Lily’s Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary

For 1 of my Unilocal Helps volunteering gigs this year, I signed up for the Group Volunteer @ Lily’s Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary through GoVoluntr. I figured it’d be a pleasant way to get in my hours for the Unilocal Helps Volunteer Appreciation Party.
Lily’s Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary is out in some scenic low rolling hills on the outskirts of Petaluma. On a beautiful day, it was definitely a nice way to log a few volunteer hours. & it was so much more.
I had no idea there was so much need for a facility of this kind. Very specifically, it is not uncommon at all for older dogs to find themselves without a home, for a number of reasons. Once in shelters, older dogs are not adopted much.
With many shelters running at full capacity & younger dogs being adopted most of the time, older dogs can often end up being euthanized. It’s pretty sad considering how much life & love these dogs still have.
Thanks to Lily’s Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary, I got to see how adorable a bunch of these older pooches are. They might be up there in the dog years, but they really are puppies at heart & some were quite the characters too.
As for the volunteer work itself, a group of us Unilocalers walked dogs around the property, learned how to teach basic commands, did some light yard work, & got a full tour of the facilities.
The staff, volunteers also, are all very dedicated to the care of these great dogs. Dogs who might otherwise slip through the cracks. I absolutely appreciate what they do to meet a need I was previously unaware of.
It was a beautiful day. It was a nice way to volunteer & participate in Unilocal Helps. It was cool to see so many of my fellow Unilocalers out doing good. & it was a heartwarming way to feel good about doing good.

Who would have thunk there’s a senior dog haven on the other side of Petaluma? Thanks to Unilocal Helps, a bunch of us Unilocalers from near & far gathered up in this gorgeous santuary to learn about caring for senior dogs. Many of us probably adopt puppies, yet we forget about senior dogs, and how much TLC they need/​require.
This nonprofit relies heavily on volunteers and donations to keep it going strong. I love hearing about their mission and stories, providing a safe and loving home for senior dogs over 50 lbs and 7+ years. Some of these dogs may have been abandoned or displaced from their homes, and Lily’s Legacy ensures they receive all the care they need ’til they pass on.
Alice Mayn is so passionate about these dogs and keeps the legacy going STRONG! It sure takes a whole lotta people to get involved and provide such care and attention to senior dogs, and they’re absolutely awwwwdorable!
Our docent Beth Brannock aka Lily’s angel volunteer took us around with Shiloh, and we learned so much. All the volunteers are extremely kind and passionate people devoting their time to this wonderful organization. Volunteers Nikki and Eric were a joy to talk to, and we couldn’t have asked for a more gorgeous day. I can’t wait to return and help out in some sort of way, especially to visit Pepper, Duke, Greta, Precious, and Shiloh of course :)

Lily’s Legacy Rocks!
I worked with the amazing crew of volunteers at Lily’s Legacy to plan a Unilocal Helps community event. I was initially attracted to Lily’s because I have a soft spot in my heart for elderly pups. Heck, I have a soft spot for pooches in general! I soon learned that Lily’s Legacy is a truly special organization.
I have been fortunate enough to work with a handful of non-​profits as the Volunteer Coordinator and President of the honors society at my college. The volunteers at Lily’s stand out from others that I’ve worked with because they truly love what they do. Did I mention that everyone who works for Lily’s Legacy is a volunteer? These guys are amazing!
If you are looking to adopt a pup, or lend a helping hand, look no further. Lily’s is always looking for volunteers to perform administrative duties, gardening work, dog walking, etc. The dogs need extra lovin’ and each day typically ends with a cuddle session. Can volunteering get much better than that? Nope, I don’t think so. I will be recommending them to anyone and everyone that is looking for a furry friend!

So I jumped into my Whip Black Beauty and Rolled to Petaluma .
I joined the Large Group of Unilocalers.
We Walked Dogs, Did a Little Light Training, Weeding and Took a Tour of The Sanctuary .
Lily’s Mission is to provide Senior Large Breed dogs, Seven Years or Older a Safe and Loving Home with Personal Attention, Healthy Food, Medical Care and Exercise
Lily’s treated all the Volunteers to Lunch and a Soda.
Lily’s is Hosting a Benefit Fundraising Screening of Sit –Stay– Ride — The Story Of Americas Sidecar Dogs .
All Proceeds Benefit Lily’s Legacy Senior Pups.
