Specialties

We’ve been making and serving our own ice cream for over 70 years and we’re also the home of the Doc’s Special. We also offer frozen yogurt and soft serve ice cream. We specialize in all things from small cones to big delicious sundaes and banana splits. We also have the thickest and tastiest frappes in the region. Ice cream is available in cups, plain cones, sugar cones, or in one of our freshly baked homemade waffle cones.

History

Established in 1939.

Doc’s was founded in 1939 by a local veterinarian named Doc Davis. In addition to being the local vet he also provided entertainment for Pepperell residents on Saturday evenings. He would show movies on the side of his house or invite local brass bands to come play to his guests. Doc started serving his ice cream to his guests and it was such a hit that he opened a small shop in front of his house and started selling his ice cream.

Though the stand has been expanded it still stands where Doc originally built it and all the ice cream is still made on site. Today the stand is owned and operated by Billy and Rose Graves and Rose’s brother Johnny Dee.

Rose grew up just down the road from Docs and scooped ice cream there through high school under owner Frank Attridge. Rose became an owner of Docs when she and her husband Billy Graves, along with her brother Johnny Dee, purchased the business over 30 years ago. She has been managing the business ever since.

Can never pass up an opportunity to get a Doc’s Special!!! Sizes have decreased over the years, but thank god for that! I do not need them to be the size they were when we were teenagers!!! Love Docs! A must stop when friends & family are home visiting!!!

I used to love Doc Davis but my last two trips were disappointing. The first was cookie dough with a lack of dough, tonight butter crunch with not a single crunch in sight. I’m very disappointed and won’t be rushing back.

Just went here for my first time tonight. I got a small one scoop and my boyfriend got a medium, 1 ½ scoop. The portion sizes were tiny and the ice cream was alright. We paid around $ 8 for Both, which is a bit pricey for the size of ice cream we got. Overall, I wasn’t impressed and I probably won’t be back. My advice? Lower the prices and enlarge the portions. There is a lot of competition in the area and I’d much rather drive another five minutes for a larger less expensive portion of ice cream. Also they had no frozen yogurt which was disappointing.

I grew up going to docs. so pleasant childhood memories aside. docs could use some improvements. Creativity is lacking when it comes to flavors, and portion size has gotten skimpy. For the price tag you can do better at Hayward’s in Nashua. I hope docs makes a comeback but for now I will pass.

Another reviewer mentioned Hayward’s and Kimball Farms and I would say the ice cream here is very similar. What they share for me is that they seem to taste good initially but I gradually lose interest and don’t finish my serving which is VERY rare for me!-) I am guessing the problem is an overabundance of thickeners, stabilizers, emulsifiers, etc. The ice cream does not taste very real. Best contrast in this area is Blake’s, which does taste like dairy, though the flavor selection is shorter and less interesting. And at Blake’s the flavorings are not of the same quality as the ice cream (so order vanilla or something close to vanilla).
So for myself I would rate this a 1 but I’ll give it a 3 to say it is a perfectly fine ice cream stand if you like that kind of ice cream, which I would describe as driven by the flavorings more than by the quality of the ice cream. For reference, I also like Haagen Das, Ben and Jerry’s, and Brigham’s, but not most supermarket brands.
The place is on the east side of the road and could be mistaken for a small house.

Pretty much the best thing in the history of the universe. Ok, that may be an exaggeration, but the peanut butter moose tracks is actually my favorite ice cream ever, from anywhere. And they make it there! The ambience isn’t fantastic, but that doesn’t bother me. And if you go when they’re making waffle cones, it smells really really really good.

This is a super little ice cream joint. A great find that we passed on the road. I had the soft serve twist (small) and it was a gigantic portion. My friends had hard serve and enjoyed it immensely. Giant umbrella outside was a plus. Good variety of flavors. A little pricey. ($ 3.25 for a small… but, the small was huge).

This is the hidden gem of the southern NH/​Northern Ma. area. Tucked away in a quieter part of Pepperell, but on a main road. We make the trip to Kimballs farmstand right up the road and then head here on alot of summer weekends from New Hampshire.
Make the trip, it’s worth it. Forget the long lines at Haywards of Nashua/​Kimballs of Westford, or the limited soft serve crap at King Kone, this is the best stand, hands down my favorite.

So, I had passed by this joint on occasion, and was rather intriqued by the name. Turns out Dr. Davis was a local vet who was fond of making ice cream using cream from his dairy cows. That hobby turned into a business, and 60 years later, there’s still a stand. They make all their own flavors, and homemade sugar cones, which has stolen Sweetie’s heart away.
They also make real Lime Rickeys, which stole my heart away.

We had ice cream there a few times this summer and it was great. Good flavors that are packed with flavor. This is what a small town ice cream stand is all about. People may complain that it is pricey. Trust me, you get what you pay for. Honestly, I didn’t think it was overpriced at all.

Went here for the first time a couple weeks ago. The ice cream was very good and wafflecone was amazing. I’ll definitely be back to try some more flavors. The only downside is that they are definitely more expensive than the other ice cream stands in the area.

This is a summer time favorite of ours. They have a good variety of flavors, as well as pints to go. Some of the flavors don’t have a ton of toppings in them, others are what you would expect. Prices are a little high, but I expect to pay a little more for homemade icecream.

Doc Davis’ Ice Cream is a place my family *wants* to love, but the ice cream is not very good.
consistency: Ice chunks are common — even in the middle of the summer, when you’d expect that the ice cream would be consumed before ice chunks could form.
flavor: It’s difficult to explain, but all of the flavors have a similar overwhelming flavor to them. It’s not soap or mint — but something similar. Something just isn’t quite right.
other: There is a dearth of candies and chunks in many of the flavors. Chocolate-​chip cookie dough is basically an odd-​tasting chocolate-​chip ice cream with approximately 1 to 2 pieces of cookie dough per serving.
atmosphere: It’s quiet, remote, and there are enough tables. The whole scene there is enough to make you wish the ice cream was actually good.
NOTE: Like many locals here in Pepperell, we have a policy of trying this place once per year in hopes that they’ve discovered how to make ice cream.

has really gone down hill over the past few years!!! Ice cream isn’t as good, some flavors haven’t been swapped so long theres ice chips in it and prices are wayyy too high. Its fricken ice cream, it shouldn’t cost the price of a meal! Check out the ice cream spot at charlottes (something like rail trail ice cream station) good selection and it hasn’t been sitting around since the beginning of the season!

A long standing joke in my family is that all roads lead to DOC Davis. This very popular ice cream stand is on the NH border a short drive from Nashua, NH. As a kid during the summer I remember many random visits; it seemed that on many hot and humid evenings the family car always ended up here whether it was after running errands or visiting family in other parts of Southern, NH. All of their ice cream is homemade on premises as far as I know. The place is usually packed but they use a number tag system like deli’s use in grocery stores. The stand is very adequately staffed with college students waiting to take your order so the wait is never very long regardless of the size of the crowd. One of my favorite flavors is rum raisin.
