For years this shelter house has been a special place for my family, I even had my wedding reception here in 2013. During this time, I realize the parks hands were tied– the government had shut down all the parks and I couldn’t get a hold of anyone to tell me if I was going to be able to have my reception or(if not) when I could be expecting a full refund. This on top of loosing my job, having my seamstress ruin my wedding dress, no one willing to catering my small reception, etc was just icing on the cake. To add to the incredibly frustrating experience of getting married– I had made arrangements with a woman named Margaret(she was incredibly friendly/helpful) to go the night before & set up for my reception… I was unable to do this due to the shut down. I was also told that I would be able to use the small service road on the side of the shelter house to unload supplies but was screamed at by a janitor that we couldn’t park there & so he made my family carry over twenty heavy tables back & forth from the parking lot to the shelter & screwed over the caterer in the process. One of the issues with renting from the park is that you are unable to see inside the shelter house prior to renting it because they say they don’t have the staff to give people tours. So, attempting to peek through the darkened windows probably isn’t the best way to promote the shelter– just say’in. There’s also no pictures of the inside or measurements on the site to help you. Luckily for me, out of the 20 plus trips I made to measure, etc the maintenance men were there one day & let me see inside once I explained my situation. If it wasn’t for their kindness, I never would have know how much room, and the setup I would have to arrange. The shelter house itself is beautiful!!! The inside has a nice long counter for a buffet style setup and two large fireplaces at either end. The shelter house was spotless as well as the attached bathrooms and the park itself has always been very well maintained. There are picnic tables outside; however, there were only 6 inside so you might want to plan ahead to bring additional tables. The cost of renting the shelter house was well below the average cost of renting a boring old hall or church, if I remember correctly it was under $ 200.00 to have it the entire day! If you can get your arrangements in writing(this was my mistake) it is well worth the investment if you plan on having a smaller gathering(it can only house up to 75 people).
