstances I was unable to drive over there immediately from Napa and pick up my crickets. 2 days after they arrived a gentlemen called me and reminded me that my crickets had been in the box for 2 days and wanted to know when I was coming. Granted, wherever these crickets come from they do put food in the box. However there is no water, so, with knowing that I asked the man if he could put my crickets in with the other crickets and I will come get 500 crickets from them Saturday. He was completely okay with this and very polite. As it is Saturday now, I drove all the way to Petaluma to get my crickets. When I asked for them and told the girl that she would need to bag 500 crickets because mine were turned loose yesterday, she literally made a face of disgust and yells over to whom I assume was the owner and asks him «um 500 crickets» as she makes this face like I just insulted her. Then the man says back «ugh let me go see.» As they both head to the crickets I follow them over there. At this point I was feeling very uncomfortable like I just caused them so much inconvenience and I wanted to run out of there. A few mins later the old man walks out and without looking at me he says while shaking his head is disgust «it’s gonna be awhile.» About 30 whole seconds later the gal walks out with the crickets and I say to her «are you guys upset with me? I am feeling really uncomfortable» in which at that point she literally turns her back to me and ignores me and walks to the front. At this point I’m done. She then says to me from the counter «well it’s just that it’s hard for us to count 500 crickets.» The entire time I am getting dirty looks from the old man and the old lady that work there as well. Which honestly had they explained that to me from the beginning I would of totally understood and taken whatever THEY were not inconvenienced with. I paid for my bugs and walked out. I will never return to this place. These people were so incredibly rude to me and treated me like I was the scumbag of the earth over 500 crickets. If I could give them zero stars I would because their customer service is horrible!!!

Hmm where do I start? I think its best that I just list how awesome Rivertown is:
1. Locally owned by great people who care about Petaluma
2. In store staff are excellent! Knowledgable and eager to help
3. Yard staff hard working, fast to assist you and just nice people
4. The quality of their feed supplies is also excellent
5. The variety of products for ALL and I mean ALL of our livestock and indoor pets is second to none, more stuff then anywhere I know
6. They have organic Vegetable Starts in the Spring and good prices on chickens as well.
Its just a great place for all your pet needs and farm needs, they carry high quality Alfalfa and Orchard Grass and belief me your livestock will notice! «especially goats cause they will YELL at you if its not good LOL

I love this feed store. Their hay is great quality and their prices are competitive. They have a good selection of supplies and a really beautifully kept store. The location is awesome and the staff is extremely helpful and they don’t mind keeping their doors open a little longer for clients in need. I trust my pets and horses health and nutrition in their hands.

I’m going to have to say that River Town has improved its customer service in leaps and bounds in the past few years. I once again enjoy my shopping experience there. Back in 2012, I would avoid the place like a rabid dog. The service was terrible and the employees, most of them, were just smug and condescending, making shopping there really miserable. I just want to thank the management for really rising to the occasion and hiring friendly and knowledge, not to mention, helpful staff. I also want to add the the prices are fair and I rarely come away without what it is I was looking for. Bravo!

Quick easy. came in within 5 minutes got 100lbs of chicken feed. Great service brought the feed straight to the car $ 12-​$ 18 dirt cheap for 50lbs

Older lady at the counter could be friendlier that’s for sure. It would make the experience much nicer when I go there.

Each time I go in I have a very different experience based on who helps me. I don’t like such an inconsistent experience. Thus far, Carlos who actually loads the grain has been the most helpful. And that’s sad, because the snarky older ladies at the counter are quite rude to him in front of customers. He knows more about the grain composition than they do, and they talk down to him like a child.
It seems like they do a good business because they are the only gig in town; but not because they do a good job. Is there another feed store around that’s not big corporate?
Their assortment of horse feed is very circa 1980’s; way too many molasses feeds. They are not willing to bring in any of the less sugary feeds even from the mills they already carry. Lame! I guess my 2 horse volume doesn’t interest them because it’s only about $ 100 a month.
I will say this; if you are new to horse supplementation and grain, do not listen to their recommendations. They are peddling based on what they have on– hand, not based on science or modern equine nutrition.
Maybe they are more knowledgable about chickens?

This is a great local business. Friendly and honest people.
We come for the backyard farmstead supplies — animal feed. The have everything you need to get started. The baby chicks and bunnies are always fun to play with.

Like other people my age, disillusioned with the conventional food system and naively nostalgic about «farm-​life» I decided to get chickens a few years ago. Soon after I made this decision I found my way through the doors of Rivertown. Who knew chickens had so many dietary choices! A helpful employee helped me understand these choices and another helpful person helped me load up my hatchback for the drive back to my suburban farm.
So the people are helpful and Rivertown sells good stuff for all kinds of animals but there is something else I like about this place. Right in the middle of downtown Petaluma, is a feed store that serves owners of yorkies, backyard chickens and dairy herds. It’s a relic of an earlier time and is still thriving. All of this is perfect for my nostalgia and my mission to usurp the grocery store.

By far the best place around. Great selection of pet foods and treats for our pups. We love shopping here, the staff is great and they even have a club card.
Its cheaper than Petsmart and PetCo too which is awesome for a local business.

I far prefer to support local business over Petco, but it’s getting harder and harder to come in to this place.
Two stars for the selection– they have everything you need for any kind of pet. I personally love the selection of dog food for my pup. But last time I purchased the food, there was a hole in the bottom of the bag that had been taped back shut — really? Why would you resell this bag of high end dog food?
Honestly though, the biggest reason for the loss of stars is the service. The customer service in here is terrible. Probably if you are some big animal owner and have to go in all the time they recognize you and say hi, but I have been buying pet food in here for over a year and I have yet to ONCE be greeted as I walk in. They fail to greet me even when there is literally no one else in the store and they are all talking to each other behind the counter. You have to walk right by the counter to get to some of the products, it would not be hard to say HELLO, let alone ask me if I need help.
Checking out is always messy and again, never any smiles. I have experienced this with all staff members. The store is huge, so if you are a first time visitor or don’t go in regularly, good luck finding anything you need. The staff sure won’t offer to help you with it.
Owners, take note. We all want to support you, but customers have some pretty basic expectations that are not being met here.
